She is very funny and engages the audience fully. A small gathering of the jmdler kind saw her in south jersey last year. Shawn did an entire show based on requests from the audience..she was so cool about that. The outdoor venue was very small, and it was easy to walk up near the stage and see her a mere twenty feet or so away. I'm glad to hear she's working on a new album. Moogs ;-) Tired of spam? Yahoo! And, I believe the trend will continue and is part of the Tradition of the church... change. Christ was a changer. Take the way he treated women for instance. Even though we might have a way to go yet in that area, thanks to Jesus we have come far compared to those very early times. If the church/Popes didn't change with the time, then women wouldn't be able to speak in the assembly and would have to wear veils. But, we have women lectors now and women advisors to the Pope and women who distribute Communion, etc. Women's treatment is only one example. The change is slow and careful no doubt, but it is none the less very real. I look forward to the changes to come. I see Benedict XVI as a place holder, a continuum, until a younger and more innovative Pope will be elected. If a younger, more liberal Pope would have been elected now, it probably would have been a shock to many in the church. Traditional doesn't have to equal conservative. Jesus wasn't a conservative...the Pharisees were though. I see Jesus as a traditionalist while at the same time being very liberal... talking to the woman at the well, healing on the Sabbath, not washing before eating, etc. The church during Jesus' time had become starchy and oppressive. Jesus breathed new life and freedom into it... much like Pope John XXIII did with Vatican II. There can and will be the same kind of changes down the road. It's Tradition. It is not accurate, in the Church, to speak of upholding Tradition, but rather, to uphold a particular portion or selection of the Tradition in the reality of any given situation. There is tradition, for example, for women clergy and tradition for male only clergy, and for married clergy and for celibate clergy. Which tradition one appeals to is the question, not what Tradition says, because Tradition says many things. Tradition also evolves and is ever changing. The celibate clergy tradition is a late traditon, relatively speaking. The church calendar is Tradition, but gets changed regularly. A new piece of Tradition is an addition to liturgical colors, blue for Advent. And what is tradition for one part of the Church may not be for another. The Roman teaching on birth control is a very new teaching and has not been a part of Tradition. Tradition is very open on homosexuality, and there is tradition for gay marriage and gay saints (Sergius and Bacchus, if I remember the spelling without looking it up) for a great length of time in the Church's history. To say one is to proclaim Tradition is a very vague statement without further information on how one is going to handle and interpret and selct from Tradition. A Jewish parallel is - I believe it is called - the Mishnah, the commentary on Torah (and someone correct me if I have the wrong term). The great tsaddeks (spelling) and rabbis have commented on the Torah with different perspectives through the years. One can appeal to the teaching of one rebbe and another to another rebbe and both be faithful, just as Christians can appeal to one aspect of Tradition and another to another aspect, and both be faithful. Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, for example, also have various strands of differing traditions with the Tradition of their belief system. What is disturbing about the new pope is his long documented past in appealing to the most narrow of interpretations of Christian Tradition. It may surprise some but I am a most traditional Christian. I value highly tradition. Yet Tradition allows great diversity and does not limit, it only instructs and guides, unless one focuses it so narrowly as to exclude. And for the majority of the world's Christians, no one person is the Vicar of Christ and reject the arrogance of such a claim. That is the Orthodox tradition, as well as Coptic and Protestant traditions, two of which predate Rome's claim that the bishop of Rome is the Vicar of Christ and the third of which has claim back to the early Church as well. I am not going to dispute the issue further, just commenting that an appeal to that status is an appeal that carries no authority outside of Roman Catholicism. Non Roman Christians have an interest however in who is Pope because the Pope is the world's best known Christian, whoever the Pope may be, and what the Pope says and does in fact impacts on the rest of us, if only as to how the actions of the Pope affect perceptions of all of Christendom. The comment about condoms was a cheap shot by whoever Laura Ingram is. There were actions taken by Bendict immediately in the public world that do not auger well for conciliation and ecumenicity, such as the form of blessing that goes back to Piux X (who is a polarizing figure). It may not mean much to people outside the church. But the Church is replete with speaking through symbols and non verbal communications and in such liturgical ways Benedict did not reassure those who know him as the hard line enforcer who silenced rather than dialogued. In the early days, Joni kept getting dopey and inflamatory interview questions like, "Is rock & roll big enough for both Judy Collins *AND* you? Does Joan Baez deserve her success?" Joni was explaining herself from the beginning, except when she was talking to the rare music buff who "got it", like Gene Shay. 10 years later, she was asked if she was threatened by Madonna. Now, she's answering the same question (but she's not as diplomatically) vis Shawn, Alanis, and (especially) Jewel. Later this year, they'll ask, "Do you wish you could wear a ruby in your belly button... like Joss Stone?" On and on Sinerely, Jim L'Hommedieu Covington, KY Bob Sartorius said in part, >Joni understands Jerry's point on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level does not like others' (lesser) work being compared to hers in any way, while the others who were inspired by Joni do not want to have to feel compared (unfavorably) to her, Like I said, IMO its a bit of a Circle Game.> ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Apr 2005 19:26:38 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Here's a kick, 100% JC Go to http://www.jmdl.com/lyrics/lyricsearchresults.cfm and search for: "on and on" I got 152 hits, from an unreleased song "Blue On Blue" to one of the last songs she's released, "Love Puts On A New Face". There is hope. If the Church is interested in forcing a third schism in Christianity, with the more liberal European countries (most of them, that is) joining the liberal branches/elements of the Catholic Church in North and South America to separate out, that's fine with me. That'll leave the pope with, what, Italy (well, most of it), Ireland (ditto), maybe Poland and a few other poorer European countries, together with their various third world holdings. Ainsi soit-il. Just in case you don't know, Patty Griffin will be performing at the Calvin Theater in Northhampton MA on Wednesday, May 4th. Alas, I have another commitment, but I hope some of you Northeastern Jonilistas get to go. I discovered her thanks to you all, and I thank you for that....and you know there may be more (things to thank you for....and there are)! And of course, JT will be opening his summer tour at the Meadows in Hartford on June 17th....anyone going? My son Christopher took me to see him there two years ago, and teased me after he went to get us drinks that he saw the Joni Mitchell tour bus in the parking lot. He sure knows how to put a quarter in my JMOCD Wurlitzer! That got me gabbing to the nice lady and her daughter next to me how much I love Joni Mitchell. She asked what was my favorite Joni song, and of course I did not have a short answer...lol! Anyway, her favorite is Electricity. I had a hankering to listen to two old Ferron albums but can't find them on CD or electronically anywhere. The albums are 'Testimony' and my personal favorite, 'Shadows on a Dime.' It looks like they're out of print and unavailable except as old vinyl or tape copies. I think the label (Lucy Records) is out of business. Are they? I looked for copies on eBay and in on line used record stores, but came up empty handed. If you know where I can find a copy of either on CD or electronically, please reply to me off list. In fact, they are having a hell of a time selling tickets to this thing. I can't believe it, but I am wrestling about going to it, since Joni's "appearance" is questionable. First, the big news is that her nodules means she will never sing again, according to the paper, and then I've read they will do some tribute, and the centennial website said she's a cohost - but thye removed her from the host list this evening. check these links: http://www.canada.com/entertainment/story.html?id=11415f24-56bd-45fe-9247-a148a11bafbd and www.centennialgala.com Anyway, I am dying to go, but really don't like anyone else on the line-up, and what if Joni isn't even visable?? Nobody wants to go with me, I just bought Jann Arden tickets, and The Wiggles tickets for the kids, so I dunno - $250 for what may be a 2 minute Joni moment is a little much - but I also don't want to miss her at all, so I'll hsve to decide by morning what the hell I am doing... anyway, that's all I know for now, Rob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 01:13:15 -0500 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Russell Gray njc A friend just passed away, taken from this earth at 59.
