Hmmm.... The article about Joni is written by Jewel, in which she recounts Stevie Wonder introducing Joni and Jewel at a Vanity Fair photo shoot. Hasn't Joni said some completely unflattering things about Jewel? I seem to recall the word insipid being used. There is a biza\rre drawing of Joni included, with her looking every bit the injured, unhappy troubadour, and with what might be a raven (?) on her head. It might be a Black Crow. As always this list is very questionable. I like the Ramones but i certainly would not put them ahead of Joni on this list. In a rare spin, Patti Smith got rated higher than Joni. The little article about Patti is written by Shirley Manson. 60) Joni Mitchell By Jewel Joni Mitchell is a bigger icon than she is a star. Bob Dylan and Keith Richards became famous in such a worldwide way that they became stars and icons. But Joni is still quite unknown to a lot of people. The impact she had wasn't big and flashy. But she influenced people who became stars. I remember a friend in high school playing me "A Case of You," from Blue, and me liking it -- a lot. I could tell that Joni was a painter by the way she wrote lyrics. She describes smells and sounds to translate what is happening in her songs, using fewer words to transmit more feeling. Her melodies are all about shapes. The singing lines are slow, steep plateaus. One of the things that I learned from Joni, and that I love about her: If you can tell the story right and keep things moving, you don't need to return to the chorus on time. Joni never tries to make herself more perfect in her lyrics. What she writes is closer to journalism: On Blue, you hear everything she experienced, the highs and the lows. It's such a lonely album: not in the "I don't have any friends" sense but in the sense that you're a little bit removed, and always watching. And it takes a lot of courage to be that honest, especially as a woman - -- to talk about love and other intimate things so frankly. When she first did it, it was a very fluffy time -- pretty girls singing about pretty things. Joni had an edginess that not many women expressed then. Most women singers had strong vibratos and a lot of mascara. Joni Mitchell never made a big deal out of being a woman. She had such a strong sexuality, but she didn't feel the need to deny that part of her in order to be taken seriously. She also didn't play it up - -- although many of her songs are about sex. I met her only once, at a Vanity Fair photo shoot. It sounds like a pathetically feeble Hollywood story, but Stevie Wonder introduced us. He took my hand -- I guess I led him to her -- and he said, "Joni, I'd like you to meet Jewel." I just shook her hand and tried to swallow. I didn't have anything to say to her. Her influence on me is so obvious. I hope she can hear it. Below are details of an amazing act of generosity and musicality... to raise money for Rachel's children's college fund - I know most of the parties involved and can definitely vouch for the authenticity... My next post will be marked NJC, detailing my personal connection to Rachel - however, you didn't have to know her to love her... and I hope this inspires some of you to pre-order the tribute CD... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Folks, I am proud of the folk community, fans and performers and associated businesses alike. The way it has responded to the final wish of Rachel Bissex is nothing short of marvelous. Now I would like each of you to go to www.rachelbissex.org and pre-order a Tribute Album. The official release date is July 21. Let me give you some background. Rachel Bissex left us on February 20, 2005, a victim of breast cancer. Her friends from all over the US were devastated that this loving and so lovable artist could be taken so quickly after giving herself the maximum chance to survive. Shortly before she died I asked her what I could do for her. The one thing she was concerned about was getting her children, Emma and Matt, through college. I said that I would do everything in my power to enable them to graduate. Hundreds of contributions came in after her passing, an amazing display of affection but not large enough for one child much less two. Many performers and Micah Solomon of Oasis asked what they could do to fulfill Rachel's wish. I formed a steering committee to bring about a Tribute album to perpetuate Rachel's music and cover the kids Tom Prasada Rao is serving unpaid as producer. The many performers are recording Rachel's songs at their personal expense----Dar Williams, Catie Curtis, Ruthie Foster, Tracy Grammer, Jennifer Kimball, Greg Greenway. The Kennedys, and Tret Fure among others. Even more remarkable, Oasis is donating the manufacturing, Airshow the mastering, CD Baby isn't taking any cut on distribution, Hostbaby no cut on hosting, and Ellen Bukstel's Design Workshop Group, Inc. the designing. Moreover SONiA (from disappear fear) created an original painting to which Ellen Bukstel married Rachel's lyrics to form a commemorative poster. The first 100 pre-release on-line sales will receive one of these posters. By buying this CD you are helping to make a dream come true. When the initial run of 2000 are sold, our pledge to Rachel will be honored. For $15 you get a classy CD and assure Rachel's kids the college education Rachel wanted for them. That is Win-Win bigtime. Now please go to www.rachelbissex.org and pre-order a copy of Remembering Rachel--The Songs of Rachel Bissex. I first met Rachel in 1998 when I accompanied Brian Wolfsohn to Power Studios in Miami for an in-the-round with Marie Nofsinger, Big Blue Sky and Ms. Bissex - Brian is a long-time friend of Rachel's and introduced me to her before the show. I was very new to our folk scene and still in amazement that many of the performers were so accessible and kind - Rachel and I had a lovely chat and, when she found out I was a major Dar Williams fan, told me Dar did harmony vocals on Rachel's just-released I Used to Be Nice CD and that the song, Royal Blues, contained many Dar references. Of course I asked if I could buy it - she sold me the last copy... until she could get home to Vermont to replenish her supply! I went to my first Folk Alliance (an international music conference) in Albuquerque February 1999 and Rachel hosted the wonderful Emerging Artists showcase - rather than solo artists taking turns, the room was composed of a core group of performers, backing each other up on harmonies and instrumentation as individual songs were spotlighted. The phrase that most comes up when talking about Rachel is "generosity of spirit" and this format was so typical of her - - she always stressed collaboration and cooperation. Our paths crossed many times in the years following - in fact, it was on a recommendation of Rachel's that I switched my wine of choice... and whenever she knew I was in the audience, she changed her song lyric to "got a little Pinot Grigio for a woman with the blues?" and looked knowingly in my direction... :-) Rachel's version of Dar's I Love I Love reduced me to tears on more than one occasion and we shared a love for Joni as well - in addition to her impeccable taste in cover songs, Rachel's original compositions were political and passionate and pure, singing of body image and love (connected or lost) and those in our community who lift us up by their very presence. Rachel Bissex was one of those people - when she wrote Just Like That (about Vic and Reba Heyman, among others), she could just as well have been singing about herself. Dancing with My Mother speaks of the "joy and the desperation in music" - Rachel reflected the dichotomy... Rachel took the Folk Train from Montreal to the Vancouver Folk Alliance in February 2001 - there's a great recounting in story and photos, much in her own words at http://www.gotfolk.com/artists/victorheyman/folktrain2001.htm "for you have got the power in your trembling hands... 'cause you have got the power in your sweet and gentle voice" Rachel's song In the Middle was included on Volume II of the compilation Before Their Time, "a musical resource to promote healing, and it contains far more than entertainment. Dedicated to the memory of people who died young - from accidents, illness and disease, suicide, murder, SIDS or stillbirth, war, terrorism and other causes - it is intended to help survivors recover from the emotional trauma and extended grief that follows a premature death." http://www.beforetheirtime.org/contents.html Rachel was a headliner at our South Florida Folk Festival in 1996 and again in January 2004 - she was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2003, battled tirelessly and seemingly conquered... until this recent reoccurrence. Her latest CD, In White Light, chronicles much of this journey - to quote Rachel: "even though [the songs] were written before all my troubles, they deal mostly with the themes of hope, strength, kindness, and living in the moment. Appropriate". Many are aware of the lovely video of Rachel's song Here Now, made and performed at NERFA (Northeast Regional Folk Alliance) by a large group of friends - you can see the video at www.ericschwartz.com/herenow.html and go to www.rachelbissex.com for more info on Rachel's recordings and life history... I'm writing this before I leave Wednesday for the Folk Alliance in Montreal - two events had already been planned and will be even more poignant now under the circumstances... ~ On Thursday afternoon, we are encouraged to "come share a song for Rachel or a few words, or quietly listen. We'll have a guest book to sign for Rachel and her family. Bring a song, poem, a moment of silence, or just your signature". ~ Saturday night, "during Rachel's Performance Alley spot several of her close friends have stepped up to the plate to bring her music to Folk Alliance this year. Diane Zeigler, Lucie Blue Tremblay, Eric Schwartz, Stephanie Corby and Tom Prasada-Rao will each present one of Rachel's songs. Join these and all of Rachel's friends to celebrate her music during that time. " Rachel Bissex had a huge impact, both personally and professionally, on our South Florida, as well as the national, folk community - my tale of blessings is but one of countless others... "there's a moral to this story, it's obvious it seems you can be a queen, you can outlive all your dreams but don't forget to leave a little something behind you when you go especially if you plan to walk off naked in the snow do not be afraid do not be afraid..." Here's the article White House Letter: President Bush's iPod * By ELISABETH BUMILLER * Published: April 11, 2005 [image: W]ASHINGTON Between his return on Friday from Pope John Paul II's funeral in Rome and his meeting today with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel, President Bush spent an hour and a half on Saturday on an 18-mile mountain bike ride at his Texas ranch. With him, as usual, was his indispensable new exercise toy: an iPod music player loaded with country and popular rock tunes aimed at getting the presidential heart rate up to a chest-pounding 170 beats per minute. Which brings up the inevitable question. What, exactly, is on the First iPod? In an era of celebrity playlists - Tom Brady, the New England Patriots quarterback, recently posted his on the iTunes online music store - what does the presidential selection of downloaded songs tell us about Mr. Bush? First, Mr. Bush's iPod is heavy on traditional country singers like George Jones, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. He has selections by Van Morrison, whose "Brown Eyed Girl" is a Bush favorite, and by John Fogerty, most predictably "Centerfield," which was played at Texas Rangers games when Mr. Bush was an owner and is still played at ballparks all over America. ("Oh, put me in coach, I'm ready to play today.") The president also has an eclectic mix of songs downloaded into his iPod from Mark McKinnon, a biking buddy and his chief media strategist during the 2004 campaign. Among them are "Circle Back" by John Hiatt, "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" by Joni Mitchell and "My Sharona," the 1979 song by the Knack that Joe Levy, a deputy managing editor at Rolling Stone in charge of music coverage, cheerfully branded "suggestive if not outright filthy" in an interview last week. Mr. Bush has had his Apple iPod since July, when he received it from his twin daughters as a birthday gift. He has some 250 songs on it, a paltry number compared to the 10,000 selections it can hold. Mr. Bush, as leader of the free world, does not take the time to download the music himself; that task falls to his personal aide, Blake Gottesman, who buys individual songs and albums, including Mr. Jones's and Mr. Jackson's greatest hits, from the iTunes music store. Mr. Bush uses his iPod chiefly during bike workouts to help him pump up his heartbeat, which he monitors with a wrist strap. The strap also keeps track of calories expended for the intensely weight-focused president, who has recently lost eight pounds after eating a lot of doughnuts during the 2004 campaign. Mr. Bush burned 1,300 calories on his bike ride on Saturday, Mr. McKinnon reported. As for an analysis of Mr. Bush's playlist, Mr. Levy of Rolling Stone started out with this: "One thing that's interesting is that the president likes artists who don't like him." Mr. Levy was referring to Mr. Fogerty, who was part of the anti-Bush "Vote for Change" concert tour across the United States last fall. Mr. McKinnon, who once wrote songs for Kris Kristofferson's music publishing company, responded in an e-mail message that "if any president limited his music selection to pro-establishment musicians, it would be a pretty slim collection." Nonetheless, Mr. McKinnon said that Mr. Bush had not gone so far as to include on his playlist "Fortunate Son," the angry anti-Vietnam war song about who has to go to war that Mr. Fogerty sang when he was with Creedence Clearwater Revival. ("I ain't no senator's son ... Some folks are born silver spoon in hand.") As the son of a two-term congressman and a United States Senate candidate, Mr. Bush won a coveted spot with the Texas Air National Guard to avoid combat in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Mr. Levy sized up the rest of the playlist of the 58-year-old president. "What we're talking about is a lot of great artists from the 60's and 70's and more modern artists who sound like great artists from the 60's and 70's," he said. "This is basically boomer rock 'n' roll and more recent music out of Nashville made for boomers. It's safe, it's reliable, it's loving. What I mean to say is, it's feel-good music. The Sex Pistols it's not." Mr. Jones, Mr. Levy said, was nonetheless an interesting choice. "George Jones is the greatest living singer in country music and a recovering alcoholic who often sings about heartbreak and drinking," he said. "It tells you that the president knows a thing or two about country music and is serious about his love of country music." The songs by Mr. Jackson indicate that the president "has a little bit of a taste for hard core and honky-tonk," Mr. Levy said, adding that both Mr. Jackson and Mr. Jones "are not about cute and pop, and they're not getting by on their looks." And while Mr. Chesney "is about cute and pop and gets by on his looks," Mr. Levy said, "he's also all about serious country music." Mr. McKinnon, who has downloaded "Castanets" by Alejandro Escovedo and "Alive 'N' Kickin' " by Kenny Loggins into Mr. Bush's iPod, said that sometimes a presidential playlist is just a playlist, nothing more. "No one should psychoanalyze the song selection," Mr. McKinnon said. "It's music to get over the next hill." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Apr 2005 12:26:18 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Joni song on the "First iPod" Richard Goldman wrote: > Today, April 11, 2005, NY Times . . . . down> . . . Joni Mitchell *Songbook* Complete - Volume 1, actually. It's a treat for me, although the arrangements are somewhat rudimentary and all in standard tunings, if it's the guitar parts you're after. Contains sheet music for StaS, Clouds and LotC and a few pages of Joni art reproduction. And it's SIQUOMB published too, which I find cool for some reason. If the bidding gets out of hand, you can buy it now at Abebooks online for $30 plus shipping, which probably runs about 4-5 bucks: http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetailsbi=452415754&AID=10363901&PID=749836&cm_ven=CJ&cm_pla=749836&cm_cat=719199 Buenos suerte! - -Julius - -----Original Message----- From: Mark or Travis To: JMDL Sent: Mon, 11 Apr 2005 13:45:50 -0700 Subject: Joni Mitchell Complete - Volume 1 I have been bidding on this item on Ebay. As Julius states, it is in standard tunings, but hell, I can't play anything anyway. I just wanted the songbook back then. If it is out of print, go ahead and snag it or do what Julius suggests.
