The 1969 Worcester Poly show, as I best recall, sounds OK & I've always traded that one without warning. My friend, Mary Bentley was fortunate enough to do an interview with Don Alias for this month's issue of Smoothviews.com. I am so excited for her because she seems to be finding her niche as a writer. (You know how I love people to follow their hearts!) Anyway, the article is an excellent one and Don is a favorite artist of hers so she really enjoyed interviewing him! I wanted to share her article with you because I am so very proud of her!!!! I was rooting for them because Mr. and Ms. SCJoniguy are fans -- and you must be, too, Joseph, because you mentioned the building excitement yesterday. And Jenny Goodspeed, I know you love Roy Williams and picked UNC to win, too. So congratulations to all you dear hearts! My alma mater UConn won it all last year (as a matter of fact, we won both mens AND womens titles, a feat never achieved before in NCAA history -- braggart, moi!), and I can't think of nicer fans to turn the torch over to. Enjoy the euphoria we felt here last year at UConn. It's way fun! And to add a teeny Joni content, I was so wrapped up in the double euphoria here last year that I dreamt that Joni came to our campus, and I was torn between going to the parade and watching her perform. She was standing on on a noisy corner waiting for the walking green by our Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts and I ended up taking her impossibly gentle hands and blood-red fingernails and bringing her to the parade. All the fans were screaming for the Huskies, and I was yelling: "But look, everybody! LOOK! It's JONI MITCHELL!!!! (I know, I know, I'm a Joni nutcase! But you take me as I am, right?) It would be an excellent show if the reverb could be removed. Includes an early version of River. Is there a better copy out there? The Mariposa show sounds like it was recorded on a portable cassette and handheld mic - very uneven, though valuable as a historical document. No fun to listen to. They're both worth having, but probably for hard-core Joni fans only. Dave Stewart apparently misidentifies Joni as Jodi. Some media corrected the error, others ran as is. BTW, anybody know when/on what recording Jodi (...I mean Joni) played the piano? LONDON (AP) b Dave Stewart's piano, played by musicians including Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney, sold for $6,740 in an auction. The piano belonging to Stewart, who co-founded the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox, was featured on hundreds of pop records over the past two decades. A note signed by Stewart and auctioned with the piano said: "I have watched the Bechstein piano being played by so many legends, from Bob Dylan, Jodi (sic) Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Brian Ferry and of course Annie, who played it all the time. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2005 15:47:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni, Dulcimers, Joellen and a cover Hey, I thought this was pretty cool and hope that y'all will too. About a month ago, I bought the debut CD of Joellen Lapidus (the luthier who made Joni's dulcimers), whose name will ring a bell with some of you that are familiar with her inclusion on JM.com, Wally Breese interviewed her back in 1997 and you can read more about the Joellen-Joni connection here: http://www.jonimitchell.com/Lapidus97.html (it's a long but very informative piece) Anyway, on her CD just issued (the one I bought back in paragraph one) she does a cover of Carey with a brief intro that includes a Joni mention. I bought the cd from cdbaby, and Joellen emailed me to say thanks and ask if I wanted to be put on her mailing list. When I explained my curious hobby, she pointed me to her website and offered up this comment as a guide to the photos: http://www.lapidusmusic.com/photos.html "The Jester (on the cover of my CD album), the Wild Columbine and the Princess were all made for her. She composed the three dulcimer songs on Blue on the Wild Columbine which she took to Europe with her after she bought it in 1968-9." And I thought I would pass it along to my Joni family. Joellen's website features a nice photo of Joni playing the Princess. Bob NP: Stan Ridgway, "Lonely Town" Yahoo! Mail - 250MB free storage. Do more. At JoniFest back in ought-three I went to bed at midnight the first night... To sleep! "49 reasons / all in a line / all of them good ones / all of them lies." I went to see Ratdog (Bob Weir's band) in Indianapolis last night. My boss, co-worker and I left directly from work; we didn't have time to eat. The venue was basically a tavern and they were already out of pizza when we arrived. The band started late and played late. We left the venue at about 1am and got home around 3:30am. Back to work at 9am. That kind of thing was fun when I was 20. Or 30. Or 42. But at 49, I "needs me my" sleep. Anyway, the central 1/3 of The Vogue Theatre's main floor is an enclosed, unused rectangle behind the bar- a huge waste of space exactly where the best listening spots are. You know the sound is bad when even the background music (before hand) is a steady, bass-ridden roar. The electric bass, keyboards, and kick drum were completely unintellegible the entire night. I walked around almost the whole place and it was a muddy mess everywhere. I recognized "Walkin' Blues" by the staccato pattern of syllables. After an hour of Ratdog, I left to find some dinner. On the way, I realized the tinnitus in my left ear was already acting up. (My ears were ringing). I always have ear plugs in the camera bag but I didn't take the cameras this time. After dinner, I walked for more than 90 minutes, trying to save my ears and avoid strangers brushing past, stepping on my feet, and blowing tobacco smoke. My co-worker tried to stick a label from his beer bottle on my shirt sleeve. Twice. Like I said, I'm too old to rock. The sound in my fricken car is far better even though it's mono! The air is cleaner too. My review: Ratdog can rock. They can do extended jams (obviously). They get extra points for doing "The Weight" and "It's All Over Now (Baby Blue)". They did a raggae jam better than any other collection of white Americans I've heard. Heck I don't even mind that Weir sings like he's driving nails with a claw hammer: "Bam... bam... bam bam BAM! " I'd go see 'em outdoors *IF* I had somewhere to sit.. For 3 hours. Far from the beer line. And the bathroom line. And if I was fed. And if remembered my earplugs. And... With one ear STILL ringing, and not amused at all, Jim L'Hommedieu ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2005 #151 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
