    LOLL aren't we two funny trying to second guess  Joni!!   Yes, I know it 
is just your take and my take and the way we  would do things differently.  I 
for sure wouldn't leave an anonymous note  for her because I wouldn't be that 
sure she might not think she was being  stalked by somebody who wanted to 
remain hidden and give the note to the  FBI.  I don't need any trouble with the 
law.  
 
    No notes from me... except maybe a banner at a  concert if I could get a 
certain list artist to help me make one.  I  wouldn't rush her or anything at 
the grill because I'm very shy.  I  would just ask her for her autograph if it 
was really her... and go from  there.  If she was open to conversation or 
wanted to talk to me, that would  be cool.  But, maybe I'm just an impossible 
dreamer.  Nice to  dream anyway.  I can see you like to dream too.

For those of you who missed the Joni Mitchell tribute at the Center for the
Arts recently, wow, did you miss a great show. Ten fantastic singers and a
dozen musicians entertained over 750 people, with a Saturday night show being a
standing-room only, standing-ovation, sellout crowd.

And, that is the reason I am writing. I want to thank the Center for the Arts
and the staff thereof: Paul Emery, Marcie Wolfe, Alan Goodman, John Bush, John
Blinder, Peter Wilson, Chris Hawthorne and Myra Traugot for all their hard work
and dedication, for everything they do to support the Center and the myriad
fine performers and shows that grace their stages and studios. Not to mention
the fantastic opportunities they offer young dancers, actors and musicians and
other aspiring and accomplished artists. 

The Center has worked diligently and sacrificed a great deal just to stay open
these past four years, and the battle isn't over, as they work every month to
make the rent. I sincerely hope all of you reading this will think about the
unbelievable opportunity your children and friends have in being able to
utilize such a tremendous resource as the Center for the Arts. Please support
them. Please visit them. Please get on the mailing list. Become a member if you
like. But, give only a few moments of thought to how much all of Nevada County
would lose if the Center's lights went dark.

You have two jewels in your possession: One, the incredible array of talented
artists residing in the area. And, two, the Center for the Arts, without which
our community would sparkle so much less. In folklore, it is said pirates wear
a jewel upon themselves so that if they fell overboard, someone on the ship
would bother to save them. If the Center for the Arts is the jewel I believe it
is, we ALL need to bother to appreciate it, lest it fall by the wayside. I know
you won't let that happen. So, thank you to everyone who came to the shows this
weekend, and let's keep up that tradition. Please support the Center for the
Arts. It may be your children one day gracing their stages.

Apologies if this is already mentioned.
 
I watched Tarnation the other day and part of the allure of this quasi-documentary-bricolage is the reference to Joni. The film's images were culled from home movies, horror films and several ads to tell the troubled past of filmmaker Jonathan Caouette and his schizophrenic mother Renee. At one point in the movie Caouette, using dramatic intertitles, mentioned a few names he felt can best play him and his mother if a film is done about them. He thought Joni Mitchell should play his mother, who as a young woman was very very attractive and who reminded me of Sharon Tate and Maria Renee Falconetti in 1928 more than Joni. 
 
As a student studying films I often wondered what roles will appeal Joni to play. Maybe the Deborah Kara Unger role in Cronenberg's Crash or the Miranda Richardson's dual characters in Cronenberg's Spider. Come to think of it, Unger and Joni resemble each other too much and . . . are they one person? ;-)
 
I recommend Tarnation even if I found it a bit unsettling and quite disturbing in some ways when the filmmaker opt not to tell the story but let the images speak of 'the horror the horror'. This film is right up there with two other films I watched this year that challenged conventions and film language: Sembene's Moolaade and Godard's Notre Musique.

I saw Vera Drake last week and enjoyed it very much. All the actors were
wonderful, including your friend Alex (I wonder what she looks like when she's
not playing such a character. Her posture and demeanour were very 'repressed'
in this film, and reminded me of a tortoise reluctant to stick its head out
from its shell). It was very nice to hear the London accent, to see the
clothes and the houses of the period. It was not an easy film to watch,
especially as I was sitting next to a woman who must have been about 8 months
pregnant. Congratulate Alex for me too. See you in JoniFrance.

I too watched Vera Drake and quite frankly I thought Imelda Staunton deserved the Oscar more than Catalina Sandino Moreno and Kate Winslet (although the Award had to go to Hilary Swank whose performance was also good and true but lacking in gravitas but that's just me). I must have watched all Mike Leigh films and although my favorites are Secrets & Lies and Life Is Sweet, I find Vera Drake gripping in a Deleuzean way and wisely avoided the tendency to preach especially on a topic as potentially divisive as this. I especially liked Phil Davis as Vera's baffled but ultimately understanding husband. I watched him in Photographing Fairies and remembered him more than the lead actor or the film.
 
Speaking of films, I watched Godard's Notre Musique and there is this one cinematic moment when Godard himself was asked about the future of digital media and he did not respond for about 15 seconds and we never got to know what he meant, but the theme of polarities in the said film is quite powerfully moving in a way I have not seen before.

I would avoid the Tate Gallery in St Ives, and the village in general, unless
you are extremely interested in Barbara Hepworth. The Tate Modern is more
interesting, but I'd go to the NPG myself; I always find it interesting, and
free as far as I remember. Tintagel may be less crowded in May than in August
but still prepare yourself for the tourists ('Grockels' to the locals, I
think). Last time I was in Kew Gardens was 1986 immediately post-hurricane so
it was (as we say in Bangor) in a f*ck of a state then. Maybe it's recovered
by now.
There's an American Express office in Southampton Row, near Russell Square so
in the Bloomsbury zone. Change money here or practically anywhere if using
AE.
In Cornwall, prepare to be in traffic jams and for driving on winding country
roads. You could try walking the Coastal Path, and the part near Boscastle is
very nice. In Cornwall you must try the Cornish pasty/pastie, this is
difficult to avoid, esp in Tintagel. Beware also of Excalibur-wielding brats.
There is a mine museum near St Just (Levant Beam Engine and Geevor Tin Mine)
which is amazing. I recommend joining the National Trust if you are planning
to see more than just one or two of their places (and there are a lot in
Cornwall). I think they charge around 30 pounds for a year's membership but
with three visits you're in the money.
You may be tempted to visit Jamaica Inn (are you a du Maurier fan?) but it's
just kitsch. Frenchman's Creek is more interesting. Helston is cool, and there
are some nice restaurants, there, one is called 'Juniper', if I recall
correctly. Bodmin Moor is not that interesting, although Buffalo Bill and his
Indians once performed there while on a European tour. No more for the moment,
sorry I don't have Hayley Mills' mobile number or current address. Enjoy the
trip.

Winnipeg hosted the Juno awards last night, if you are not sure what they are, it is equivalent to the Grammys in the US. There is an incredible wealth up talent up here, so nice to see the Tragically Hip win kudos for their amazing career.
 
Neil Young was supposed to be there...however, last week, he was complaining of blurred vision and after various tests, it was discovered that he had an aneurism in his brain. Surgery was successful. Consequently, he was unable to attend the Junos last night. :-(
 
However, kdlang was there, and she did our nation proud by singing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah; an incredible performance....she was on the inside of that song...so very difficult to express how amazingly beautiful . The fans went wild!  And dear kd, she was clearly moved to tears. Next, she performed Helpless for Neil, with a message for Neil (that's the song he was supposed to perform). She talked a little bit about Neil, relaying that he never lost his integrity throughout his career. and sent greetings for his well being..nary a dry eye in the house I'm sure. 
 
I'm wondering if anyone taped it..if so, would you please contact me off list, I'd dearly love a copy.

exchange for the free cake slice, customers are encouraged to make
donations to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  One slice per customer.

I am so happy that the operation was successful.  Neil is one of my true
music heroes--equal to Joni in my pantheon of greats.


Now for a completely non-Neil Joni query.  Does anyone here know the quality
of the "unofficial" recordings of the 1969 Worcester Polytechnic show or the
1970 Mariposa Folk Festival Show?  I'm considering getting them in trade for
my collection and putting them on the JMDL hub, but I seem to recall hearing
some time back that they were pretty low-quality soundwise.
