PS - Speaking of cowboys, I pasted a short story below with a picture attached for your reading/viewing pleasure this morning, enjoy! Love ya, *--------------------------- The Texans vs. The Turks By Donna Binkley Djb@binkleybarfield.com February, 2005 It's Rodeo Time in Texas. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is one of the largest rodeos held in the United States or in the. world. I'm not much of a fan country music or of rodeo, it has become too crowded anymore for my taste so I don't attend. However, I have attended a few times in my life. When I was around 6 years of age, Michael Landon rode around the dirt arena of the Astrodome on a horse shaking all the kids' hands, he shook my hand and I thought that was great. This would have been circa 1967 when the TV show Bonanza was very popular, remember Hoss and Little Joe? I wore my new, red cowgirl outfit with white fringe and felt very important that day. To this day, the Texas Trail-Riders ride their horses, in respective groups, complete with covered wagons and old fashioned buggies, from different points in Texas to Houston. Beginning a week before the rodeo, some groups ride from 3-5 days depending on what town they are coming from and it always, ALWAYS rains during this time of year in our area of the country. It must be difficult and uncomfortable for them, but perhaps some of us do what we love no matter what. A pretty good philosophy, really. These people all own horses, live in the country and on ranches etc. and participate in smaller rodeos as a part of their lives from a young age. On these trail-rides, they begin their ride at daybreak with a hearty cowboy/girl breakfast, stop only for lunch and ride through each day not stopping again until nightfall when their group camps for the night. They usually camp at state parks or camping areas that would allow animals, they and the horses are welcome during this time because everyone knows that they are part of the rodeo. One might wonder what they do between those long daylight hours to relieve nature's call. When they finally reach Houston (the fourth largest city in the nation) the horses, old- fashioned buggies and covered wagons cause quite a stir in the city, as you may imagine. They come in on the least crowded streets possible, but still there is automobile traffic at every turn. For this reason, people are encouraged to refrain from honking their car horns in order to keep from scaring the horses - yeah right! Farm animals are not allowed to be kept inside the city limits at residences, so when we see a caravan of horses coming down the street, that's very exciting! One never sees a horse in the city - so it's almost like "what's wrong with this picture?" Nevertheless they have to come through the busy streets to get to Memorial Park, their final camping destination before they trailer their horses for the beginning of the rodeo the next day. No matter how far they ride, they all arrive at the same place on the same day - we call it "Go Texan Day." I always wanted to participate in a rodeo Trail Ride, but you have to own a horse for that, and being a life long city dweller that is just not possible for me. One day a couple of years ago, I was sitting at a traffic light near my office on Go Texan Day when a band of Trail Riders came riding right down the street in front of me. Traffic was stopped and everyone was happy to see them and cheer them on, including me. As they passed, I noticed that this particular group had one horse-drawn flatbed trailer with two "porto-potties" on it. I thought that was a bit odd, but hey, they are riding horses for hundreds of miles, so although I'd never seen that before didn't think much of it. As I sat there watching, one woman rode her horse up beside another horse-riding woman, gave her the reins, hopped off of her horse and trotted to the "potty trailer." She jumped onto the trailer and went inside. It was amazing; no one in the horse-drawn trail riders group stopped or even slowed their pace. The horses, the riders and the covered wagons clip-clopped along and no one blinked an eye or even missed a beat. I suspect that some of the "covered wagons" that are shown on our TV news casts during this time house some sort of a camper's potty. But these riders had the balls to carry modem toilets with them as part of their caravan. It almost rivals the "Turkish Toilets" that our editor told us he had experienced in Italy - a hole in the ground that you have to squat over - at least the Turks had actual walls around their toilets and didn't have to run along beside a moving caravan to access them. And that, my friends, is how a Texas Trail-Rider uses the facility when they are on the trail ride to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo! Kind of lends another look at a few things doesn't it? >>> "Steven Polifka" 3/16/2005 9:04:06 AM >>> Donna Binkley wrote: I must have missed it too Lori, apparently somebody was gettin some, but it wasn't me! db (still not gettin any) Donna, honey... Exponential population growth isn't theoretical. It's real. It's the 900 lb gorilla in the living room no one wants to talk about. I am so reluctant to even answer this post, because I said everything I wanted to say on the subject, and I'm certain that the rest of the listers are totally sick of it, too....but I was the one to first remark "Congratulations and all that..but...he's going to be like 80 when the kid graduates high school", which started this thread. I still stand by that as an OBSERVATION. As far as judging Stills, I agree, that is no one's place, and hey, Stephen Stills is not here reading this, I wouldn't dream of confronting anyone and saying they shouldn't have a baby. However, as Mark said, I'm entitled to my opinion about the wisdom of senior citizens having kids. I think it's fighting nature, and you are guaranteeing that child a parental death early in life. Don't tell me 'anyone can die at any time, no matter how young.' That's beside the point. Death of old age is guaranteed. For former alcoholic/heavy coke user rock stars (fact, not judgement), chances of making 80 are slim. Thing is, this discussion was only obstensibly about Stills, in the beginning, and turned into a discussion about how people feel about having children late in life, and (for me) a springboard for talking about overpopulation. We were actually having a mature discussion, with well thought out arguments from both sides. It's too bad you didn't enter it on that level-as you have now. You swooped in, told us you were disgusted with the whole thing, and told us the whole thing was some sordid tabloid trash moral lynching. And why does gay/straight keep coming into it? It has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic. I was practically accused of wanting anti-gay legislation because I am against people having large numbers of offspring. Absurd. You said "Pregnancy (other than I have never been there land) is not a choice." Maybe this is true when you are 15. When you are 60, let's hope it's a choice. As a matter of fact, birth control has been around for quite some time, and there are advances in the technology all the time. True. It's too bad the right wingers want to suppress access to information that would help people, especially young people, make responsible decisions. The don't ask, don't tell/abstinance approach is only causing more misery. I have a 6 yr old grandson that I adore. My own fatherhood at the age of 21 was not planned, and the idea of an abortion never entered my mind. Having a kid probably saved my life. On the other hand, I'm really glad to get the house back! Stephen Stills was 60 in January. He has 6 kids. He's fucking nuts- and that's just my opinion. As you said, Bless him, and his house, and I really mean that. Joni's photo is WONDERFUL!!! She uses her sword as if it were a guitar! Damn she's beautiful at 60. It has a little bio of Joni and her quote about "What do you hate most about midlife but can laugh about anyway" Joni says: "There is really nothing I hate about things now compared to the things I hated in my twenties.
