I guess you could say I'm a fan. She's got two collections out which are being distributed all over the USA which shold gain her more listeners in coffeeshops, she had two more collections out last year and this year there is yet ANOTHER one... Does she not think, '"Hey, the first group of songs only sold so much and they were the 'popular' ones, the second group of songs sold even less... Perhaps I shouldn't do another collection as they will only be obscure songs from albums that didn't do so well commercially." and yet were just about to get another collection. I know I will get it for the paintings but what is the thinking. Are there enough of us on the list to keep the sales of these going? Has she re-sold enough of the later, more expensive work, to pay for the production costs of them all? What is the thinking behind it? Anyone? Anyone? Yesterday my co-worker Boopsie (remember her? the one who hates Joni's voice because it makes her "epileptic", or as Julius more correctly put it, apopleptic?) came into my office. Looking a little confused, she put her finger on her chin, and said: "I'm looking for something." UH OH! Sweet inspiration! Like putting a quarter in the Wurlitzer and pushing her only button, the Chatty Cathy/Patti Playpal/Jumpin' Joni doll began to sing (fortissimo, ad alta voce): "........what can it be Oh I hate you some, I hate you some, I love you some Oh I love you when I forget about me I want to be strong I want to laugh along I want to belong to the living Alive, alive, I want to get up and jive (then I'm rising up from my desk, looking totally berserk....) ( then I'm trying to get Boopsie to dance, but she is an all-work, anti-pleasure kind of person, poor soul, so she's backing away in fear). Boopsiee then RUNS from my office, hands over her ears, shrieking: "GAWD!!! Now she's SINGING Joni Mitchell! I can't STAND it!" I sang that girl right out of my office. Smoking issues during the live broadcast aside... if she were given the same access to advise and coach the contestants during the prep week that say Neil Sedaka was, then I bet we'd really see a change in the performance of the singers...something VERY different. It doesn't matter if they were to do her songs or others, I think she'd make a fine and challenging A&R person for a week. Dr. Mitchell could easly teach the contestants, the judges and the audience what deep, heartfelt performance and good songwriting can do together. I don't think anyone could argue her resume. Regarding how the other judges would regard her, and vice versa: 1. I think Simon wouldn't stop stammering every time she looked in his direction, 2. I think she'd recognize Paula for her consistently humane treatment of the contestants, and 3. I think she'd tear Randy a new one for having squandered his influence as a record exec.,--full frontal assault on the industry taking out the MUSE and leaving the ICK. Any fears for Joni coming across as a cranky old broad are minimized given the live aspect of the show, as she is normally very charming and engaging. She seems to suffer only at the hands of an editor with an agenda. Oh, it would be colorful. While were here, AI -- where's the Carole King show that would be the shizzle? There's a great American songbook out there, you know where to find it. This morning I bounced in to my lowly cubicle, and everyone was just so blah I started singing "Zip A Dee Doo Dah", and stopped after a couple of lines. Well, Deborah said "keep on singing, Bob" to which I said "you take a line, Deborah", and she said "Ah don't sang" so I continued singing and MADE her fill in the blanks, thusly: Me: My oh my, what a......(pointing at her) Deborah: Wonderful day (spoken with little to no enthusiasm or zest for life) Me: Plenty of.....take it away, Deborah! Deborah: Sunshahn (you have to add the heavy southern accent here) Me: Comin' my way...Zip a dee doo dah, zip a dee ay! Well, I guess you had to be there, but I always enjoy trying to drum some spirit into my co-worker zombies. Deborah was a pretty good sport about the whole thing, nobody's reported me to HR yet so that's cool too. Bob NP: Stevie Wonder, "Did I Hear You Say Love Me" Yahoo! Becker's a fine bassist and co-composer, but his vocals are awful. One listen to "11 Tracks of Whack" and you immediately know why he didn't sing any SD songs. When I saw the Dan live in Raleigh, when Walter started singing one of these songs there was a MASS exit to the potty and beer stands. I felt sorry for Becker, even though it was pretty much justified as a good time to take five. Bob Joni, "Carnival In Kenora" (this would be a song of a prairie girl, right?) Yahoo! Has anyone posted that the big rumour is that Joni will be the special surprise guest at the big Saskatchewan Centenial Celebration in May? I haven't really been paying attention to it, because I could care less about the whole thing, and all I know is that this strange group of people with ties to Saskatchewan are coming for this thing - one of them being Leslie Neilson. Joan isn't mentioned, but CBC radio is abuzz with talk of Joni being the big secret special guest. So of course, I am wondering, do I buy tickets to this hokey thing, or not? Now, the thought of a prairie girl cd makes me excited, although I am probably the only one. "Paprika Plains" always just slaps me in the face with "Saskatchewan-ness".... lol, God, we've all been to those summer dances, with the smell of pine sol and beer, and running out to look at the sky.... Sadly, that small-town stuff is almost a thing of the past. The talk of Railway Avenue (don't know if this is only a Maidstone reference, since North Battleford also has a Railway Avenue which I think fits better with the song), the references to Maidstone, the coyote running through the whisker wheat, floating javex bottles, etc.... all of this connection to the province maybe doesn't seem like a big deal, unless you are from here or lived here. While I will probably always consider the mountains that I lived in as a young child as some sort of primal home, there is also no escaping Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan landscape. Anyway, I'll shut up now, have a great weekend y'all! Rob np: "Stop" - Sam Brown ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Mar 2005 07:26:13 +0000 From: Lucy Hone Subject: root vegetables, blizzards and queens OH MY!!! njc Let me start with a "Thank You" for all my birthday messages... you were all very kind either on or off list... hugs of the international and virtual kind to you all... PARSNIPS... how did I miss this theme??? Parsnips are wonderful.... roasted, though. You Must not eat them any other way....except as a soup with stilton cheese.... that is a wonderful soup.... This is how I do it... I dont do "measures" and believe all cooking is about "feeling it tastes right"so it goes like this Gently fry an onion or two in some butter, NOT OIL..it has to be butter, until onions are soft. NOT BROWN and NOT caramelised. Liberally seasoned them with freshly ground black pepper, a small amount of grated nutmeg is lovely with this also, Add peeled diced parsnips, to the onions and butter..... more if you want lots of soup, less if you dont. Fry them gently with the onions and more butter.. until they are a little bit "wilted" and soft to the touch. Add about a pint or a bit more of chicken or vegetable stock and a glass or two of white wine. Simmer for about half an hour, adding a little more stock or wine, .... if you want to. Whilst this is happening grate a pile of good stilton cheese (a blue tangy cheese from England) you probably have something like it over there... or something stilton-esque... and put some really nice bread rolls into a low oven to heat through. When you are happy that the parsnips are soft enough whizz the "soup from the pan" in a blender and return to the heat. Add a pint of fresh double cream and stir that in. Take the pan off the heat and add in the cheese. Stir it in gently and be ready to serve in bowls immediately with the warm crusty bread.......SUBLIME..filling and a way to get your parsnips down. You can do Broccoli and stilton and also Brussels and stilton....you need to add a bit of sugar with the brussels.... Personally I love all the brassica family of veg but they have to be so carefully almost NOT cooked... There is not alot better.. when the mood takes ...... than a plate of finely shredded savoy cabbage, boiled for a few minutes, if that, tossed in a bit of butter and seasoned with pepper. I also have a dog that will come running the moment he hears me cut into a cabbage... he stands there drooling for the stalk!!! My kids? cant get them near cabbage or any greens at all... I didnt like them either then,,, but now!!! Have to go, no blizzards here but lots of spring flowers, and birds singing... Oh I am, having a Sassoon moment... I must share it with you... "Everyone suddenly burst out singing And I was filled with such delight as prisoned birds must find in freedom Winging wildly across the white orchards and dark green fields; on, on and out of sight.... Everyones voice was suddenly lifted and beauty came like the setting sun My heart was shaken with tears, and horror Drifted away......... O but everyone was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done............... Siegfried Sassoon............sigh Doesn't war rob us of some amazing thinkers and poets........ isnt it all a waste.
