Some really great music out lately. New and reissues 1. Amos Lee (has anyone heard him) Great new cd. 2. Kasey Chambers Wayward Angel 3. Judee Sill Self Titled and Heartfood 6. Patty Griffin Impossible Dream (what a great cd this is) 7. Tift Merritt Tambourine 8. Rick Roberts Windmill/She Is A Song 2 lps on one cd 9. Van Morrison Veedon Fleece (old as the hills but I keep giving it away so I bought another copy) 10. It just has that flavor to it. Neon and pastels, men in white jackets, deco hotels....illegal stuff, cigarette boats, lol. And the production matches! Was perfect for the time when it came out. (was it like '80 maybe? or '79?) Makes me feel pleasantly sunburned just thinking about it. I think the earlier albums are argueably better..but I loved Gaucho so very much, and have over the years bought more copies of it than any other SD. Cassetes! yikes...for car purposes. "3rd World Man"...whew....maybe that would have been a good neighbor near Harry's House. (tho I know HH was in CA). anyway..just some thoughts on Gaucho, amigo... Joni was well into her jazz period then and she probably acknowledged them for the brilliant artists they were. There's such a sophistication in Steely Dan's music that's not unlike Joni's. Have their paths never crossed?" A hearty 'yeah' to that rationale. Their paths certainly appear to have crossed only through sessioneers and guests: Wayne Shorter; Larry Carlton; Victor Feldman (who played on Hissing and Countdown to Ecstasy, the uppermost of the seven SD albums in my top 50!); Pat Metheny went on tour with Joni and performed a gorgeous version of Sign In Stranger with Don Fagen. I've another couple of theories, though. 1) The fraternal Becker-Fagen dynamic would never allow a third party to do any more than twiddle the odd knob (a la Gary Katz); 2) for all their myriad virtues, Becker and Fagen don't seem to have a terribly high opinion of women. Intriguingly enough, my two favourite male musicians are reportedly working together, namely Fagen and Todd Rundgren, the prospects for which arouse unfulfillabable expectations and boggle the mind - Nyro-meets-Yes-meets-Brubeck-meets-Diner-meets-Altered-States? Maybe Joni should pop over to Hawaii for a margarita with Don and his partner Libby Titus, Levon Helm's ex, whose path one assumes Joni crossed at some juncture or other. With love from Cornwall! PS. I reckon Joni regards/regarded Laura Nyro (after whom I named my daughter) in much the same way as Rickie Lee regarded her - with not inconsiderable awe and a concomitant refusal to play the apprentice. This was performed at the "Stormy Weather" concert on April 16, 1998, but the duet was not included on the promo disk. It is rumored that it might be available on extremely rare "unofficial" recordings. If anyone here has a copy of this performance, would you be so kind as to contact me off-list? I remember seeing a clip of Joni on VH-1 Classic singing Big Yellow Taxi a while back. I was glad to see that the same clip is a bonus track. Was anyone else impressed with how graceful and just plain cool Joni looked playing those tunes, especially BYT? I just think it was such a cool vibe, with her hands gracefully hitting all the right notes on the neck. It's probably old hat to a lot of you, but it is new to me. I got into Joni when they showed this on PBS a few years back, and I watched some of it as a Neil and CSN(Y) fan. Boy howdy, I'm glad I payed attention that night. The delivery of Hejira on this DVD is just so amazing on that track. That arrangement would make the most annoying TV jingle sound like Heaven's Bells. Peace to all, Matt Mc In Sunny Mississippi PS: Does anyone know if Joni tuned down a 1/2 step or more at some point in her live shows to accomodate her changing voice. (I know she usually had alternate tunings, but wonder if she lowered them.) Just thought I might try to match her tunings from this DVD to see if I can sing. As a dude, it's hard to hit the early Joni notes without bodily injury. :-0 ================================================== "And I'll stand before you, and I'll bring a smile to your eyes." Yes, there are some very piggy people in this world. Didn't their parents teach them anything? I am constantly appalled at seeing how much garbage there is everywhere, very often within a matter of a few feet from a garbage can. And don't get me started on icky bumper stickers. I remember reading a quote about T-shirts, but it could apply to bumper stickers as well: If I'm not interested in what you have to say, what makes you think I want to hear from your T-shirt? I don't understand why people use them at all, much less put all those stupid bobble-head dolls and junk in their cars. The only thing in my car is the garbage my kids have tossed in the back. D...S...L!!!! Still some bugs to work out, but I'm giving you all fair warning -- I'll probably be spending more time online now. Oh, also, I got a somewhat weather-beaten Joni songbook in the mail today, the one of the first three albums -- i had hoped it was the earlier version, that had about, what, 6 or 8 of the early NON-album songs, but no dice -- is there anyone who has that book (they were one of the raffle items at the '03 fest) who'd be willing to trade just those songs for some other sheet music. I don't have anything that unusual, but maybe -- anyway, there's always Ghirardelli's or See's chocolates. If you have the songs and are interested, please contact me off-list. I'm keeping AOL, for now, anyway, so I'll be at this address. D...S...L!!!! (I know, it's like I'm the first one to discover sex or something, but I'd just gotten used to 56K!)
