Now me: After listening to the Joni's Choice cd and transcribing her notes from the liner for someone special, I consider this disc as a long awaited second chapter to the My Top 12 show from the BBC May 29, 1983 (Tape Tree #5.) Billie was on that one just for you Mark ;-) And Laura for those of us with leanings in her direction. The Edith Piaf track was the only repeat in the two sets. The title track of Gaucho was there too, so that makes 3 SD tracks on the two disks. hmmm. Wonder what that means? And Joni being Joni (as always, G-d bless her) she manages to work one of her own compositions onto each setlist. Go Joan!!! 'different trains' (1988) was originally composed for string quartet and vocal tape loops, but in 2000 reich orchestrated it for a 48 person string orchestra. in 1999, he also string-orchestrated 'triple quartet', which was originally composed for quartet plus two recorded quartets, or for 3 quartets. 'triple quartet' was originally premiered and recorded by kronos, also in 1999. last fall, the first recordings of the orchestral versions of those two pieces were released on a cd, david robertson conducting the orchestre national de lyon, with 'the four sections' (1986), reich's last piece composed for full orchestra. i heard the world premiere recordings of 'electric counterpoint' (the only time i've heard pat metheny live) and 'the four sections' in 1987 at the brooklyn academy of music. dance music fans may remember that the orb's 'little fluffy clouds' used as its major musical sample a lick from the third movement of electric counterpoint. patrick np - u2, lemon - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of mike pritchard Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 5:26 AM To: list Cc: patrick leader Subject: RE: last 10 cd purchases NJC >>steve reich - 'different trains' and 'triple quartet' for orchestra, four sections<< Hi Patrick, would that be the version by the Kronos Quartet, issued with with Pat Metheny's 'Electric Counterpoint' ? mike in barcelona, who loves them both... Wonder what that means? Fagen & Becker were the best writers IMO during that rock jazz-influenced music of the late 70s early 80s. Joni was well into her jazz period then and she probably acknowledged them for the brilliant artists they were. There's such a sophistication in Steely Dan's music that's not unlike Joni's. Have their paths never crossed? I recently saw Dean Parks (played on Aja) with Crosby Nash. Introducing Parks, Crosby said Aja was undoubtedly his fave album ever. There's a semi related article about Crosby's son's band at: http://crosbycpr.com/content/features/features_text/Goldmine_99.html They also turn in a terrific version of Joni Mitchell's masterpiece, "For Free." However, this wasn't merely a 'retro/best of' concert, as they confidentially unveiled four new songs (including two written or co-written by Raymond) which are also included on their debut studio effort. The vocals are superb throughout, and the musicianship is miles beyond the somewhat loose and ragged CSN sound. Raymond has a slick, jazz-influenced piano style, and combined with Pevar's Larry Carlton and Phil Keaggy-esque guitar phrasings, the overall sound is similar to a youthful CSN backed by a cross between Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell circa Court and Spark. I think Aja should have been in MY Top 50. And I will take none of them, thank you. For all of their sophistication and craft, they just don't speak to me. I don't feel much of anything listening to a Steely Dan song. And the sound of the vocals grate on me if I listen too closely. It's as if the singer is swallowing at the end of each word or has a sore throat or something. I guess it's one of those voices I just don't care for. But I guess even Joni's taste isn't 100% perfect!
