If I remember correctly you included 'The Curse of Millhaven' in your list and O'Malley's Bar (my choice) is taken from the 'Murder Ballads' too. I agree with your (re)view, and especially like the tracks Easy Money, Carry Me and O Children. He is certainly a damn fine writer and singer. What about Ute Lemper's version of his 'Little Water Song' or Polly Jean's contribution to the Murder Ballads, and Kylie Minogue's if it comes to that? mike in barcelona np Easy Money -Nick Cave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Mar 2005 12:03:15 +0000 From: Lucy Hone Subject: welcome to JMDL NJC AH HAH! I have to admit I'm getting curious. Had based my mental thumbs-down on his very successful "Hallelujah" when I love Jeff Buckley's ever so much mo' bettah (not a fair way to judge, I know) - and on the way off-key harmony on "Mendocino" off the McGarrigle Hour. But, you know - to be fair, maybe his monitor wasn't working. It is by far my favorite cd of the past 6 months, and for me, that is saying a lot since I buy and listen to so many. I am not blind to all of his music. There is some I don't like, and I have posted about how some of his earlier behavior was annoying. But he continues to amaze me as an artist, and he is so young that it excites me that there is so much more to come. Has he made missteps? Yes, as do all artists who take risks. But he reminds me a lot of Jeff Buckley, and though they never met, Rufus credits him as a great influence. And we all know how much Jeff admired Joni. So it has always excited me that there is a Joni, Jeff, Rufus connection. I was afraid that contractually they'd try and bind me into something -- whereas I'd rather be bound in leather -- just kidding! I have always been excited by the history of gay culture and the real tradition of high art and high standards which has existed for hundreds of years. I've drawn on that, and felt I was at a tremendous advantage because I could draw on that and carry on that tradition. That fuelled me and helped me. Some people think 'he's too gay' or 'maybe he's too much of an opera queen,' but I found it tremendously useful." -- Singer Rufus Wainwright to Australia's 4ZZZ Queer Radio and Queensland Pride newspaper, Jan. 12. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Mar 2005 17:05:05 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: sjc, Joni Art Cards Bonjour, Lindsey, kindred free (wo)man in Paris in the 70s! Oh, I wish these Joni art cards really were available. I would buy a case of them, for sure! I would then stop buying so much from www.quotablecards.com. I send a lot of cards, and find myself buying a lot of these (but don't worry, Marianne, Bree and Ashara -- they are printed on recycled paper). I am a lover of words and language and quotes (you should see my refrigerator!) so these babies work for me. The quoteable card that graces my desk at work this month says "Peace begins with a smile." -- Mother Teresa. That one usually disarms the telephone screamers and grouchy people. But to have Joni quotes and art cards that I could plaster all over my living and working spaces -- way cool! And if you'll pardon my free association rambling here, another lovely quotable card I just read reminds me a bit of the JMDL: "To know someone with whom you can feel there is understanding in spite of distance or thoughts unexpressed....that can make this life a garden." -- Goethe Yes, this list is some semblance of a garden! Peace, Patti P.S. Loved those photos, Smurf & Wally & Jody & Anne! Merci beacoup for sharing.....so glad you had a good time (a picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words). I imagine Boston will never be the same: the curse now gone, and then you four guys a boppin' and a stompin' in the city! Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2005 15:31:33 -0800 From: Lindsay Moon Subject: Joni Art Cards See what you think of this. I was recently in an upscale card shop where they had lovely cards such as black and white 1950's Vogue fashion shoots with info on the photographer, model, dress designer, etc. on the back. A nice idea and a little fashion history lesson about things maybe forgotten. Here's my idea: blank cards with Joni's art (album covers) on them, a nice boxed set of assorted cards, maybe the cover of C&S, the inside fold of FTR, the cover of Blue, her still lifes, etc., etc. They would be square, like an album or CD. They could each have a little blurb on the back with the year of the album, a little history of it, maybe a short quote from Joni. Printed on beautiful paper. They are beautiful art already. They would be a lovely gift in a nice box tied with some grosgrain ribbon. Maybe the box is copper colored and the ribbon is turquoise like the colors of Paprika Plains. They would be easy as pie to produce since the artwork already exists. She could give the proceeds to charity if she wanted. It's probably too commercial an idea for her (and we must not let the evil Hallmark people produce them!) but, heck, I'm not talking about keychains (yet.)
