But you gotta read the fine print. Costello chose "For the Roses" from the album of the same name, but what you get on the CD is the maudlin, self-pitying, bloated TLOG version--surely one of TLOG's low-points. I think it's Joni's most contrived vocal performances. Yuck! "It's nearly impossible to choose between the intimate, emotionally raw songs of Blue and the novelist's eye for details in a portrait song such as 'Shades of Scarlet Conquering,'" explains Elvis Costello. "I chose 'For The Roses' (from the album of the same name) for inclusion on Joni Mitchell: Selected Songs because it is somewhere in between -- there are tiny details of a lover's infidelity, but the musical tone is also confidential and it sets up a bold and unflinching look at an artist trying to detach from the deceits of fame." It's just a coffee place, for gawds sake!<< mike continues I'm with Catherine on this one, although I would not say 'evil'. In 'No Logo' Naomi Klein gives her reasons for criticising Starbucks. Some very shady business practices; here are some of her accusations, not mine. Clustering - saturating an area until the competition is fierce enough to hurt sales even in Starbucks' own stores, but especially the competitots'. Their real estate strategy used to involve lease poaching; approaching the owners of thriving coffee shops and buying out the leases without approaching the coffee shops themselves. Chicago's Scenes Coffee House and Dram received an eviction notice after Starbucks rented a space in the shopping complex where it was located. The company attempted a similar maneuver with Dooney's cafi in Toronto, though Starbucks claim it was the landlord who made the original approach. Starbucks did gain control of Dooney's but the community protest was so strong that the company ended up having to sublet the space back to Dooney's. In 1997 they shut down the Vancouver distribution plant when it unionised. They keep full time workers on part-time contracts, thus denying workers the rights they'd have if they were working full-time. Their software programme 'Star Labour' tailors the shift length to match its busy periods, and this shift could last only 4 and a half hours, in some cases from 5 a.m to 9.30. This flexibility not only matches supply to demand but serves to exclude workers who would normally qualify for paid overtime, full benefits and higher wage scales. The union claimed 10,000 of the company's so called part-timers in fact worked between 35 and 39 hours a week, just under the cut-off to qualify for these benefits. New employees in British Columbia faced wage cuts - from 7.5 Canadian dollars to 7 per hour, while the company was doubling its profits and opening a new store almost every day. Etc... Gus continues >>...BUT, when I go out of town, I am so thankful that Starbucks exists. I have wasted so much money, and poured out so many cups of really awful coffee and supposed espresso drinks that were.. well... undrinkable. At least I know that at Starbucks, what I order will be consistent with what I got at another Starbucks. Sometimes, that is very, very welcome.<< The US must be the 'really awful coffee' capital of the world, at least for people in Spain, Portugal and Italy who know what real coffee tastes like. In my trip across the US in '96 I found only one cup of coffee that was drinkable (in the Grand Canyon park). I agree with Gus on this point: if you like the coffee that Starbucks sell, then wherever you find a Starbucks that's what you'll get. Personally I wouldn't drink their coffee for free, both because of the lack of coffee taste in my mouth, and also because of the bitter, unethical taste produced by the methods that have made their chain grow. >>Starbucks is a well-run company, and certainly not evil. << Yes, and not proven, respectively. mike in barcelona, who remembers being taken to a Starbucks in the Castro barrio as a 'treat'... sheesh, some treat for someone who likes real coffee. Well, if you thought what I posted was "snotty" (a word my sister liked to use in the 50s), be assured that what I didn't post was edited everything down like 15 times. I went to great lenghts to observe your hyper sensitivity. You never like anyone disagreeing with you. That is not my responsibility. Whenever someone uses the phrase "for a Rev...." it is guarenteed that controlling type bullshit will follow. And it was here, to be sure. The last sentence there Colin is utter bullshit and it is offensive that you try to recast what you posted. You did not observe that you respected the art form of rap but did not like it. This had nothing to do with your not liking a form of music that I like. Indeed, Colin, grow up and get mature, and put your bitchy whiny self-involved ways behind. You attacked a form of art in its totality, using invective and pejorative statements to attack the entire art form, and brought the word "racism" into play. Take responsibility for what you posted. Had you observed that you did not like that form of music, no one would have cared. A great majority here does not like rap, I am sure. You attacked the entire genre with harsh and bitter judgments based on your admitted 'I won't listen to it, I hate it' bias. Own up to what you said. And whenever someomne disagrees with you, you get angry and upset and attack, in your best fucking bitchy mode. If you want to go out and make overly broad attack generalizations, which is your right, be prepared that you may indeed get a response, and not everyone is going to say, "yes, Colin, dear, you are right as always." If my horse were one one-hundredth as high as yours, Colin, I could touch the sky. Vince PS I thought David's response was a tad bit strong ("asswipe") but also right on in substance. The attack was made. If I were to post an identical word for word post on, say, jazz, there would be strong response, just maybe not the word "asswipe." Which is to say, attack something and there will be a reaction. Say you don't like something but respect it none the less, and no one will care. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 12:48:34 -0500 From: Lori Fye Subject: Re: boots was Re: was: Anybody Watch .... You are going to make it...I know it. Each day is a struggle I know but you know what? It's always something and you are not alone. So many of us struggle to survive day to day. I have a friend who is bi-polar and she has a very candid and simple view of her struggle. She told me that these are the cards she was dealt with so she deals the best way she can. She takes her medication every day, she sees her therapist regularly and she keeps an emotional inventory of how she is feeling. It's the only way she can stay in control. I am a diabetic. Even if I kept my sugar levels at perfectly normal levels and did not require any type of medication for the rest of my life, I would still be a diabetic. I can never take that for granted. Luther Vandross' situation is a perfect example of what happens when a diabetic forgets. I'm not blaming him because I walk in his shoes. I know how frustrating it is to have to constantly toe the line. I know of diabetics who have just given up. Depression is a cart/horse situation and is a major problem for us; But my friend takes a very simple yet profound view of her situation. She accepts the fact that she can't change who she is and what she has, she can only find the best way she knows how to cope and deal with it. She really inspires me. Helping others is so cathartic. It is its own therapy. My heart and thoughts will be with you Laura as you take this daily journey. You are not alone. My only regret for the new starbucks release, is the exclusion from "Joni's picks" of "Captain for Dark Mornings" one of her spoken favorites. We have mentioned this on the UTNE CAFE site where a lot of us Nyrofreaks write daily. Even Joni Mitchell, known for not crediting anyone short of Mozart or Picasso with influencing her music, said that "Nyro was the only female artist with whom she'd accept any linkage. "Laura Nyro you can lump me in with," she said in a 1998 interview, "because Laura exerted an influence on me. I looked to her and took some direction from her." For those of you have have not heard it, find it and go listen. New York Tendaberry is the cd. Its amazing. - -- Your lil NyroNut Nyrogrl.....nyrogrL@yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 13:32:41 -0500 From: "John T. Hmmm??? ; ) I do wear leather Harley boots when I ride, but not because they're Harley -- in fact I'd rather they weren't by Harley. (Did you know Harley Davidson actually makes more from its clothing sales than it does from its motorcycle sales? How sad is that?!) Nope, I wear those boots because they're comfortable and because, while they have laces, they also have zippers on the sides. But they're useless in the rain; I can't tell you how many times I've literally poured a cup of water from each of those boots. (I need a new pair of good boots!!) Also wear a variety of jackets with body armor in the shoulders, elbows, upper & lower back. In the winter (and I've ridden all winter this year, in snow and in 20-degree temps) I wear a pair of kickass armored pants that are insulated and really warm. And of course heavy leather gloves (lighter ones for warmer weather). With all that on, plus my full face helmet, they guys at work tell me I look like RoboCop. (I really look more like Joe Rocket, but they don't know the difference.) You've seen this, yes? http://lrfye.lunarpages.com/lori-oct302004.jpg The helmet sticker I'm pointing to says: BIKERS ARE A RARE BREED Harley riders are a dime a dozen ; ) Lori P.S. - Em?
