Over the years, critics have referred to Joni as a folksinger. That label has bothered her in the past. But lately, she's come to terms with it. JM: I've done some thinking about it. I asked myself why I was so offended by that title. There was a book auction last year or the year before -- time goes so quickly, I'm not certain now. And I forget what the organization was. But these books were raffled off. We were to pick a book that was important to us, a book that we loved in hardback version, and we were to sign it and it was auctioned off and Jane Siberry auctioned a book and so did Leonard and so did I. Leonard Cohen was listed in the program as a poet. Jane Siberry was listed, I believe, as a pop composer. And I was listed as a folksinger. And I found that offensive. You know, I thought Canada doesn't really understand me, my talent. Because I entered the game there as a folksinger, singing folk songs. The moment I crossed the border into the United States, I began to write my own music. My music has roots in classical music. The harmony that came out of my playing in open tunings, of which I have about 45 now, modalities, almost like Eastern ragas, and the internal harmonies that I heard, harmony being a depiction of your internal emotion, my emotions internally being quite complex. Never is my joy completely joyous, there is always a thread of dissonance running through it. The dissonance today is the black oil washing up on Middle Eastern shores, and there's always a dissonance, especially if you think a lot. So my joy is always against a backdrop of a world in trouble. So the chords are more complex than simple emotions. Pop music likes its happiness major and its tragedy minor and perhaps a blue note here and there. I think if I'm a folksinger, then Marvin Gaye was a folksinger; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are folksingers. If I'm a folksinger, everything is folk music. http://www.jmdl.com/library/view.cfm?id=729 Quoting Phyliss : > Ha! She played in Ottawa in 1969 when I was 12, and didn't return 'til 1998 with some guy named Bob Dylan in one of those overblown mega-stadium events that I can't stand. I didn't see either show. I did "see" her with Bob's Rolling Thunder Review in Montreal from the back of the Montreal Forum. They looked like ants on stage, but I digress. I saw Dylan in 1992 in Ottawa with the Neville Brothers, Joe Cocker, and Michelle Shocked. Bob was the worst. If his name wasn't Bob Dylan he would have been booed off stage, he was so bad. (imho). But I digress again. In the '70s When Canadian singer-songwriters like Gord Lightfoot, Murray Mclauglan, Bruce Cockburn were celebrated here, Joni was somewhere else. Even Stompin' Tom Conners got more press. (not that I dislike Stompin' Tom). So if Joni is thought of here as a "folksinger", it's her own fault for being absent for so long. Looking at Simon's excellent Chronology I see that out of 463 appearances from 1970 to 2000, only 42 were in Canada. Joni we hardly know ye! It has been since college, but in the past the evening went like: Albums and photos around the room, STSG playing in the backround as people arrive First session is "witnessing" that first Joni moment--what song, how old, where you were, etc. Then a go around with favorite songs and/or lines. (I'll always remember my dear friend talking about her line: "We love our love'n, but not like we love our freedom." I never knew that about her.) Then we get into it with a Circle Game Debate. In my experience, the Joni world is divided by those who love or hate this song; then there are those of us who hate it even though it moves us to tears. Embarrassing, regrettable cheese, or precious, poignant poetry? One of the videos rounds out the party -- is there anything better than WOHAM? "when my daughter was taken from me..." can mean "... by circumstances over which I had no control, where I had to give her away for her best interest." Those of us - and I mean us, myself included - who have lost children in whatever way usually can only speak in small fragments of what we mean when we talk about it because the fullness of emotion and fact becomes too long and too heavy. I lost my kids to spousal kidnapping twice, and then after a long court fight in which the issue was I was the gay adoptive parent, and that was all it took to deny me my children. Like Joni, I have a relationship with the grandchildren, although unlike her, mine is not through my child but through the other parent of the grandchildren. When Joni, as I do, speaks of these things, it is only in partial pieces, because to speak of the whole takes too long and gets too depressing so strand-in phrases are used, not always consistently.
