This time I bought a stack of crumbly "Melody Maker" rags from some kind soul in the UK, who must've been cleaning out their attic. I can imagine them taking whatever antiques they discovered to the "Antiques Roadshow - UK Edition" and selling what remained to some restless American sod, like me, on eBay. Anyways, I open the parcel and there's synchro staring right back at me: On the cover of Melody Maker, September 5, 1970 (Isle of Wight Special) Large feature pic of Joni playing her Martin. Caption reads: "Joni Mitchell scored a notable personal triumph at the Isle of Wight. Despite two disturbing interruptions - one by a fan and one by a man who grabbed the mike between songs and tried to blurt out a message to the "revolutionaries" - she overcame her considerable nervousness and stunned the crowd with a set full of peerlessly beautiful songs, leaving to an ovation after several encores. Neil Young, who accompanied Joni to the island, was set to make a guest appearance on Saturday night, but left quickly - he was reported to be upset by the festival's overall atmosphere." And if this ain't synchro, then maybe I don't truly understand the term: right below and to the right of the Joni pic, there's a small photo of Charles Mingus with caption "First Time in Britain." The blurb reads: "Mingus for Britain - Charles Mingus, one of the most controversial figures in jazz, stars at Ronnie Scott's Club in London for three weeks from November 9. "It will be his first time here, and he will be with his new quintet," Ronnie Scott told MM on Tuesday. "And opposite him I have booked a very good group I heard early last week, Mark-Almond." On the cover of Melody Maker, January 27, 1973 Large feature pic of Roberta Flack at piano. Caption reads: "Roberta Flack brought out the stars to witness her concert in London's Royal Albert Hall last Thursday. Maggie Bell (?), Leonard Cohen, Cave Clark and England soccer captain Bobby Moore were among the audience. Roberta's new single "Killing Me Softly With His Song" is released here this week - her long awaited follow-up to last year's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" smash." These things are chock-full of lore and history really. Priceless stuff, if you're me (and you're not, so nevermind, I guess). I'll read on and maybe ther'll be more tidbits worth sharing. Thanks for not laughing out loud in the bad way. ;-) - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 13:04:27 +0100 From: "mike pritchard" Subject: Re: sharing Top 50 songs NJC >>Seriously now, if you save mp3s to a CD, as opposed to burning a CD, does that mean you can pack in 10x as many of the suckers onto one CDR? Is that the difference between an mp3 player and a regular CD player? I never could figure that out, but just realize the new disc player I've got claims to play both mp3 and whatever-the-other-things-are-called. My initial reaction was, "So? Don't they all?" but I guess they don't.<< Now look here McKay, if you don't understand the tech, ask your kids, or RTFM! Seriously now, YES you can pack in lots of stuff onto one CD-R if they're in mp3 format (and possibly other formats too but I think they occupy more space). I made a compilation of piano jazz for Chuck E when he was over here and it contains 110 songs (actually all instrumentals) and many of them are 5, 6, or 8 minutes long. I can't work out how long this is but I guess the rule of thumb is approx 4 MB per 3 minute song divided into an 800 MB CDR = 200 3 minute songs on one CDR. The quality is more or less CD quality, although you can make it better or worse if you want to fit in fewer or more songs respectively. I guess the 'whatever-the-other-things-are-called' are Windows files (WMA or WMP?) but I have problems, especially with Windows XP and prefer to use mp3 format files. If you want to listen to 110 of my favourite jazz piano tracks, send your address and I'll pop it over the pond for you. mike in barcelona. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 08:36:03 -0500 From: "David Henderson" Subject: RE: Sherelle's list NJC - now Carole King Have you heard her latest, Billie's Bones? Yes, that was him-he was a techie who quit his day job, built an advanced home studio, and recorded the first Boston album there, which was just the sort of commercial Journey-esque fodder that FM was lapping up at the time. Looking this on up on Amazon and listening to a clip, it turns out the version you were listening to is the Verve recording from 1956, Julius. Joplin-esque is a good description of the piano. Oscar Peterson played on a lot of the Verve dates but not this one. Piano is credited to Wynton Kelly in the 'Complete BH on Verve'. I love the last version of 'Judy at Carnegie Hall' that was released that includes a lot of her stage patter. After she finishes her unbelievably energized verion of 'Come Rain or Come Shine' she acknowledges Arlen who is in the audience: 'Harold Arlen, stand up. We do practically all of his music during the show. There is no better music.' Arlen gave Judy the melodies to her two signature songs, the apparently ubiquitous 'Over the Rainbow' and 'The Man That Got Away'. I think one of the reasons I love 'The Second Barbra Streisand Album' so much is because 5 of the 11 songs are Harold Arlen melodies including my favorite Streisand song, 'When the Sun Comes Out'. 'Stormy Weather' is another famous Arlen standard. I love his music and would give anything to be at this concert. That said, I strongly have to disagree with "Love Grows ..." being on this list - its just too fun a bar song and drunken gang song to sing. I mean what next "Build Me up Buttercup?" But strongly have to go with most of the rest - especially "The Night Chicago Died", "Seasons in the Sun" and "Having My Baby" - which I know hits close to home with you and I. This, I swear to you, is the > absolute truth. I believe you ;o)! When I was about 14, I also sent a fan letter to Carole King (the only one I've ever sent in my life - and full of adolescent angst) but unfortunately the only address I could find was for one of the recording studios she used in LA, and it got sent back "undeliverable". I was devastated! But I have a video of Carole King, mostly of a studio concert she did in the 80's (a little like PWWAM) interspersed with interview footage, and I would agree that she appears to be one of the nicest people around. Very down to earth, and incredibly modest about her work. Unlike someone else we all know and love! One piece stands out - when asked about You've Got A Friend, she said she agrees that it's an incredible song, but she doesn't feel that she wrote it. She said she felt it was written "through her". Hell P.S. Paz - I gave you a copy of that video (in PAL format) at Jonifest 2001 because a very young Eric Johnson plays in Carole's band. Did you ever manage to convert and watch it? _________________________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too" - Walt Whitman Hell's Pages - a whole new experience! http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 18:25:36 -0500 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: now Carole King, njc heh heh. Its a warm fuzzy squeaky-clean pre-AIDS porn flick in your radio. Straight from the "Boogie Nights" era!
