I LOVED singing that one, we had three guys trading off lines and we had a blast, and it was a real crowd-pleaser. Like Helen, I liked Carole King for quite a while before I found The True Center. I bought 7 albums from "Writer" through "Really Rosie". Without Carole, the Beatles wouldn't have had "Chains". The radio wouldn't have had "Corazon". Most of all, Aretha Franklin wouldn't have given us her take on (You Make Me Feel) "Like a Natural Woman". At random I pulled out Carole's album "Music" to better remember the quality of her writing. This wasn't her biggest seller, but it had "It's Going to Take Some Time", "Sweet Seasons", and "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Carole had "it" compared to, say, Tom Scholz of Boston. No offense to the fine people of Boston. I fell in love with the It's Too Late single on the radio (b/w I Feel The Earth Move), and I decided to make the jump from singles to my first LP. I think it was about $2.50, and I had to mow two lawns to raise the money. When I saw the LP for the first time, I was shocked; I thought she was black! I made Mr. Harper, the owner of our town's only record store promise I could bring it back if it was not the It's Too Late lady! (BTW I have my original LP of Hejira with its $3.99 price sticker.) Music was great, and then came Rhymes and Reasons. I really loved that record because it was so dark and intense to me. I think the first side with Come Down Easy, My My She Cries, Feeling Sad Tonight is so bleak, almost claustrophic, and then side two slowly becomes hopeful and even joyful with Ferguson Road and Been to Canaan. It's always been a story about surviving a relationship to me, but where I ever got that idea I have no idea. As much as I love these albums, it's Fantasy that has stood the test of time for me. It's the one (along with the In Concert LP) that I still listen to. I really loved that 70's urban sound of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, and Fantasy was a companion to that groove. I started drifting away after that . . . my need for those types of songs completely taken over by C&S, THOSL, Hejira and DJRD. Actually, my freshmen year in high school, I sort of moved on from Carole, Carly Simon, James Taylor for the darker pastures of Joni and Janis Ian. Here's my list: My all-time Carole favorites are Will You Love Me Tomorrow from Tapestry and A Quiet Place To Live from Fantasy. Others ... Music, Brother, Brother, It's Going to Take Some Time and Some Kind of Wonderful from Music So Far Away and Way Over Yonder from Tapestry Come Down Easy and Feeling Sad Tonight (love that pounding piano) from Rhymes You've Been Around Too Long, Directions and Heywood from Fantasy Only Love is Real from Thoroughbred And I love the live versions of Jazzman and Beautiful on Carole King In Concert . . . alright, I'll confess I also love The Locomotion from In Concert too. For some reason, I always imagine that Carole King would be the nicest and sweetest of all of the famous singer-songwriters - loving and kind (Sorry Joni!!). David NP I'm listening to Paprika Plains for the first time in about 15 years because Catherine (I think) made me feel bad for dissing it earlier . . . trying to keep an open mind . . . but I don't know . . . eek! that orchestra . . . still hanging in there . . . ;) >>>-----Original Message----- >>>From: hell [mailto:hell@ihug.co.nz] >>>Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2005 5:19 PM >>>To: Mark or Travis; David Henderson; Joni Mitchell List >>>Subject: RE: Sherelle's list NJC - now Carole King >>> >>> >>>Mark wrote: >>> >>>> I bought the cd of 'Rhymes and Reasons' a while back. I see you must like Rhymes and Reasons, too. It's funny how certain songs of the thousands in my head pop up over and over again. When I'm really down, I always end-up with Come Down Easy in my head . . . there's something about that section, "God bless the children, God bless us all," that comforts me. That song is so real it almost hurts. That's a good story about the note from Carole. Do you remember what her handwriting was like? When I was 19, my mother threw out a bunch of old clothes in my closet, including my two favorite concert t-shirts - my Heart baseball jersey and my Rickie Lee Jones t-shirt. Ugh! When I was in high school, I left behind most of the singer-songwriters I liked growing up for the darker shades of Joni, Janis, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee, Motels, Blondie, but I found myself returning back to those simpler, happier tunes of Carole and JT in my late 30's. You gotta have some balance, right?
