They're from her regular albums. I think Fire and Rain and He Ain't Heavy are from Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. My Love and The Long and Winding Road are from Half-Breed, and What'll I Do is from Dark Lady. They're kind of odd choices (except for What'll I Do). On Gypsies, for example, the exquisite The Way of Love and the melodramatic (and delicious) He'll Never Know are better than these. And I wonder why they didn't add the phenomenal I Saw A Man and He Danced With His Wife to this collection? Garret said, "NP - Cher, You've Got A Friend/Where You Lead." (njc) Yes!! Sweet Charity opens here on Broadway in April with Christina Applegate in the lead. This show is pure bliss - an offbeat love story that's a little dark around the edges, thanks to Fosse. I was lucky enough to see the last revival in 1988 or so with Debbie Allen and Bebe Neuwirth three times. Even if you don't usually like musicals but you like 60's pop/soul, you will like this show. Numbers like Rich Man's Frug, the black church number and Where Am I Going? will transfer you right back to 1965. The more traditional Broadway tunes are fantastic too - the best known are If My Friends Could See Me Now and Big Spender (Bebe Neuwirth was the tough, wise-cracking "madam" in the last revival!). But I gush . . . I guess you can tell I'm a little excited about this. God, I hope Miss Applegate can sing! I chose were songs that tugged on my heart emotionally or musically and gave me a special memory. For instance, "Till the End of the Day" by the Kinks was a song we listened to when I lived in England in from 1965 to 1968. There was this three chord intro, a pause and then he breaks out with, "Baby I feel good!" and the music was so contagious, you just wanted to jump out of your skin and dance. Through no fault of my parents, I had a very sad childhood for some unknown reason (heredity I think) and so the memory of that song always jolted me out of my sadness and made me dance. The dance of that time was the jerk. I loved that dance! Also, the pony was in but it was more fun to do the jerk to that song. Dancing always brought me out of my sadness and so I danced as if no one was watching. I have to remember that. There is one of my musical memories.... Love, Sherelle Mags wrote: I was wondering how everyone chose their top 50 too. I went through my CDs and chose the songs that move me to the core. Wanted to give a little plug for some of the lesser known artists. It might have been fun to see explanations as to why people chose the songs they did, for certain, there is a story wrapped around each and every one. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 07:55:42 -0800 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: Obscure Dinne songs... Ruby was interviewing various celebrities, and this show happened to be about Hugh Hefner. Mamie appeared at the party he was throwing, and I have to say that while she may have been a sex goddess in the past, as Eddy (AbFab) would say, "Mr. Gravity has been very unkind to that woman", she definitely wasn't looking her best. As an aside, Ruby is one of my favourite comedians (her book "How Do You Want Me?" is hilarious, but she had a childhood to rival Joan Crawford's kids....) I'm not sure if I've mentioned this here before (probably) but the stand-out moment of this show was when she was interviewing the "bunnies" in Hefner's mansion. They were talking about how there was no jealousy and one of the woman said "it's just like a big sorority, and we're all sisters"! Ruby paused, then replied, "Yes, but you're all sleeping with Daddy..." Went over like a ton of bricks. She and I had lived in the same apartment building and quickly became friends. We were like brother and sister, it was so uncanny. For 12 years it was like that. The day she died we had plans to spend the day together. I had called and left several messages on her machine, whid I'm sure the cops heard. Some were funny, some were snide, and the final one was worried. A mutual friend called a half hour after the news report aired- which I saw, but since they did not mention her name , I disregarded it. I thought my friend was joking. I finally got angry and told him it wasn't funny any longer and threatened to hang up on him, telling him not to call me anymore. His partner came on the phone and said it was true... Months later I had gone to talk to the detective on her case. He shared with me some details not known to the general public. All fine and good, but the case was cold. They could trace her steps until 2:30 that Monday morning, but did not know where she had been from then until they found her still-warm body outside a school playground at 5:30 am. No news- leads or new suspects ever surfaced. Sometimes I would like to light the fire under some of these detectivess to get back on the case. Any suggestions? The mayor just had this big comment on murder in the city and I thought about writing him a letter- for starters. Feel I should do something, but don't now what. Also, it's like her family doesn't care at all, which really pisses me off. God bless Rhino. Amen to that. I'm reading a fabulous book called The Rise and Fall of the American Musical and he describes the heyday when pop singers sang and recorded songs from Broadway. He even pointed out that The Supremes recorded an entire Funny Girl album. He points to Judy Collins' Send In the Clowns as the virtual end of that fashion. (njc, 6969) Hi, all, Last night, Robert and I were watching Lost, when a new (U.S.) Navy recruiting commercial came on -- we were barely paying attention, even there were actors playing sailors in it, but they all had green makeup on (is that supposed to be a draw: "Join us, wear green makeup! -- It's either us, or get the lead in 'Wicked'"?), not our bag of posies if you catch my drift. Anyway, honest to god, this is how the commercial ended: The U.S. Navy. Accelerate Your Life. Well, Robert and I each took a second to mull that over, than simultaneously looked at each other and started laughing; because, as we all know, when we accelerate something, we shorten its duration, which is pretty good Truth in Advertising, if you ask me. We suggest the next step should be bolder: The U.S. Navy. Live Fast, Die Young and leave a Dignified, Uniformed Corpse. They had alot of great songs, one of my favorites is "One Way Sunday". I saw them perform in SF's Winterland, and I've played "The City" at every party I've gone to with a guitar since high school. "What Am I living for?", "Neighborhood Man", and the whole Saucilito Bay Suite they do on the purple album are some other favorites. Unfortunately, the first (grey) and the second (purple) albums -their best- are only available from Amazon as Japanese remastered import CDs-you can get both for only $89 and change! They had a great jazz/rock/unplugged sound, with Mark on nylon string guitar and vocals, and Almond switching between flute and sax. They had a wonderful piano player, too. Very moody and haunting. The singer Marc Almond has no relation to this group.
