Just got this a day ago...what an amazingly attractive (to me anyway) album! Anyone else think this is one of the best recordings of Joni's voice? I like the fact that she really "tries", too, on these. They don't have that so off the cuff "I'm sick to death of this song" quality about them at all that some singers get when the songs are no longer brand new. And that despite that she probably *was*..according to the "paint another starry night" comment. It seems clear to me though, that "FTR" stuff was new at this time. I ADORE the CBSASF on this. (altho I hate the crowd's intitial oooh and ahhhh at the start of it... wow! she's gonna sing the junkie song, she's gonna sing the junkie song...) Am not quite all the way through this yet, but find myself quite enamored. Am making this my resident "car CD" for the next while. I don't really think of these as "artistic" so much as story songs, almost theatrical. I love that side of her writing, and I don't think many people can write these stories well, stories that are not first person or confessional. I think her only competition in this arena is my other favorite songwriter - Stephen Sondheim. These stories of other peoples' lives - where Joni is an outside observer - are very different, have a different feel, than her more first-person, confessional type songs. Of course, we all interpret them our own way. My only disagreement with you is that I personally don't feel that Last Chance Lost, Blue and Moon at the Window belong in this category. I've always thought these were very personal first-person presentations from Joni, not the more "artistic" storytelling or observational songs. You've left off a couple of my favorites that I do think fall into this category - The Tea Leaf Prophecy and Harry's House. BTW, I love The Reoccurring Dream . . . I love all of the different vocals and voices. Maybe it's because I'm a marketing and media person, but I appreciate her fascination with that theme - how advertising and media and "the in crowd" effect our morals, our basic values, even when we are not aware of it. She's touched on this theme in several songs over the years. Anyway, I saw her in concert several years ago (maybe more than several) after not seeing her since those long ago woodstock days. She was light & funny & blew the entire perception I had of her as oh so serious totally away. You know Court and Spark was my first introduction to Joni, so I have never thought of her as all serious or a person without a sense of humor. Help Me, Just Like This Train, Raised on Robbery and Twisted were all humorous or had very humorous moments, so I always thought of her as having a fun side. I believe that the eagle was giving you a blessing of comfort. Birds do that. I know this for a fact because it has happened and continues to happen in my life as well. Unfortunately, my daughter Mim and I weren't in the same place (geographically) when the impossible news about my brother Dave's death arrived at our garden gate. Feeling overwhelmed and confused, Mim headed straight outside, seeking solace. With a heavy heart, she appealed to mother nature for answers. Walking and crying (you know it's the same release)...Suddenly, out of nowhere, hundreds of Canada geese were flying right above her head. She heard the whoosh whoosh of wings flapping in unison. With shivers running up and down her spine...in that moment, a rush of relief fell over her, as Mim felt Dave's presence in a big way. Suddenly, she felt calm and reassured that he was okay now. I know this is true, I've felt it. Friends took me out for my birthday to a restaurant out on the prairie. Again, hundreds of geese were soaring, and lighting like butterflies all around the building...spectacular. My friends said they had never seen anything like it, and they've lived out here for twenty years. Ah, the power of the winged ones. Comfort and joy. Birds are wise messengers. When his 38-caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a hold-up in Long Beach, California, would be robber James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again. This time it worked..... And now, the honorable mentions: 2. The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat cutting machine and, after a little hopping around, submitted a claim to his insurance company. The company suspecting negligence, sent out one of its men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine and lost a finger. The chef's claim was approved. 3. A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his Vehicle to find a woman had taken the space. Understandably, he shot her. 4. After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was supposed to be transporting from Harare to Bulawayo had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone waiting there a free ride. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't discovered for 3 days. 5. An American teenager was in the hospital recovering from serious head wounds received from an oncoming train. When asked how he received the injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit. 6. A man walked into a Louisiana Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter, and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer...$15. (If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, is a crime committed?) 7. A thief burst into a Florida bank one day wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Aiming his gun at the guard, the thief yelled, "FREEZE, MOTHER- STICKERS, THIS IS A **** UP!" For a moment, everyone was silent. Then the snickers started. The security guard completely lost it and doubled over laughing. It probably saved his life, because he'd been about to draw his gun. He couldn't have drawn and fired before the thief got him. The thief ran away and is still at large. In memory of the event, the banker later put a plaque on the wall engraved with the words, "Freeze, mother-stickers, this is a ****-up!" 8. Seems an Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinderblock through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinderblock and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinderblock bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. The liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape. 9. As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, "Yes, officer, that's her. That's the ladyI stole the purse from." 10. The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan, at 5 a.m., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away. 5-STAR STUPIDITY AWARD WINNER! 11. When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline and plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges, saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 22:53:08 +0100 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: french Jonifest I hate to bug people but a reminder is needed: Many of you have expressed an interest and said they were definitely coming to the french Jonifest. It will be extremely difficult to book those rooms for extra nights at the last minute. Reservations get filled very early in the year. Congrats on the record. You should get it up on cdbaby (where you can also post up to 8 clips of your songs as well). I think your plan is a strong one. You don't say what you are studying though. Are you headed for a back up career or a parallel career (like me -music production)? What ever it is, NEVER let your music take a back seat to it or it can be gone for ever. I know so many talented people that write and play one day and the next they "grow up" and move on. I did a tribute record to Joni called PazFest-A New Orleans Tribute To Joni Mitchell Volumes 1 and 2 http://cdbaby.com/pazfest. I recruited many of my musician friends locally and nationally (Brian Thomas and David Lahm from the list) to come to town and play. I am threatening to release the follow up Volume 3 this year. A dirge?! Oh Garret, you have wounded me deeply . . . I am at an utter loss for words. Okay, I'm over the 'utter loss for words' part now. I think 'Richard' is such a brilliant, brilliant reflection of one moment in time, one flash of clarity - a reflection of that moment when you realize you have to resign yourself to the fact that there is no perfect solution to some situations . . . I must agree with this gentleman regarding the final song on Blue. The crescendo -- Only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away; only a phase, these dark cafe days -- is it indeed. Lovely lines to croon loudly along with, the essence of transformational Joni. Want to talk about dirge, about plodding, dark downers, lets talk the namesake of "Hejira." This album hits a deep one in me, as I grew up with white sand roads and the clouds of Michelangelo on the west coast of Fla. It just thrills me that she was there when I was just a kid. (Anyone know the details of just where she fixed dinner for them and Boston Jim? Naples, Englewood, Siesta Key?) But this song I do not like, even hate, as it brings down the whole album experience with its monotony. I have cursed it many times as I must skip it and pretend to erase its existence on an otherwise perfect and profound set of poetry. Perhaps somewhat could enlighten me and remove this blight. "Pretty lies" . . . is this an original phrase of hers? I recently discovered that "I am as constant as the Northern Star" is spoken at least twice by Caesar in Shakespeare's play. I would be happy to share the entire quote and scene reference if anyone is interested. (It seems no one was much interested in comparing Goat Dance interpretations -- I don't think it's sex, I suspect it's a true cultural gig. Honestly -- no one else out there has ever tried to bust it out?) looking forward to some discussion -- Eaddy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2005 19:38:54 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: WALLY IN THE US IN FEB!!! njc/updates RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!! I got a chuckle out of reading this, Eaddy. Many people on this list see the album 'Hejira' as the apex of Joni's output and some as the greatest record ever made. From time to time I have contested this, citing what to me is a repetitiveness to several of the songs on the record and similarity in tone and tempo between most of the tracks. The song 'Hejira' itself is treated with particular reverence by many list members. I think the song 'Hejira' has some wonderful poetry in it. As far as the monotony is concerned, try thinking of riding in a car for a long space of time over a long distance. The monotony of the sounds the car makes, the repetition of the 'fine white lines' on the highway and the regularity of the utility poles, traffic coming the opposite way, even the scenery on some stretches of road. I think the song is deliberately evocative of this. And over the years I seem to hear more and more every time I play this particular cd and set out once more on the spiritual journey that Joni charts on it.
