She was the token hippie in the family and we shared a bedroom. It's 1970 and I am 11 years old. I know that sounds precocious, but I think she is sick of having to share her record player with me. And I play the same LP over and over and over and over. What is it? The Monkees? 1910 Fruitgum Company? The Osmond Five? No, it is the long playing version of the New York Mets and their '69 Miracle Season. That was my very first album and I loved it. From the opening bars of some dirge to the CRACK! of the ball on the bat; this piece of vinyl had it all. And I still think about it. She took that LP and smashed it to pieces in a sisterly fit one hot, humid summer weekend. She got in so much trouble for saying "shit," (as in: "I'm not gonna listen to this shit anymore!"), that the loss of the LP was almost worth it. That was it. I had nothing else in my record collection. I was forced to listen to Joni...Joni...Joni....Joni. At first, I didn't think it came close to the Met's theme: (Meet the Mets, Greet the Mets....), but it started to sink in, I started to hum along and soon I started to wonder along. Pat showed me how to really look at an album, see the art, notice the "Produced by David Crosby," (huh? does he play shortstop for the Yankees???). It was the tiny seed that produced a hardy flowering. It was also the last time we were close and so my fondness for all things Joni has a special poignant beginning to the whole thing. Whew! I guess that gets me off the list of suspects, then! ; ) Hi Laura! Lori ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 03:27:37 +0000 From: "Michael O'Malley" Subject: Where will Joni be on CBC's 50 Tracks? This past summer, the CBC put together a summer-long radio show where revolving panels of judges, composed of invited music critics, musicians, and other know-it-alls, put together a list of the 50 essential pop music tracks of the 20th century. An essential track was defined as a tune with an undeniably great melody and great lyrics; a great hook that was easily recognizable; a song that captured the spirit of its time, all the while being original and different enough to act as a trailblazer, setting a new standard or style. Now that's a tall order, and I think it was difficult to apply all these criteria rigourously to all the songs that finally made it to the list. However, a list did evolve, controversial as it is, and you can check it out on the show's website at http://www.cbc.ca/50tracks/essentialpopmusic.html This past summer, a new decade was covered each week. Suggestions were put forth and hotly debated. The radio audience could vote by phone and email. In fact, 10 spots on the list, as well as the final numerical order of the winning songs, were chosen entirely by listeners' suggestions and votes. At one point during the 70's segment, a Joni tune was advanced by lead singer Carol Pope, of ex Rough Trade fame. Her pick was River. A hot debate ensued, which put it in a tie position with Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side. Listeners were then asked to vote for one of the two, and over a few weeks, River was eventually bumped off by Reed's great classic. Fair enough, it easily dashes River in that context. But ouch, that hurt so bad. Joni did not make it back onto the list during the other decades. (We wont even talk about The Greatest Canadian TV show debacle!) Imagine! A 20th century best-of-pop list without Joni. Such heresy, especially on the CBC! Many listeners were upset about this, but hey, the tribe had spoken. NOW, during the next three months, CBC is redoing a Canadian version of the list, and Joni's place will surely be rightfully redeemed. No one had questioned Joni's artistic legacy and her right to be on that first list, but the votes were for the song, not the artist. And River was simply not a strong enough choice. The problem with Joni is finding that one, undeniably great song. For the pop generalist then, which of Joni's songs could truly fulfil all these criteria as an essential track and beat off contenders? I began searching for candidates from her earliest work: I Had a King - hauntingly beautiful, but not well known. The same could be said of Marcie.Cactus Tree? is that her first great pop tune? Is it an essential track? The obvious choices from Clouds are Chelsea Morning and BSN. Not favourites of mine personally. I much prefer the 2000 version of BSN. Of course, both are classics and have been covered extensively. From LOTC, Circle Game and Woodstock are classics, but perhaps a bit dirgy as sung by Joni. The CSNY version of Woodstock has a good chance to get on the list, but there are no Joni vocals! How about Ladies of the Canyon itself? How about (shudder) BYT? Is that ultimately the only song powerful enough to finally immortalise Joni on such a list ?? The problem is, it *is* a great pop song! Are we destined to be doomed by jukebox Joni !? From Blue, the obvious choice would be ACOY. What say you? What's an essential Joni track, JMDLers? I'll be following this new Canadian list closely as it evolves. Listener voting will begin next week. I'll keep you posted. Stay tuned!
