M E in S ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2005 20:05:40 -0500 From: "Anne Sandstrom" Subject: your notches... 800 people around the globe just looked in their email INBOX and screamed bloody murder LOL!!!! Welcome, Brad. (Oh, make that 801???? Except you haven't been here long enough to scream at the subject line.) Anyway, your succinct explanation: I'm not sure about "notches liberation doll", but I think it's related to the sentiment of "I used to count lovers like railroad cars" is probably the best explanation I've read yet. And I must take a moment to defend DED. No, I don't love the production. But I think the songs are as good as anything Joni has ever written. Would that I still had a voice (taking after Joni to the extreme...) so that I could record them all acoustically. Then you'd see how very "Joni" they are. Now on to list content... As for that colin fellow, well when he talks about bitches he means female dogs - really!!!! And as for Smurf van Tiel M.D., he says he's a neurosurgeon, but that's just short for neurotic sturgeon. And he's blue. You'll see...So would that make him a bluefish??? And he's no relation to John van Tiel who is really your uncle (as he is all of ours, which I guess means he's Smurf's uncle too, so maybe they are related after all...) Hell is a person, and a wonderful one at that. She lives down under, and hell is supposed to be like under everything. Make of that what you will. Bob M (there are two - the good Bob and the bad Bob - again I'll leave that one up to you to decide - but it's a lot of fun when they go at it) - so no not THAT Bob M, THAT one - needed a hobby and wanted a royal title, so he's the Covers King. As Joni said, "And you know there may be more..." Well there are. You'll meet the whole cast in time. So I'll sign off for now, as always... lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2005 20:10:52 -0500 (EST) From: "Gerald A. As I'm new here, I was just wondering how many other Aussies are on this list. As far as I know, Joni only ever performed once in Australia. I wasn't quite the fan I am now (I was also quite young then) and didn't go to her show. I believe she performed at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney. A friend who was not really a fan saw the show and gave negative reports on it. He said, "She was like a walking Vogue cover. She appeared, performed and left without answering any questions from the audience". Did anyone else catch that show or know of any other performances in Oz? Does anyone have a copy of the Australia-only release of "The World of Joni Mitchell"? Well, it's not doing TOO badly...6 covers of it so far, it trails only "Be Cool" (8) as the most covered song on WTRF (not counting 'You're So Square'). On the whole, WTRF is doing all right in the covers dept (around 25 or so), especially when you compare it to DED (1 cover of Ethiopia is it) & CMIARS (5 or 6 total). I know you're "trolling" here but I'll take the bait anyway. No, she refused to allow a 'hits' package for decades. She wasn't congratulating herself any more than James Taylor or Bob Dylan or the Cowboy Junkies were congratulating themselves when their companies released their hits packages. Joni told them "no" for a very long time because she thought it would kill off her back catalog. I'm sure she had her reasons for that but I suspect that bands are normally approached for a hits package when they stop working together (like the Eagles hits, I *think*.) From what I've seen on the JMDL, some young listeners started with Joni's 'hits' and dove head-long into her Catalog. (No surprise there, right?) The problem I have with 'misses' is that she didn't put much of herself into it. I think she said at one point that one morning she just listed the songs, one after another. At the end of the same day, she didn't see any reason to revise it so she sent it to the company. (JONI! The queen of revisions!) In addition, the concept and execution of the packaging of 'misses' isn't up to her own incredibly high standards. From the interviews lately, I think she put much more thought into "Dreamland". At the end of the "Fresh Air" interview she said she tried to be smart & creative when picking tracks & sequencing it. She said she put some thought into the variety, and made a concious effort to be fair about the amount of stuff delivered for the money. (Putting "The Jungle Line" on there shows she still has her instinct for selecting. She knows it's a killer track. Preceding it with the perfect setup, "Dreamland", show she still has her chutzpah too.) Personally, I wish we could rewind the clock and replace 'misses' with 'Dreamland'. For a catalog of more than 20 titles, she has an amazingly high batting average. Maybe no one told her. > Does anyone have a copy of the Australia-only release of "The World > of Joni Mitchell"? I have that one-I found the LP in a very hip Marin County vinyl shop about 24 years ago for $6.98 or $7.98 . (It's a Blue-LOTC era compilation if anyone's wondering).
