NJC was wondering if anyone can give me some info about spyware that has suppsedly been installed at my work. My 2 computers, 2 Macs we use for graphics, are not on the network with the PC's in the front office and use no file server. However, there is a cable box where my 2 macs get their internet access, and that is the same cable box the whole business uses. Someone told me that "spyware" to track what websites are gone to, would be likely installed at the "server" - in which case I think I'm safe - since I'm not on their server or network. And I know no one has installed anything on my computers. But *could* it be that there is some way its being monitored at the cable baox? That something is taking note of all the URL's going through the actual cable box? Anybody know? thanks I really appreciate it. I don't go to hardly any websites at work - but I do check my Yahoo email, lets just say *often*, and am wondering what the ramifications could be. thx, Em ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 2004 06:53:08 -0800 (PST) From: mags h Subject: it's coming on christmas NJC Like the familiar sound of sleigh bells ringing, I want to chime in with a few of my thoughts. There are many things I love about Christmas. On the edge of this grand season, my hands smooth the fabric, in preparation for words, thoughts, 8 stitches to the inch, golden threads, shimmer against the fabric of a midnight blue prairie skye. Keeping watch over the darkest night of the year. Blessed Winter soltice. Sit down at my table. Take a deep breath with me as I raise a sculpting tool to this daunting, yet precious stone called Christmas, for this is what I see at its crystal ball center. There is a spirit inside, a warmth, a light. Hope. Hope for a better future, sweet relief from the past. Littlegirlgiddyness. Shimmering, twists of silver star garland wrapped round and round the white mini lights which adorn the doorway in my kitchen, my very own festival of lights. Sparkling, like diamonds, pinlightstars dance on my glorious prairie landscape, painted white, snow angels. A time, a place, a season filled with hope for the possibility of a new dawn, gently breaking. star light, star bright, may this gentle tiding of comfort and joy take you into that deep dark winter night, wrap snug around you with all the love you deserve. with white light thoughts and prayers as i listen to the snow falling on cedars. Must have spend more than #120 in all ;0( The Intellitouch tuner is ingenious and will work without a lead of course, so you don't need a pick-up. But I found that it sometimes has difficulty working out what note I'm playing, and can be a little slow. Also, mine started falling apart after about a year. The hinge broke, and the cover for the battery space. It's held together with duck tape now! I bought a Westfield tuner as a possible replacement. It has a microphone in it, as well as a jack socket for a guitar lead. It was quick and reliable, but I found that when I plug in via the jack, it doesn't switch the microphone off. What this means is that in noisy situations it gets confused, and so is useles on stage! I now have a Boss TU-2 which is the best I've found so far. You have to plug in to use it, so you need a pick-up on your instrument. It's pretty quick and reliable in finding the note you're playing, and easy to use in low light. You plug into the tuner and then plug the output of the tuner into your amp. or PA. It mutes the output when you switch it on, so there's no annoying tuning twanging going to the audience. The only downside is that it gets through batteries fairly quickly, and when the battery is getting low, it degrades the sound of the guitar. But once you realise that, you just keep a spare battery with you at all times - no problem. The Boss is by far the most expensive option, but it's by far the most usefull and reliable on stage. If you're just playing at home, the Intellitouch is pretty good - but delicate. Treat it with care! Happy Christmas Mags, and happy playing! You'd probably have to look at pics of her playing to see what guitar she was playing but a good quality luthier would know just what you need for constant tuning and re-tuning. I know I took my Sigma Martin (Korean assembled Martin bodies) to a luthier (I love using that word, can you tell? He never made me a lute though...) and he adjusted the neck and the top fret (the one just before it seperates into the tuning holes) to lower the action. It has made it much easier to play. Maybe they should start producing guitar necks that are calibrated to withstand the sort of constant changes in pressure that re-tuning gives. I don't think they are any less prone to neck problems than other guitars-she has talked about how retuning causes destabilization of the neck. Martins are unique in that the truss rod inside the neck is not adjustable. I think any time you loosen the strings drastically for a Joni tuning, the neck will take awhile to adjust itself to the decreased tension, since guitars are made to accept the tension of a "regular" tuning. Also, on the very slack tunings, you may get more string buzz, since the untensed neck is now bowing backward. I would return the guitar to standard tuning after visiting Joniland. Once she could afford it, Joni traveled with a gaggle of guitars set up for the various tunings. All were Martins, I think. I don't know if other brands might be more suitable for frequent retuning. You could always go with the VG-8 (??), the digital setup Joni used on her last few albums. The strings are not tuned, you punch a footswitch and the tuning changes electronically. I think any decent guitar would work with Joni tunings, as I said, I would just return it to standard afterward. It has held up well-my daughter broke the battery door, I wrote to the company and they sent me a new one without charge. Attention liberal shoppers: Next year, screw those GOP-loving companies, and start buying blue By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist Do you care much that greasy ol' Pizza Hut gave tens of thousands in PAC money to the GOP last year? Do you think maybe it should? Matter, that is? This is what happened: there was this list, see, a long and rather surprising list of major consumer companies in America, and it detailed just how much money each company forked over to the respective political parties last year in political action committee (PAC) donations. Stop yawning. It gets better. And the list was a bit revelatory and interesting, as such lists are often wont to be, and the companies' fiscal behavior might even surprise you a little, might even take you aback and make you reconsider your consumerist options, especially the part about how Amazon.com gave 61 percent of its donations to the GOP and except maybe for the part about how Coors Brewing gave almost every penny of its donations to Republicans in a concerted effort to, presumably, stop them icky Colorado gays from getting married and keep women in their place all while furthering the cause of skanky undrinkable pisswater beer made for red-blooded Americans who lack taste buds and hope ....
