Heck, I have in motion a vague plan to start my own publishing company so maybe I'd publish it myself. And what better place to begin than with the JMDL? If there are theologians in the house (and I think there may be), you don't have to write anything yet, this e-mail is just to guage interest and potential. I'd eventually cast the net wider if/when I get more serious about this. any and all feedback on this idea is welcome. While I'm in the Christian tradition, I would certainly entertain theological perspectives other than my own. I do think she has a recurring concern for the underdog, critiques for the rich and powerful, and an understanding of how power attracts and corrupts--all being staples in liberation theology. Admittedly, it's a very upper middle class take on it and almost completely undermined by "The Windfall" (perhaps my least favorite Joni song for this very reason), but I do hear it in her work. Joni Mitchell read in light of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is interesting indeed. (And I'll pause a moment to say Bonhoeffer is sometimes referenced as influential to the liberation theologians :) He's never come to mind when listening to Joni, but I would definitely love to see this idea expanded and fleshed out. She doesn't always, but as in your reference, she often connects her concern for the earth with some "Larger" concern, that is, God or spiritual matters. And this reminds me of one those undermining phrases of hers, this one from "Song for Sharon," where Mama and Betsy are suggesting places to put Joni's time and energy (put some time into ecology) and all Joni wants is to find another lover. But this is also part of what makes Joni interesting to me theologically: the tensions and contradictions in her convictions. It's so very beautifully human. Maybe this idea won't go any farther than this few ramblings, but everytime I stock a copy of "Harry Potter and Philosophy" on the shelf (I currently work at a Barnes and Noble) I automatically drift over to my unwritten, un-outlined essay on Joni and Theology. Last night was one of those nights. Perhaps it will pass, perhaps I'll finally get around to it. I was baby-sitting at The Reeds house, and we watched part of it before I had to put them to bed. Then I watched the rest of it. My sister bought the LP and we wore it out. (She's a major Nilsson freak, then & now) It actually was hard to find on CD for awhile, but now it's in full circulation and easy to find. Great memories. Dustin Hoffman did the movie voice-over, but there was a record of it and it was a different voice. Could've been Ringo, but I don't remember. Why would they use a different voice from the movie to the record? Sorry, I think there may have been two records, one just with the music and another possibly a book-with-tape that came out later that had the songs and the narrative. As for Rufus & Donovan, I'll take your word for it. I haven't been able to stomach Rufus' stuff enough to get a handle on him, but I've tried because Jerry & Richard & so many folks seem to dig him. The only RW track I liked was his cover of 'Across The Universe' on the I Am Sam soundtrack, and I wonder how much of that was just due to the fact that it's such a damn fine tune. IMO the original is still the best. Naked..contains Dont Let Me Down, plus a too-short extra disc (17m?) of "fly on the wall" conversation from the Let It Be sessions. The new one was completely remixed from the original 8 tracks, so, sonically, everything sounds better, although the mix is different, and in some cases, off the mark. Still probably the best of the rehashed fabs...way better than the Yellow Sub "songtrack" remix CD.
