My most sincere thanks to all of you for such a warm welcome here. Not sure 
what I expected, but I know I didn't expect to hear from so many of you, so 
soon after my post. In the 12 or so hours since I posted, I have received many 
e-mails from all over, and each one was very positive and supportive. I hope 
there will be times when I can show such support to others here.
    There has always been music in my life, and always will. I don't just 
listen to music, I feel it. It moves me. I hear songs and I am instantly brought 
to where I was at the time I heard the song. I may not be as knowledgeable as 
many of you here when it comes to Joni, but I doubt anyone here has more 
respect for her than I. She is a TRUE and pure artist. Her words amaze me, and they 
never fail to move me. Her painting does the same. She does what she does 
with honesty. "A helicopter lands on the Pan Am roof, like a dragonfly on a 
tomb." That line alone finds its way into my head at least once a day, and when I 
see a helicopter/dragonfly I smile in spite of myself.

Well, OK, that's probably not exactly true. Most of the world would just 
respond "Oh sweetheart, you shouldn't have"...and be totally sincere. 
Anyway, time to the flip the calendar page over for the LAST time in 2004 (I 
still can't get over that) and unveil a new collection of Joni covers in the 
greatest compilation series in Rock & Roll history (according to me).

And as usual, it is a cornucopia of goodies and not-so-goodies. But you know 
they all meant well. And a special thanks to the little JMDL elves that helped 
Santa-Bob stuff all these tracks in his bag:

Lieve Reckers (I told you we'd get to it, Lieve)
Monica Cardinale (always a thanks to Monica!)
Emiliano (missing in action and please report for duty - how can have a 
wonderful time without YOU?)

And now here's the scoop, Betty Boop:

1. Terri Lyne Carrington - Ethiopia: Lots of you have heard this one by now 
as it was one of my Sweet 16 for this year. The first DED cover is a total 
winner and hopefully will be the first of many.
2. Julian Davies - The Circle Game: Julian is listed in the JMDL members 
index, but never responded to my email...oh well, this is a very pretty and tender 
version of this song. If you're out there Julian, thanks for recording it.
3. Ken Dodd - Both Sides Now: Known as "Britain's undisputed king of comedy", 
and star of the British stage, Ken also had a second career as a balladeer, 
and here's his take on the franchise. 
4. Avenue - Big Yellow Taxi: Nothing is known about them...but for some 
reason, instead of singing "they paved paradise" she sings "the pink 
paradise"...it's as if Ashara, the Mondequeen herself, had recorded it!
5. Sweet Harmony - Woodstock: This is a 2004 release out of Canada, a cover 
of the Matthews Southern Comfort arrangement. It was a special release for a 
fundraiser for a children's charity. For more information see:

6. Hirotaka Izumi - Both Sides Now: Lovely instrumental from Japan.
7. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - God Must Be A Boogie Man 
8. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: This 
amazing guitar/jazz vocal duo has been highlighted on the last couple of 
volumes as well. They complete their appearance by turning in 2 great versions of 
Mingus tracks, and as always Fabio's acoustic guitar is right on the money.
9. Chet Lam - A Case Of You: From Hong Kong, and inspired by Diana Krall's 
version, a very nice take on it too.
10. Symphonia Canada - Both Sides Now: Symphonic music from Canada - but did 
I REALLY need to say that?
11. Pinguin Moschner, Maggie Nichols, Joe Sachse - Blue: Pinguin is an 
avant-garde Jazz tuba player, Joe plays synths and percussion, so they create a bit 
of a cacophonous background while Maggie sings pretty much a straight melodic 
line over the white noise. Pretty weird!
12. The Hit Crew - Big Yellow Taxi: Dios Mio! I thought we were done with 
these Counting Crows-BYT cover remakes, but I was wrong. Don't know why it 
exists, but it does so here it is.
13. Nancy Toms - You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio: The instrumental track sounds a 
little programmed, and Nancy's oh-ver-lee concerned with may-king shoo-wer 
that she pro-noun-ces eh-ver-ee syllable just so. Loosen up, Nance, willya?
14. The US Army Chamber Orchestra - Both Sides Now: More symphonic BSN music, 
and very well done - I salute you, fellas. Now put down those instruments and 
get your asses to Fallujah.
15. Lisa Hannigan - Willy: An unreleased live recording, Lisa recorded and 
toured with Damien Rice and is obviously a Joni fan. Special thanks to Emiliano 
for turning up this rarity.
16. Eva Cassidy - Woodstock: Another rare one, a live version of Eva doing 
Woodstock, which she thankfully recorded in the studio as well - this is very 
similar to that studio version, but is still always a pleasure to hear her, and 
bittersweet too knowing that her sweet voice was silenced all too soon.
17. The Ohio Singers - The Circle Game: Not to be confused with The Ohio 
Express (Yummy Yummy Yummy) or The Ohio Players (Fire, Love Rollercoaster), these 
cats are most likely a group formed to cover the hits of the day. Not bad but 
nothing to get too excited about.
18. The Generation Gap - Both Sides Now: While you're in that unexcited 
state, let's spin this leftover thanksgiving turkey...The GG is actually a quartet 
spun off of the Naramata Choir in Canada:

As you can see from the picture, they are a pretty square bunch and this 
track is as square as it gets. Blame Canada.
19. Esther - Chelsea Morning: Ummm, they need a little more rehearsing. 
Further proof that putting your music on the internet for downloading can be a 
dangerous thing. Not for the squeamish.
20. The Vineyard Sound - A Case Of You: The Official Acapella group of 
Martha's Vineyard. This was from an early live recording so the quality suffers a 
bit but these guys can sing, no doubt about that.  Listen for yourself at:

21. Justin Young - Big Yellow Taxi/Ka Manu: I included this one as a 
hidden/bonus track because he starts off with about 25 seconds of BYT then immediately 
segues into 3+ minutes of the Hawaiian song. He's got a nice voice - makes me 
wish he'd stuck with the Joni.

And so it goes...21 tracks of Joni-inspired goodness! As always, let me know

far as smoking pot?   I ain't never smoke it and I ain't intendin to start

daydreamin..but I wasn[t smokin funny stuff.

LOL! Bree it's a cartoon - very silly. But fun, as I recall. And no
more hardcore than some of the raunchier R. Crumb comix. (some of which
*are* pretty hardcore/taboo really)
I know lots of folks never smoked pot or did any substances in the 70's
and 80's. But I have to say, everyone I know *did*. No sh_t.
Hanging with the wrong crowd I guess.

But Lama,

This is, in fact, good news. That means people stick to their Joni albums and do not trade them. (take out the items that folks sold to second hand stores for lack of money, which is sad, but understandable, and you'd see that those kind of stores are basicly filled with stuff that folks lost interest in or wanted to get rid of or even worse - were willing to give up rare items for nothing but greed). 

I know a music store in our town (not a used stuff store) where you can find all the Joni you've ever dreamed of - and it's sitting there for more than a decade like those dirty cups and spoons cause nobody wants to but it! Now THAT'S bad. Every now and then i visit that store, and it's still there. The owner of that store is changing the price tags that's glued to the covers once a month or so to lower and cheaper - and still it's there. So one day i just had to ask him "Why do'nt you simply send it all back to the main-store (cause i knew he could do that and get other artists albums in return), Surely by now you've understood that no one's going to buy it?" And he said "Never. I don't care if it'll never be sold. It's Joni Mitchell".

Hi Bree,

As Em already stated, "Fritz the Cat" is very mild by today's standard.
I recall at the time people (who probably hadn't seen the movie) referred to
it as X.
But it's really a funny cartoon about this era, with great music (Billy
Holiday, etc).

Gang,

Haven't posted for quite some time.  The pot/Joni/addiction/health issue
was an eye-opener.  I'm 49 and started smoking pot when I was 14. 
Personally, I'm an advocate for the legalization of cannabis for several
reasons...Before I get into that, I do know from experience that
marijuana is not for everyone.  Some people have allergies or negative
reactions to it as with thousands of plants, asprin, anti-biotics, cats,
dust, etc.

I've been in rehab for nearly 10 years due to a psychological addiction
to crystal meth.  I have continued to smoke weed, as well as volunteering
at the Cannabis Co-op in Oakland, CA and was employed by a dispensary
also located in 'Oaksterdam'.  The volunteer job was helping patients
aquire state issued cards that allowed them to purchase cannabis at
county and state approved dispensaries.  The great good that marijuana
has provided and is providing for tens of thousands of people with MS,
cancer, HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy treatments, Tourette's Syndrome, pain,
depression and and aid in providing relief to heroin, coke and speed
addicts.  In many cases the use of pot for folks trying to get off the
big blood drugs is invaluable....myself included.  A wicked bad craving
(which can be pretty frightening) is relieved by as little as one or two
hits of clean-grown weed. 

People say that smoking pot leads to stronger and more dangerous drugs. 
My OPINION on this is that because it is illegal, one can find other
illegal items (drugs, guns, etc.).  My drug use was never because I
smoked pot, per se....when one thing is illegal and someone is selling
it, it's a black market and other illegal items are just there. 

I think if pot was legal (plow the tobacco fields under!!) heavier drug
use would diminish...If our lovely government slapped a tax on it, we
could probably pay off our stupid national debt in a couple of years. 
I've yet to talk to a DOCTOR who says pot is a narcotic.  I believe the
Supreme Court (I thought they were judges, not MDs) pronounced it a
narcotic back in the 20's or 30's.

If there are people who are PHYSICALLY addicted to pot, I'd like to meet
them.  I won't argue that is is psychologically addictive.  I would also
like to know who has died AS A DIRECT RESULT OF POT USE.  That said, why
the hell are alcohol and tobacco so easy to get at almost anyplace? 
Physically highly addictive.....

Since Joni is so wonderful in any state of mind I can only say that
smoking pot certainly has enhanced the experience....LOTC, STAS,
DJRD...yes!!!! especially the title song, Hejira, WTRF and NRH are the
great ones with a little puff or two.

As a pianist of 42 years,  there's NOTHING like hitting the stride while
playing with an assist from the Green Goddess.  Now THAT is bliss.  The
music pours out of my fingers.

For those of you champing at the bit, this post is not meant to be
argumentative or preachy....just my experience and opinion...

One more thing...after plowing under the tobacco fields, why not grow
industrial hemp (just about impossible to get anything besides a
screaming headache) It can be used in 100's of beneficial ways.  You can
make practically anything from it.  I mean, come on.

    This is ackward....I have been a member of this list for many years now;
some of you may remember me....I do not post much at all;  just from time to
time over the years...

Well, I am scared;  very very scared....and I don't know where to turn...

My girlfriend whom I love very much left me on Thanksgiving day, and I have
been a wreck since...I am a very strong man, but am feeling very much alone
and frigtened....I keep having panick attacks (which I am prone to, but have
not had in awhile), and can feel a sense of overwhelming depression creeping
in...I do not want this...I really do not want to feel this way anymore...
I am not feeling suicidal per se, but I would be lying if I said these
thoughts haven't transversed my mind, albeit fleetingly...I do not want to
hurt myself, I love life too much and I have too much to offer...I am just
very very scared....I'm sorry to be reaching out this way;  it makes me feel
weak and/or desperate, and I do not think of myself like this...I feel like
I should be able to just pick myself up and continue;  not deny my feelings,
but just be strong and carry-on...I am having some difficulty in this...

This was going to be the first Holiday Season I was going to spend with a
'Someone Special' in my life in many years, and now here I am alone...This
pain is so friggin' much....I know G-d must have something in mind;  I know
there has to be a higher reason and that there this all will work out...At
least I am trying to maintain that belief;  it is hard...

I do not want to 'toot my own horn', and even saying this feels odd;  but I
am a good man...I really am...Not for nothing, but I really did not do
anything to break-up this relationship....I was always there for her, always
aware of and catered to her needs, a good loving, sensitive, passionate,
honest, commited, strong and sweet man....Is this the 'good guy'
syndrome...?  I really do not understand...

I'm sorry if I interupted the flow here, or if I sound like I am
whining...This is not my intention, or where I am coming from....I feel like
I desperately need people right now, and I am scared...I figured I would try
putting myself out there to the list...You all have seemed like lovely
people over the years...

Dear Lance - your feelings are awful but they are just feelings and you 
don't have to act on them. What you must do is get your support system 
up and running. If you haven't got one, then get one. You can always use 
crisis phone lines. This is very important. Depression and emotional 
pain screws up your thinking so you need others to help you thru this.

I understand you feeling ashamed for feeling as you do, really I do. 
That too is part of the depression. Ther eis no shame in suffering. 
Would you be suffering if you caould change it? No of course not. So try 
to think better of yourself.

You know many many people, if not all, suffer these sort of feelings but 
we have been taught to be shamed of them and therefore don't admit to 
them. It takes courage to admit them to yourself and to others. You are 
not alone. This pain will ease but you msut put the work in. Don't let 
it swamp you. Reach out now to your friends or a help line. You have the 
courage and desire as you have demonstrated by reaching out to us.

I have faith that you can get through this.

Lance, you're not interrupting anything and you're not
whining. (All of a sudden the words "Don't interrupt
the sorrow" went through my brain. Hmm. Wonder why.)

You certainly wouldn't be the first one to sing your
sorrow here on the jmdl and no wonder. You get a lot
of advice here, some good, some that seems like it
might be bad, but is really just another perspective,
and you can take it or leave it, but it's always
really helpful to me, certainly, to hear others'
points of view.

There are a lot of good people here, and you are one.
Your girlfriend certainly didn't leave you because
you're not a good person. I have no idea why she did,
and maybe you don't either, and maybe she doesn't
really know either. But... sometimes shit just
happens. Some people say that everything happens for a
reason, but... that's just another way people have to
try to come to grips with some kind of sorrow or loss
and it means we're adaptable and we can deal with
things no matter how long it might take (or seem to
take).

Being left by your loved one, especially if you
weren't expecting it, is a traumatic frigging
experience, so it's normal that you are going through
a lot of weird emotions over it. If you have a
tendency to panic attacks, you recognize when this is
happening and that's a plus. You probably know of ways
of dealing with this and if that happens to include
talking to your doctor, or a counsellor, or a
psychologist/psychiatrist or any kind of shrink,
that's good too and there's nothing wrong with that.
Many of us have been there for all kinds of reasons.

Most of all, talk to someone about it, even if it's
only this motley crew here on the list. A lot of
people have been through similar experiences and I'm
sure it's hard to believe right now, but there is a
tomorrow and things will get better, but for now, it's
OK to take care of yourself and to cry about it.

that happened to me once - and a deathlike heavy sadness falls over. I
think it's just important to acknowledge that something massive has
indeed happened. Just because the wounds are not visible doesn't mean
you can in any way pretend they don't exist.
Baby yourself as if you were bleeding profusely. Nurse yourself. Yes,
feel sorry for yourself - and know that you have some grieving to do.
Its grieving just as surely as sadness over a death is grieving.
Anyway, thats all...very much hoping your spirit feels bouyed soon.

Like my and Smurf's favorite movie, "Midnight Cowboy" - it was originally 
rated X, I have the original movie poster hanging on my wall to prove it.
I remember too that shortly thereafter a sexploitation flick called "Midnight 
Plowboy" came out (a double feature at the drive-in with "Tobacco Rudy"). 
That one most likely deserved its X-rating.

Speaking of R. Crumb, if you enjoy a good documentary, "Crumb" is fascinating.

I have real mixed feeling about drug legalization, but all the data that's 
out there seems to support it. One of the neat things about this crowd is its 
ability to open my eyes and my mind to other sides of an issue.
Besides, like you say, we could definitely use the tax revenue!

The worst breakup I ever had - I got home from a 4-hour road trip after we 
split - I played Hejira a couple of times and just cried like a baby; very 
cathartic.

Lance, thanks for baring your soul and even more so knowing that you could do 
it & get the support you need. Joni certainly did it in a public forum with 
her music, maybe that's why this is such an appropriate place for it. Anyway, 
don't beat yourself up or think that you're not a good guy - you know that you 
are. Things will work out fine, but like Colin says you should take a couple 
of steps yourself to get moving in the right direction. Since you mentioned 
God, I used to tell my students that in the verse that says:

"Ask and it shall be given;
Knock and the door shall be opened;
Seek and you shall find"

It always struck me that each statement starts with US taking the first 
action (Ask/Knock/Seek), not waiting to see what was going to happen or expecting 
that things will work out by themselves. Whether one believes in God or not, I 
think this is good advice.

Anyway, please keep us updated - and know that you have a couple of hundred 
folks around the world sending good thoughts your way.

This is Lance....The outpouring of Love, kindness, support, sharing, and
words of wisdom that I have received is overwhelming;  though not in a bad
way...

I have directly responding to many of you that wrote me (and I hope to
continue to do so);  but I wanted to send a message to the entire list
thanking you with all my heart...

I took a chance with my message...One which I was tentative about, and felt
very vunerable about;  but I guess my spirit knew that this list would
receive me with loving arms...You have.

I do have more I would like to say;  but right now I just want to say...

I am trying to let myself 'mourn' and hurt, without being overwhelmed, and
that is not easy for me....I am also trying to keep my faith that things
will be good again, and that I can find love again;  or that it will find
me....Again, not easy for me...But I am trying...With all the prayers and
love that have been sent my way today from you all, it does make it that
much easier though, and believable.

Yes, there is a difference between addictive behaivor and addictive
substances. Truly addictive substances (tobacco, alcohol, heroin, speed)
have physical withdrawl symptoms, whereas even a major weed
toker can quit cold with little discomfort.
And while there have no doubt been people who have had problems
with marajuana, my observation is that many more lives have been
wrecked, and families torn up, and health ruined by alcohol, meth,
and coke, than by pot. In fact, people who smoke only pot and no
booze or drugs have pretty stable lives as a rule. It's a fairly benign
drug, compared to any other intoxicant.
Addictive behavior can ruin your life, too, whether it's gambling, sex,
volunteerism, or hugging the bong.

This is an interesting thread.  I don't have much experience of any illegal
substances, apart from a few disjointed (pun definitely intended) encounters
with marijuana in my ill-spent youth.  It never did much for me, anyway....

But I do have some opinions (now there's a shock)!  From what I've seen/read
it's the illegality of these drugs that causes many of the problems as well.
Because they're illegal, they tend to be expensive, which means many users
turn to crime (theft, prostitution, etc.) to pay for them.  And in the case
of prostitution I've heard many former addicts talk about the Catch-22 of
the situation - they needed the prostitution to pay for the drugs, but
needed the drugs to cope with the prostitution.  A vicious cycle.

I saw a documentary some years ago about heroin addicts in Britain being
prescribed the drug by their doctors (through a government scheme) in order
to keep them in a "safe" lifestyle.  One woman was holding down a
secretarial job and raising her kids while still using.  I'm not suggesting
this as a solution, but it obviously worked in some cases.  From memory the
"dosage" was gradually lowered (in very small steps) to wean them off
entirely.

I also have a cousin who was a specialist nurse in a psychiatric hospital,
along with her husband.  They were totally in support of legalising
marijuana for medical use, as they could see the positive benefits it could
bring in that environment.  Again, it wouldn't be suitable for all patients,
but they certainly saw what it could do with some.

Personally, I think tobacco is one of the most addictive substances on the
planet (and I definitely speak from personal experience)!  I've heard of
staff in prisons saying they could remove every trace of illegal drugs from
a prison with no major difficulty, but any attempt to remove tobacco would
results in violent riots.

NZ is going more smoke-free on December 10th, after which time all clubs,
bars and restaurants have to be completely smoke-free - with major fines for
patrons and staff who ignore the rules.  It's amazing how many bars have
suddenly renovated to include large outdoor areas ;o)!
