I'm surprised that anyone could spend ONLY 20 minutes (or 45 with questions) on that song, so more power to ya for being concise. The more I think about it, the more I realize just how fecking brilliant that woman is, lyrically, musically and every way else. I am sticking my tongue out and going pffft in a westerly direction, since my brother lives in Alberta and always sneered at me for being a fan of Joni. That was over 30 years ago, but I feel SO vindicated. This morning I was woken up by the clock radio, tuned to CBC and, as I was coming to, the announcer was talking about the difficulties of living under a curse, and how that curse becomes the focus of your life, such that, if/when the curse is lifted, you've lost whatever legendary qualities that curse once gave you. (Or at least, those are my words trying to describe what he was talking about.) He talked about the Boston Red Sox winning and how, having had the curse of not having won for so many years finally lifted, fans no longer have that legendary curse to talk about, complain about, or whatever. What do they do next? The announcer went from there to Brahms and how Brahms lived for something like 25 years in the shadow of Beethoven, under a sort of curse or writer's block that meant he could *never* finish a symphony. But after 25 years, he finally wrote one symphony, but he didn't stop there. He then wrote another, and another, and another. Beethoven is a tough act to follow that he might have stopped after one and been satisfied. That's how I feel about Joni - she is so gifted in both her words and her music that just about everyone else pales by comparison. I can think of some modern composers, songwriters, what you will, that may be able to write great music, but whose lyrics just don't measure up; others who write wonderful lyrics, but whose music is pretty standard stuff. Joni can do BOTH and make it look easy, but all of us know, it couldn't possibly be as easy as she makes it look. So many songwriters of today mention Joni as an influence. How many others are there that just don't even try, because they fear never being able to measure up? Thanks for stepping out of the shadows - Michael did say that there was at least one person who participated in the symposium that belongs to the jmdl, so it's great to know who the mystery man is! ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 2004 22:33:56 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: The "world" as we know it NJC Not from my side of the pond ( or at least half of me) Anudda Mike > Catherine writes: > > >> Certainly in MY lifetime, >> and, as Smurf would be sure to remind you, that's a >> LOOOOONNNG time. >> > > Now, Catherine, you know I just point out your age as a public service for > newcomers so that everyone here will clearly see that we actually do have > Jonifans of all ages aboard the good ship JMDL. I felt like I was there. Wish I could have been at least for your company and the topics would have been fun for me as well with or without Joni. But oh what a treat for you. The polls may be close, but the feeling here is unprecedented. People are pouring in from all over the country to work the phones and walk the streets. All the Democrats say the pollsters are way off, missing the wave of new voters that will flood the polls on Tuesday. I'm not so sure, but I have to say I've never felt anything like this in America before. < how exciting! I keep hearing stuff like this from Ohioans! Thanks mitch & I agree, I think there is a huge wave of new voters that could landslide this election as long as the votes are counted... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2004 21:28:10 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: TLTISR It sounds wonderful!
