Meja - The Circle Game: A very recent recording by dance-pop ex-Legacy of Sound star Meja from Sweden. Gives it a nice samba-esque touch. 11. Zachary Scot Johnson - A Case Of You: One of our own! Zachary is a JMDL'er, and this comes from his CD released this year, Moment of Clarity. He sings and plays the piano, and does both with flair & beauty. Newdelphia Sax Quartet - Song For Sharon: Well, if I didn't tell you anything about this one, you'd probably figure it out anyway. A Saxophone Quartet from Philly, this instrumental is another 2004 release. 13. Lonnie Donegan - Both Sides Now: Like the late great John Peel, I expect the Brits to be more familiar with Skiffle pioneer Donegan. His claim to fame was a skiffle recording of "Rock Island Line", and also that he inspired a certain John Lennon to pick up a guitar in the 50's. His take on BSN is not as inspirational but still is a bit spirited. 14. Diana Krall - Black Crow: What more can be said about this one? Not just my favorite Joni cover of the year, but one of my favorite recordings of the year, period. Keep 'em coming, Diana. 15. Dawson - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Pianist-Composer Mike Dawson is based in Texas, and with his band New Rage offers up a fine sax-infused instrumental take on the Mingus classic. 16. The Whims - Raised On Robbery: The Whims are from Wheaton College in Norton, MA. This is an early recording, from the late 70's. Almost sounds like the Andrews Sisters. 17. Roger Saint-Denis & Dan Gibson - Both Sides Now: Joni covers in the Rain Forest! This 8-minute plus recording features a babbling brook, birds chirping, waterfalls, and other nature sounds behind an acoustic guitar & synthesizer. While it's very pretty & all that, all those rushing water noises makes me have to tinkle. 18. Frank Haunschild/Norbert Gottschalk - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: From Germany comes this guitar/bass/vocal combo, complete with lots of walking bass and scat. The guy's voice reminds me of Steve Miller (The Joker, Jet Airliner, Living In The USA, etc) 19. Goshima Yoshiko - Big Yellow Taxi: And our trip around the world ends in Japan with this recent cover of BYT, some nice acoustic work. Leave me the birds and the bees, Preeeeze! I want her to do whatever makes her happy in her life right now. I want her to enjoy her grandchildren and enter into that "rest" I feel she deserves. I am now up to 20 people who are interested in this idea. What worries me is the ones I am NOT hearing from at all. Anyone who has participated in other gatherings I would appreciate your thoughts and comments on this idea/plan so that we can gauge interest as well as disinterest. If you would not consider this at all we want to hear from you too. There were many other ideas floating around and those could be developed in lieu of a cruise. Lieve this ship is so big I am sure that you will not feel big movement at all. They have stabilizers on the boat as well which makes cruising (by queasy folk) much more enjoyable. That's not the same thing as greed, though. I originally thought that this epidemic of compilations she's dumped in the marketplace was a result of greed, but that really doesn't make any sense - she lives extremely comfortably to be sure, and it could be that these projects actually COST her $$. I think she just feels like those 80's/90's works weren't properly marketed. I would argue that they weren't properly produced (DED, CMIARS, and TTT that is, not the others) and suffer from filler, but that's a whole nuther thang. I was one of the speakers at the Joni Symposium. I got to meet her, and she really blew me away - - also had a chance to give her my dissertation, which is about her, and to have her sign a copy for me. Very thrilling, and thanks to Michael for a good summary of the day's events. I wanted to respond to the question of the relevance of an analytic approach to Joni's music. I am actually a performer and a composer, and yes, more recently, a scholar. For me it does a disservice to Joni's art to simply dismiss the technical components of her work as irrelevant, or secondary to the emotional or poetic content. These things all go hand in hand. A good music theorist is drawn to a work he or she loves, and sets about trying to come to terms with its magic. This involves considerations of context, poetic text, a whole bunch of "intangibles," and yes, specific consideration of the music's technical construction. It's true, theorists (and I generally don't consider myself a "theorist") can lose the forest for the trees, but a good analysis avoids doing just that. Joni is a strikingly innovative and original composer, and for a daylong symposium on her accomplishment to gloss over the nuts and bolts of some of her music making would seem to me to be a shame. The Monteal Gazette article poked fun of me for devoting a 45 minute discussion to a single song ("The Last Time I Saw Richard") and claiming not to have time to address the intro. (Actually it was a 20 minute talk, w/ 25 minutes of questions). I ask you this: is it really so inconceivalbe that there should be 20, or even 45 minutes worth of things to say about "The Last Time I Saw Richard"? Anyway, I hope I don't sound bitter or embattled or anything. I'm definitely not.
