Bob, I was literally at the foot of the stage...in my new found place of phoenix rising, I walked up to two people sitting at a table in front of the stage and asked if I could jo in them. And it worked! I was up close and personal, sat right in front of Marc Jordan. He's a great singer, songwriter, and blended beautifully into the 'band'. I met him afterward, and as I said, he's a sweetie, a tender, gentle man. The stories, the laughter woven into a tapestry of muscial brilliance an evening I won't soon forget. There is nothing on this earth as wonderful as seeing/hearing/feeling live music. If you want to feel the Canadian landscape, do find this CD on line and enjoy. Four acoustic guitars, a grand piano...I had NO idea that Murray McLachlan, affectionately known in the group as 'Murr', played piano. At least Ive never heard him. Running out of superlatives...you get the picture hopefully. Ian Thomas, who wrote and performed a song that America made famous, also played mando and of course I thought of Les Irvin (hi Les). Ian is a very funny man as well as musically gifted. Murray McLachlan is an adored Canadian icon...he had a very scary story about a serious illness about five years ago, what was meant to be a 'standard procedure' turned into a near nightmare. Glad he's okay!! He looks fabulous and sings/performs with humour and finesse. He's a strong supporter of the Canadian music scene, and has been instrumental in keeping the wheels turning. Ive never heard of Cindy Church...what a wonderful surprise....fantastic singer/songwriter/performer.. Her voice blends beautifully and stands out at the same time, if that makes sense. The group is so funny too. Murray McLachlan turned to Marc and said he was looking more and more like Margaret Atwood; the crowd roared with laughter. Ms Atwood is another Canadian icon on the literary landscape of this grand country of ours. bubbling over....Mags.... np: little lambs, marc jordan ...gorgeous harmonies in the group.... As for being NJC...not so! Joni appeared on Peel's "Top Gear" show back in 1968 (on my birthday, no less) and performed Night In The City & Cactus Tree with The John Cameron Orchestra behind her. Great stuff. I say impressively because I didn't expect JP's huge contribution to British music to be appreciated in the US, although it seems he cut his broadcasting teeth in America and this contributed to his getting his first break in British broadcasting. He died from a heart attack while in Peru and I would surmise that the altitude and his diabetes were contributing factors but what a great way to go after what he freely admitted was a very happy and fulfilled life doing what he loved doing ie broadcasting the music he loved, while enjoying a happy family life. In order to find a Joni link, I've just retrieved a vinyl copy of the June Tabor Peel Sessions which includes her recording of "The Fiddle and the Drum" which was released in 1986. On the front is a list of artists and groups who have recorded sessions for John Peel at Radio One. It's a huge list and the writing, which fills an LP cover, is tiny and may of the names I have never heard of. However it includes, among the better known, Undertones, Housemartins, Mark Almond, Atomic Rooster, Gary Numan, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Syd Barrett, Jeff Beck, Madness, Primal Scream, Cocteau Twins, T.Rex, Elvis Costello, Jimi Hendrix, Maddie Prior, Martin Carthy, Donovan, Tim Buckley, Incredible String Band, Roxy Music, John Cale, Country Joe MacDonald, Elton John, Fairport, Sandy Denny and, of course, David Bowie, amongst hundreds of others. Since 1986 there have been hundreds more, including Pulp and the Libertines who owe their success to exposure by JP. The respose to his sudden death has been remarkable - headline news in the press and on TV which is gratifying. He championed both FTR and C&S and then did what he always did - moved on to new music - I'm sure he would have hated the very thought of a whole discussion list for one artist whose best work is almost certainly behind her! He was always looking forward, always changing, not caring about critics or repeating the same old thing - a bit like Joni, in fact. When I heard the news it affected me more than any one death should, but he was truly one of a kind - an inspiration and a legend across the generations. I am not sure we will know his like again. Peel was one of a small minority of DJs who were enthusiastic about music for it's own sake. Too often DJs and critics come across as interested in the hype, hipness or sex appeal of an artist. I also got the impression that he was a genuinely nice guy. I would have liked to have known him. I saw him in the street several times near where I work, but never actually spoke to him, of course. " 'Ere - you're that bloke on the radio aincha? No don't tell me, I'll have you name in a second, eerm .." The world really is a slightly poorer place for his passing.
