Thanks, Colin! >>> colin 10/22/04 04:49AM >>> It was a pleasure to read Bob's(scjoniguy) post this morning concerning his leaving his church in order to stand by his own conscience. I am immensely impressed by that. It is not often one comes across such integrity. So much of the pain and strife and in this world is created or sustained by people failing to have the courage to listen to their inner voice. Failure to accept that being authentic may well leave them outside the 'group', or rather not being to prepared the feel pain of such exclusion. Whether we like it or not, or accept it or not, we all experience the results of our thinking. It is important that we examine ourselves the best we can and try to understannd the motives behind our thoughts, beliefs and actions. No matter how committed we are to that, we will never be perfect and we will still act or think in a way that is not motivated in the way that we believe. No matter how conscientious we are in looking at the truth of our motives we will still manage to fool ourselves-though much less often then if we don't examine! I am also impressed by Bob's obvious love for his son and his striving to do the best he can for him. I am sure he has passed on his integrity to him and he should therefore live an authentic life for the good of himself and the rest of us. In these days(maybe it's just adulthood!) of deceit, or cowardice, lack of integrity and desire for power, posts like Bob's reminds me there is a power of Good in this world if only we recognize it and are able to tear ourselves away from the mezmorizing effect of Evil. - -- bw colin http://www.btinternet.com/~tantraapso/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2004 14:39:29 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: njc, JT and the Red Sox, and Mag's birthday! The friend she refers to is my friend Anne. Cheers, Paula __________ I feel compelled to let all my friends and contacts know what to do if they show up to vote (either early or on election day) and are told that their names are not on the voter registration lists or that they are registered elsewhere. That fact alone is not supposed to stop you from voting in most states. In Texas, specifically, if they say you're not registered, you are supposed to be provided a provisional ballot, which is sealed and counted separately after the election. Once it is proven that you were in the right place after all, or that your name should have been on the list, then those votes are counted. The problem is that provisional ballots take extra effort, and oftentimes poll workers won't take the time to let you know. They kind of count on people not knowing what to do, not knowing that they can get a ballot still, or being too intimidated to ask. I believe with all my heart that there is no greater crime against democracy than to deprive people of the right to vote, and so I encourage all of you to request whatever your state's provisions are for being able to cast a vote if there appears to be a discrepancy in the voter registration lists. I don't know what each state allows, but you can ask. The purpose of such ballots is to prevent the voter from being penalized and deprived of the right to vote when, in fact, it's somebody else's clerical error that is causing the problem. I send this to you because I will be in Florida on election day for poll-watching, and we've already gotten notice from the owner of our firm that those of us who can come early need to, because they're being inundated with reports of people being turned away from the polls and not being allowed to vote. I also send it to you because a friend of mine contacted me yesterday after they almost didn't let her vote in Hays County TX. The only way she got a provisional ballot was because she insisted on one. They were going to turn her away. She, of course, figures there's a conspiracy -- she's pretty much been a straight-ticket Democrat the 30+ years she's been voting and has moved into a Republican district. When she went in to vote they told her she was registered in Hopkins County, which is several hundred miles away in northeast Texas around Sulphur Springs, a place she has, at best, driven through on her way to somewhere else. They initially told her she couldn't vote, but she's a little hothead who wasn't going to be deterred, and she demanded that she be allowed. That's when they finally gave her the provisional ballot. I have no idea whether such actions are on purpose or simply error. It doesn't matter. There are remedies, but you have to ask for them (though, by law, you shouldn't have to). Finally, I send this to you because I think there will be many mistakes - -- honest, inadvertent, and deliberate alike -- due to the massive voter registration push preceding this hotly contested election. We're human beings, and there can't help but be errors. Just make sure that people don't simply walk away from the polls without voting when they really believe they are registered and in the right place. Final disclaimer -- I'm no election law attorney and I don't know the provisions in all the states. I'm merely encouraging you to check to see what remedies are available to you before walking away from the polls if you find that you do not appear on the voter lists. Starting with his two groundbreaking 1969 releases In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, Davis laid the foundation for jazz fusion, and brought funk and rock rhythms into the once sacred confines of the genre. A year later, with his new sound fully honed, Davis performed one of his most legendary live sets at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. It's this historic performance that will be featured in the DVD release Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue, due out on November 16th. The film-- produced and directed by Murray Lerner, and presented in 5.1 surround-- chronicles Davis' performance on the festival's second day, and features new interviews with a number of musicians from the era, including his sidemen for the set. Fellow Isle of Wight performers Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell also offer their recollections of Davis' shift in style, which has often been compared to Bob Dylan "going electric" in that it brought Davis' music into the mainstream and pissed off purists and elitists, who were quick to accuse him of selling out. As for the event itself, the 1970 show was the last of three consecutive annual music festivals held on the Isle of Wight and remains the single largest festival ever held in the United Kingdom some 30 years on. In fact, The Guinness Book of Records lists it as the largest recorded gathering of people, with 600,000 attendees; Davis himself was once quoted as saying, "I had never seen that many people out in front of me before." .: Pitchfork Review: Miles Davis: The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions .: Miles Davis: http://www.milesdavis.com http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/04-10/25.shtml _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? He had probably played "My Funny Valentine" hundreds of times, also perhaps "Freddy Freeloader," "Oleo," "Summertime" and other Davis classics. He created a band style that set the pace. He exposed and helped the careers of great sidemen. When he wanted to make a change, who could begrudge him? The first electric bands kept a connection with jazz but as time went on this connection frayed and frayed. Jazz has given a lot to my life and I will speak up for its integrity the best I can. Play anything you want, but if it doesn't swing, don't call it jazz. Play it but don't call it jazz. Listening to a jazz rhythm section is like looking fascinated into a fire in a fireplace. Listening to most pop music (and all "fusion" music) is like staring, catatonic, at a light bulb. Just my truth, friends.
