She says that all of how Laurent describes it is right on the mark, except for the wine :) She is very much a wine snob. It is very near Carcassonne. Of course, she being a librarian, she had to describe the Carths, and the heresy, and the Pope's Crusade, and their last stand, etc., but it all sounds very exciting and charming and very low key, something very attractive to me. Only a few years before, Joan Anderson gave up her daughter to dedicate her life to Sadie's dream; she became Joni Mitchell. In return, Joni got a *supernaturally large* talent and passion to write. When Joni regained her daughter, the muse left immediately. Sadie "took back" the gift. Joni said, "It's a rich exchange it seems to me." (Or are those Sadie's words?!) Joni dedicated the first album to Sadie if I recall correctly which only seems fair, in hindsight. "The gift goes on", Lama >>From: Bobdog25nj@aol.com paraphrased Joni: Joni: " Yes. See what happens when you do that "go" thing! There's no risk of alienating me over baseball, Vince. After I argue about politics, and sometimes religion, and art whenever someone says "ANYBODY could do THAT!" or "Joni's the greatest painter who ever lived", I don't have much energy left to fight about baseball. It is, though, much more enjoyable when a NY team wins, and always exciting when the Yankees are involved in the playoffs. Baseball is the only sport where almost everyone here gets involved (even those die-hard Yankee-hating Mets fans, although their involvement is more of a teeth-gnashing snarly kind). Radios blare out the game, TVs have crowds around them, and everyone has an opinion and feelings about what's happening and is willing to share them with complete strangers (although New Yorkers tend to do that about almost anything). So today is commiseration day, along with "hey, there's always next year!" and even a few quiet "the Red Sox deserve it." Yes! Not only does Bush continue to tell outright lies about his own record and about Kerry, but the Republican party is working very hard to make sure LOTS of Republicans vote and very few Democrats do. The Repubs are making it clear to anyone who isn't completely blinded by misguided loyalty or fear of change exactly why they're known as the "party of dirty tricks." They've had that label for decades for good reason, and they're really living up to it now. If the Repubs had policies that actually were good for the majority of people instead of policies that favor big business maybe they'd get more votes the honest way. Today's news is about how the military (the Repubs assume most of them would vote for Bush) are getting their ballots, but U.S. civilians throughout the world (most of whom would probably vote for Kerry) are not getting theirs, or will get them too late to be returned before the deadline and, so, will not be counted. Other days the news has been how the Repubs registering voters in Colorado are tearing up registration forms on which anyone has checked "Democratic" as their party, or how state police are going into the homes of African-Americans in Florida, especially those of older people organizing voters, and not really saying they can't vote, but making it seem like they could get arrested if they do, or Repub election officials in Ohio discouraging people from registering anyone who says they're a Democrat, and there was dirty business in Pennsylvania yesterday that I can't recall at the moment. The mind boggles at the extent of their nefarious deeds... sounds like a soap opera. I really wish that's all it was. Of course, the Repubs claim the Democrats are just as bad, but funny how there are no stories about the Dems playing such dirty tricks with the voters, not even from the cable news shows. It's proof again that the Repubs do a LOT of projecting. I'm no psychologist but whenever a Repub talking head on tv claims the Dems are doing something, they are describing exactly what the Repubs are doing. Bush saying about Kerry, "he can run but he cannot hide" from his record... well, yes, Georgie, that's exactly the situation you're in. It's been argued about before, and this may ruffle feathers, but still I cannot understand how anyone could vote for Bush this time around. > I'm sincerely concerned that I'm going to be shot at while driving around SC > with my two Kerry/Edwards stickers on my car. That's brave of you considering you're in a solid red, guns and Jesus state. Has anyone said anything to you? I've had a big anti-Bush button on my purse strap since I bought it at the protest rally in August. It has a picture of Bush in a red circle with a slash over his face and the word LIES! on it, and lots of people notice it but the only person who said she liked it was a young girl on a bus recently. She and I had a good talk about what Bush is doing, and the differences between him and Kerry. She wears a pro-Kerry button to school, and unlike some schools, her's lets the students make such statements. I had my button showing all during the Republican convention so maybe that's why no Repubs asked me for directions. None of them got close enough for me to slip them pro-Kerry flyers. Of course, it wasn't just the button. Most delegates traveled as a group by chartered bus from hotel to convention center and back to their hotel. Wussies! > I also have to register my son > (turned 18 this month) with the Selective Service. Now that's some REALLY > scary shit. And why does he have to register? Have young men always had to register, even when there's no draft? If so, why? And are young women registering also? One of the requirements of Bush's much-touted but underfunded "no child left behind" education act is that schools give information to the government about the students who have turned 18, and then the military recruiters pounce. I don't know what that has to do with quality education, but, then again, I'm not a Bushie. It's just one more of their exploitive tactics that makes no sense to me. One explanation for some of it is that the Bushies are extremely vindictive toward anyone who disagrees with them, so any reporter who asks Bush a question he doesn't like is no longer allowed access to him in press conferences or anywhere else. That shutting out is part of what keeps the press behaving favorably toward Bush. It's a fearful wicked controlling administration no matter how you look at it, but why the press can't somehow band together and fight that somehow is a mystery to me, too. I agree with you about CNN. I can't stand watching Wolf Blitzer anymore. He and some other CNN anchors pounce on anything said that's anti-Bush, even when there are government numbers to back up the person's claim, and yet they let the outrageous statements made by the conservatives slide on by. CNN's slogan "the most trusted name in news" is as truthful these days as Fox News claiming to be "fair and balanced." And what's up with the Gallup Poll, claiming that Bush is so far ahead? I'd never wondered about their honesty before, but their numbers are so different than those of other pollsters, I think it's time to wonder who they're working for. Sarah indeed returned my contribution, along with an apology that plans for the statue had not come together as she had hoped. Catch them if you can. Really? Not even indirectly? As for your wish that "the level was a lot higher," I'm guessing you mean the level of our choices for president. I agree. I often wonder why we don't get better candidates, but then I also have to wonder why anyone in his or her right mind would want to hold that office. All of that aside, we all need to remember that it's a package deal. While any of us may not be happy with a particular aspect of a candidate's value system (the gay marriage thing comes to mind as I write), none of us can afford to be a "single issue" voter. If Bush stays in office, so do the worst of the rest of his ilk. The Kerry package (unknown except for Edwards) may not have all the "right" answers either, but I'll take the risk and vote for CHANGE.
