Sting throws in his vocals on a song or two and I am told it is a very nice mix. Here is the snippet: "The thing I got from playing with Sting and Joni Mitchell, and Miles too, of course," says Botti, "was the idea of playing with space, with being lyrical, with finding balance." I had the pleasure of meeting him and chatting with him, Dave, and Jeff after the show (my friend who went with me had connections!) and I found them all to be very nice. Jeff was running around with a tee-shirt and jogging shorts and seems to be a real fun person. Chris is a jokester and I could tell that they all were having a good time touring together. It was their next to last stop on the tour and they seemed to be a bit giddy with fatigue. It was a very memorable evening for me. Ahh...Boney James! That is going to be a fantastic combination! There was one Jonifan who asked about the selection and commented, " Oh, I suppose you can't do too much, it may bring people down..." I had to laugh and tell him that it was the choice of songs which could do that, since we did Hissing of Summer Lawns and Sex Kills. The turnout was low- they invited 250 people and got about 100. I'm forgetting = some because some emails are on the office PC and I'm writing from home. I understand that for some of you (Hi Donna) this will be the 1st trip = to Europe. My goal is to make things as smooth and enjoyable for = everyone. So you'll get plenty of help with all the aspects of the = journey once you set foot on the continent. The area is an old medieval "Cathares" country (check the fascinating = history background). It's a golden unpopulated middle mountain land, = which is an interesting mix of :=20 wine country (lots of it and excellent too IMO), old villages (see = picture of typical street with medieval pavement), 11th century abbeys = (see picture), castles (you can see a couple in the background of the = last 2 pictures, although there are other real spectacular ones such as = Queribus and Peyrpertusse), "hippie" natural reserve (see picture of = local painter in her workshop). All those pictures were shot on a rainy day last Easter. The last 2 were = shot last summer and you can see it makes a huge difference. My friend Jean Yves' property is "the" magical spot in the area. He's a = charming host and makes everyone feel welcome. He's hitchhiked his way = from France to India several times so he's got great stories. My = favorite is his jail time in Afghanistan, which turned out to be a = really cool experience. That's hysterical, I'm ROTFL every time I hear = it. He is a true Deadhead as well as a spiritually evolved person. Pix 174 = is me in red with Jean Yves + some L.A. guest. There are always parties/improvised music there all summer long. Jean Yves hand built some bungalows, such as in picture 182. From the = main eating/stage area, one has an unobstructed view on the whole = valley. See the cloudy-day picture 181. One also has the same view while sitting on the toilet or while taking a = shower, unbelievable. There are many areas on this property where one can relax, alone or not, = play ping pong, or swim in the natural waterfalls running directly from = the mountain. The general idea is to offer guests the following options: * camping on the premises * lodging on the premises in one of the bungalows or in the renovated = ancient mill * B&B in the nearby villages. I think with carpooling that should be = easy. Meals can be taken on the premises, we'll find some people with kitchen = experience to take care of that. Marvellous person that she is, and as charming as she always is with us fans, and for all the pleasure she has given so many people, and on and on... she doesn't half talk some sh1te sometimes!! At the risk of repeating myself (like that's ever stopped me...), my greatest wish for Joni is that she stop fiddling around with her back catalogue, slough off her insecurities, open her ears and listen to some new music; find out that there IS still fantastic music being made. Maybe it would inspire her out of her jaded view of the biz today. I've been listening to Nellie McKay's new album, Get Away From Me. Wow! She's only about 20 and has come up with an extraordinary debut, full of wit and vigour, with an unbelievably wide range of styles and influences. She has a very sweet jazzy lilt to her voice, and also raps very well indeed (pretty fly for a white chick, to paraphrase somebody, can't remember who). She plays a wicked piano (including a very funny spoof of Alicia Keys's rather ostentatious style) and all manor of percussion instruments; she writes songs that take you on completely unexpected journeys in 3 or 4 minutes. She's far from perfect, but such a breath of fresh air. And if I hear Joni opining again about girly guile etc etc - and I fear there's a good chance of that - it makes me sadder than ever on her behalf. It's safe to come down from the ivory tower Joni. Would loving TI fulfill this requirement? b. the talk of BSN being written as by a much older person. I think back then in the 60's alot of artists an musicians who were, in fact, really young - took on alot of the feeling of things meant for older people. Maybe a left over thing of "beat". I get this feeling alot when listening to the early unreleased Janis Joplin stuff - how it is not the music of a very young person at all. I read some edition of Hesse's "Steppenwolf" where it was noted that it really isn't a young person's tale or book at all - and yet it had been taken to heart by so many people ( I would say largely in the 60's) who were indeed really young. c. I like how she likes her "later" voice. I like it too. The only thing is, this feeling she has - that she wrote sooooooo much about society and the world and the way it was going down etc after losing her daughter...WAIT! all the albums up til like 80 or so (to me) were totally subjective, introspective and having very little to do with "the world". Or no? Am I not getting it? seems to me the 60's and 70's albums were very insulated/isolated and in her head and in her bed, and then the social commentary ala 'Magdalene Laundries" came later. Altho surely some earlier than that. Anyway, just some musings. GOOD to hear her, and I must have the BSN album - it sounded so delicious - that bit.
