If anyone could tell me how the "James D" track (first one on the Shadow and Light album) was recorded, i'd love to know. Also, was is it a part of the show, or something that was added to the album release only? Nuriel, I assume that the audio from "Rebel Without A Cause" was dubbed in to the beginning in the studio. It's included in the LP/CD as it was the way the video kicked off. I didn't see this tour (a mjor regret) but I don't think it was featured in the actual live shows in '79. We had a tent and those big outdoor heaters, but since we were against the wasll we got a bit chilled. Yolonda's voice/ performance brought them to focus on Why, and the crowd also gathered around us during 'The Distance of Your Heart,', a song of mine. Lots of complimentary comments later on, which was nice to hear. The Joni material went over well. There was one Jonifan who asked about the selection and commented, " Oh, I suppose you can't do too much, it may bring people down..." I had to laugh and tell him that it was the choice of songs which could do that, since we did Hissing of Summer Lawns and Sex Kills. The turnout was low- they invited 250 people and got about 100. The food was gormet h'ordourves and pastries, with water, wine, beer, coffee and hot chocolate. There was a raffle but I didn't win the plane tickets for two to anywhere USA. Next is Joni's Birthday! What a grand oportunity to do 6 or 7 Jonisongs at M & M Club that night!!! Hi LAHM, Here is what I wrote: My guess is he (Kerry) is trying not to mix church and state and doesn't think the political issue has anything to do with sanctity. If I'm wrong, please let me know. It seems to me he thinks it is a civil rights issue, and he will see to it that all couples in legal unions (marriage or civil) will have equal rights. By saying, "he will see to it" I was saying Kerry will see to the political issue of civil rights not being denied. I was distinguishing the "civil rights" issue from the church issue of "sanctity." So *yes* I was implying civil rights is a political issue, but *no* I wasn't implying sanctity is a political issue. Kerry might believe in the Catholic notion of the "sanctity of marriage," but he won't vote against civil rights for homosexuals in legal unions because of his own religious beliefs any more than he would vote to ban partial birth abortion because of his personal beliefs about abortion. I think he is very consistent and one of the least prejudiced presidential candidates we've had. Every four years I would like to get excited about either side but as the deadline approaches I recall my disgust from the previous campaigns - the average voter votes because their friends vote, they vote because they personally have a pet peeve personal need and no one votes for the long term.... 9/11 changed everything except the mind of the body politic in the free world... we argue about past wars and performance then...Kerry served for four months as a lieutenant (then and probably still a "networked" opportunity only, George Bush the National Guard ( my brother got in that and we definitely are not of the "networked" variety) BUT ALL GRUNTS DID 9 MONTHS OR MORE ANYWAY IN Viet Nam - does anyone care that this ought in short throw aside that issue as a non-issue since neither really were grunts? Finally Dick Cheney mentions the Iraqi sacrifice in all this - neither party has made a big deal about this and yet this will determine the long term position of that country instead we focus on whether or not it was a right choice - Edwards echoed the clichi - "The only good defense is a good offense" - then attacking terrorism wherever it may have roots is necessary Neither candidate knew that 45% of black women are contracting Aids and Edwards to get the sympathy vote talks about Africa - makes you wonder why the minority will vote at all!? Has anyone investigated the voting records - I haven't and you know that brings the last point - free press - my ass! The press is not promoting anything but whom they personally like - scary thought that news can be engineered so that you get emotional, NOT LOGICAL - but dammit it is biased and isn't calling for substantive reporting, substantive questions and SUBSTANTIVE ANSWERS - they take advantage of the fact that the majority of Americans have little time and rely upon TV sound bites as KNOWLEDGE???? And then the press takes each tidbit it deems important to creating a view but here's my view of my life as an American: My love life is non-existent, I work 55 hours a week , doing okay need about $100,000 to get everything set to serene(who doesn't?) and all the hell I see reported every week both at home and abroad is far from my door, but when I watch that TV I get sickened by the stupidity, by the constant - "there is something wrong with you America" when I don't see that showing the sickness of the rest of the world so as to create a true balanced objective view - hell that would raise the mindset! We are say 275 million the world 6 billion - the politics of attrition and fool hardy give it all away - what's next? 275 million slaves? Who will I vote for? Would it matter ? I have had the TV off for about 4 months (since The West Wing went on summer hiatus). Tonight I saw a republican attack ad on Kerry's military career that was way, way over the top. Excepting Nixon smearing Helen G. Douglas as "the pink lady", this one might be the lowest I've heard of. It's easily the most inflamatory, polarizing, mean spirited, pathetic attack ad I've ever seen in my life in this democratic republic. What would Jefferson and de Tocqueville make of this? I guess that's enough from me on this topic. I'd like to take this to the political list, so what's the address? 2. Jimmy Carter was on Letterman last night, hawking a novel set during the US revolution. Dave asked him if he was going to observe the presidential election in Florida this year. President Carter said he's officially observed dozens of elections around the world but both parties have to welcome the process, and that... isn't... happening... this year in Florida. I've never seen Carter practically smarmy with partisanship before and it was alarming. He said some of the problems (plural) in Florida are the variety of equipment in the state, and lack of documented recount procedures. He didn't even mention the way they clean voter rolls. He thinks another hotly contested count in Florida might discourage people from voting. (Didn't I say that exact thing this week!?! As Han Solo said long ago and far away, "I hate it when I'm right all the time!") 3. NBC News says that the key states in deciding outcome in the Electoral College will be Ohio, Pennsylvannia, and Florida, Florida, Florida. Tim Russert, the political correspondant said "Florida" 3 times, as if he was doing a gossip piece for Entertainment Tonight. I winced at the circus aspect of his presentation, then realized my mouth had dropped open because it's '00 all over again. There's a sense that all of the tumblers are dropping into place, forming the worst possible scenario: an outcome that no one is comfortable with. I haven't felt this much dread since the air war began over Iraq, and I realized the Peace was going to be far, far bloodier than the war. If I wasn't so cynical, I'd register as a Democrat.
