I've read each and every reply to my question "Joni's songwriting - American or Universal?", and once again been reminded of how much i love you all. What a "Lucky Girl" i am to have you as my friends. All posts regarding this issue were very interesting and creative, to say the least. Mags idea was that "maybe" would be the right answer. (btw, i included Canada when speaking of what i refered to as 'American' - only because it made my question easier for me to express). I've also found your replys regarding my "English as a universal lunguage" to be good ones (though i know for sure that this ain't the case in China, most of Africa and the far east Asia, and being a regular turist in Italy and France - i know that most common citizens there hardly undrestand a word in English, or simply "refuse" to undrestand it, so that makes English=Universal wrong, if only for the China thing) Combining both answers now - and still using the "Universal" term - Well maybe (as dear mags wrote) - maybe if all songs in the world were translated to English, then all songs wouldv'e instantly become Universal. I'd even go further and say - all songs are Universal, no matter what language they're written/sung in - (and i'm leaving out the music issue out of this - music IS a Universal thing - i'm reffering to lyrics only) - becuase it's humans who write them (i never heard a lyric by an alien), and i for one, think that for that reason alone every lyric in the world is Universal. It's only when you put a lyric under glass and try to specify it, that you may find it being more of an "Spanish" lyric, "Belgium" lyric, "Cambodian" lyric, etc' - and in Joni's case - an "American" lyric. Let's pretend that Joni was to write lyrics that had nothing to do with anything American-wise. Love songs are always the easiest way to make a lyric seem "Unviersal". That would easily turn her to be a "pop" star. But that ain't the case with Joni. It's hard to find a Joni lyric that doesn't contain at least one "American" reference, name, place, date, quote, symbol, etc'. Most Joni's lyrics are well known for their "lots of details" way of writing. And those details are very often related to "American-wise" stuff. I think that this may just be one of the reasons for Joni's becoming less and less popular (world-wise) as time went by. Dare i say, but i even think that this is one of the main reasons that BSN (the album) was made. Pardon my patronizing, but i do honetly belive that Joni's will, at that time, was to record a Totally Universal album. I'm totally contradicting myself now (because i've said before that any lyric in the world is universal) - but unlike most of you, i think that Joni is one of the best examples for an American songwriter. Even when she's criticizing (nearly up to "hating") the "American way" (she speaks a lot about that in her last Vnity Fair interiview) - it's America that she's talking about. And in no way am i finding this to be a fault. Not at all. As i see it, and that's just an opinion, it was Joni's choice to focus on America. Myabe becuase that was one of the things that interested her the most, or one of the things that "helped" her devotion to writing the truth to spring out, or maybe becuase she used "America" as a microcosmoc. Either way, (coming from moi, a non-American man, but not too dumb when it comes to lyrics), Joni's amazing way of using a "Double-sense", a "Double-meaning" for nearly every word she wrote - makes even the "most American-wise" lyrics to have "Another" meaning - which in the end makes her lyrics Universal, even cosmic. Regarding what i said about Joni's focusing on America - i think there's a secret behind that choice, and myabe that's why so many folks out there still consider her an American country singer, maybe they're proud about Joni being "American", and unlike most of us would find the "Universal Joni" term to be insulting, know what i mean? but i'm afriad that only Joni knows the right answer to that. Dolly and Melissa dueted on "I Will Always Love You", which worried me at first, since I've never been a big fan of the song (since it was butchered by Whitney), but they did it in a blues style, and it was amazing! I found a book callee "Show Tunes 1905-1991." It lists a song "How'd You Like to Spoon With Me?" composed by Kern, with lyric by Edward Laska, from a show called "The Earl and the Girl" which opened Nov. 4, 1905, at the Casino Theatre (doesn't say where this is) and ran for 148 performances. The same song was used in a second show, "The Rich Mr. Hoggenheimer," which opened Oct. 22, 1906, in Wallack's Theatre (again, doesn't indicated what city) and ran for 187 performances. This book does not list the lyrics. Its index has no entry for a song "How'd You Like ta Swing With Me?" or a show or movie "Till The Clouds Roll By." When I first saw your question, I thought you might be referring to "How'd You Like to Swing on a Star?" (or "Would You Like to Swing on a Star?"). While one of those is the opening line, I'm not sure it's the title. That title doesn't appear in this book, either, and I don't know if it's a Kern composition. This song goes on with more "... or would you rather be a ..." and "How'd you like to ...," such as, "Or would you rather be a fish?" I looked at some more books, and found neither the second song, nor words to the first. Perhaps some other jmdler either knows more about one or both song(s), or will be able to search on the Internet. If anyone responds to this post, please send me a copy. I receive the only-Joni digest.
