What a schlep! I mean...trouper! And then they're in Florida on Friday ... Here's what a friend who went to Cleveland had to say about that show: " In short, it was freakin' incredible. The GA line mess however, was a freakin' nightmare and I will never do that again. We didn't get in to the pit and the way it was handled by Bruce's security was pathetic. I went into the arena in the worst mood I've been in for years. But all that washed away when the lights went out and Bruce hit the stage. It was his usual amazing show and the crowd just ate it up. I was surprised at how well REM and Bruce meshed because you wouldn't necessarily think that. John Fogerty was perfect and the way his set was in the middle of Bruce's was great. One of the highlights as always was seeing old friends and meeting new ones as people from all over the world came together in Cleveland of all places. From my perspective it was pure heaven. Here's what I sent to KFOG for my report: Highlights: Bruce's opening on 12 string acoustic - Star Spangled Banner. Took a minute for the crowd to realize what it was, then it became a goosebump, make-you-cry anthem of patriotism with 10,000 people singing along. Full band version of Born in the USA. The crowd knew the lyrics and that this is isn't the rallying cry of the Reagan era, but rather a song of disillusionment with America's treatment of its working class. No Surrender. One of my personal favorites, this song has has become Kerry's theme song and the crowd went crazy. John Fogerty joining the E Street Band to perform 'Fortunate Son', a song of the entitled during wartime, which struck a chord with everyone in terms of the comparison to our current president and his National Guard duty. "Some folks inherit star spangled eyes, ooh - they send you down to war..." Born to Run with house lights up. If you haven't seen this you might not understand, but its one giant Brucebump for me. Every single person knows every word, every fist-pump - and they let it show. The show closed with everyone from all bands on stage singing Patti Smith's 'People Have the Power', a song which I have heard before but no little about. It certainly fit after Bruce's exhortation to "go out and get to work. Be the foot soldiers and carry the message. Register now and vote in November and take someone with you. This is important. This matters." When I saw Bruce on the Rising tour there were always boos when he would take a minute to talk about our responsibility as citizens to pay attention to our government to be watchful and to question what was happening around us. This was most evident in NY at Shea Stadium where I was seemingly surrounded by angry Republicans who booed loudly, they only wanted to get drunk and hear 'Dancing in the Dark'. Although Bruce never took sides, they assumed he was attacking them personally. Now that Bruce has taken a stance and has become to me the voice of reason, those people weren't in attendance. What we had was one giant rally for the democratic party, where we were told to get to work if we want change. Works for me. Have you registered yet? Full Setlist: 01. Star Spangled Banner 02. Here's an article that was in yesterday's Vancouver Sun... Joining Joni's River Shawn Conner October 5, 2004 As a writer, Joni Mitchell has been responsible for some of the most vivid, lasting and impressionistic pop songs of the last 30 years. Consider a catalogue that includes "Both Sides Now," "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris." So it's only natural that some canny theatre type would eventually bring the Saskatchewan-raised songwriter's vision to the stage. Originally performed in Winnipeg at the Prairie Theatre Exchange in 2002, Joni Mitchell: River (at the Vancouver Playhouse Oct. 9-30) is a theatrical presentation of a number of Mitchell compositions. Accompanied by a four-piece band, three vocalists take turns on songs tracing the arc of love, from the giddy first moments to the ensuing power struggles to the insight that follows. For Rebecca Shoichet, one of the principal singers, the production has been an introduction to the many facets of Mitchell's talent. "I was slightly familiar with [the 1971 Mitchell album] Blue, but I grew up in a generation that wasn't saturated with her," says the 29-year-old while one of her bands, Soulstream, soundchecks at a Yaletown nightclub. "She's an incredible songwriter and I knew that already, but you don't often get a chance to do an intense study of a specific songwriter, and as a writer myself it's been a huge learning experience. She's so prolific it's amazing." As a member of the 10-piece Soulstream, a cover-band-for-hire, the Ottawa-born, Victoria-raised performer belts out Michael Jackson and Chaka Khan hits, while as front woman for original act Mimosa, she sings a blend of bossa nova, jazz and pop. Shoichet also does voices for anime and, when time permits, gives teaching lessons. But when her piano teacher told her about River, she couldn't resist auditioning. John Mann, of Vancouver folk act Spirit of the West, and Loretta Bailey, a performer from Toronto, were the other two successful applicants. "I hadn't met them before, so there was some of that first-day-of-school kind of nervousness on the first day of rehearsals," says Shoichet. Now, the bubbly, diminutive singer has nothing but nice things to say about the two "incredible" co-stars who take solo turns on some songs and join in on others. "Generally, I'm singing in between the two of them, harmony-wise," says Shoichet. "We blend really well for the three-part stuff. But we're also three individuals as characters in the show." Shoichet makes it clear that, despite how it might seem, Joni Mitchell: River -- directed by its creator, Allen MacInnis -- is not about a love triangle. "It's more like there are these three people sharing their own experiences with each other and with the audience," she says. "We're not connected. We have individual relationships we're talking about." Nor does River trace the journey of a talented Canadian from Saskatoon-raised small-town girl to internationally respected songwriter and musician. That production will have to wait. "It's about the music," says Shoichet. "You really get to listen. This is going to be a listener's dream, just to hear transitions from song to song. The flow of one song into another is poetic. It's kind of like a river, which is the idea." My friends from Italy did the GA line and it WAS a mess, they had to go back repeatedly for new armbands and re-drawings, and more lines. My wife & I were content to sit in the Winking Lizard cafe and watch while we sipped our Spaten ales. The good news for my friends was that her exact armband/lottery number was called exactly, so she was the FIRST Bruce fan to walk thru the doors. Also cool was that the number was #309 which is my address! Bob, catching up and going on 2-1/2 hours of sleep...but stay tuned for the VFC Pearl Jam concert from last night... Yes, I do believe we are in Iraq because of 9/11 OK, I get your point...add the people that died in 9/11 to the numbers of Iraqi dead...and while we're at it, let's add in the people who died in the War of 18-freakin'-12 because there's no connection there either! But for the record, I see that your statement doesn't say that we SHOULD be in Iraq because of 9/11, just that we ARE in Iraq because of 9/11, so there's certainly no argument there. 9/11 gave Wolfowitz (with his private agenda), Cheney and all the real Washington power players the blank check to shock and awe anywhere in the Middle East they wanted to bomb, knowing that your average American doesn't know the diff between Iraq, Iran, Dubai, Kuwait or any of them. Sadly they did not underestimate the gullibility and stupidity of the American populace and its herd mentality. The facts are as Colin stated: No WMD's No weapons capabilities No threat to the US They did nothing to us - they were not going to do anything to us. Of course, they and other terrorist groups have LOTS of reasons to strike back now (like Ani says 'aggression begets aggresion'), and will the world feel sorry for us like they did on 9/11 - hell no, why would they? Everyone loves to see an a-hole bully get his comeuppance. Thanks George...damn, I feel SO much safer. Like my son said last night, our invasion of Iraq (based on OUR decision that they MIGHT someday be a threat) is a lot like shooting your neighbor's dog because he might someday crap in your yard. I do love that kid. Also, thanks for calling me a gentlemen - you are correct with that declaration and you know that I admire your level head and wisdom and your analytical skills. But even the most genteel of gentlemen has his limits on his civility, and like Kate, those of us with teenage children may be a little more emotionally volatile because we see our own children in those oh-so-secret flag-draped caskets sneaking back in to Dover...and it PISSES US OFF! I had pretty low hopes for it as I wasn't sure if Dylan was the best to write his own story. But what I've read has been exactly what I always hoped he talk about but never thought he would.
