I asked her rather they make Fest CD's, and she said they do not 'cause of copyrights issues. So i was wondering, as someone who has no knowledge whatsoever about what JoniFest CD's are - 1. Are the JoniFest CD's songs by Joni covered by the JoniFest artists as they've performed them at the fest? 2. If so, how does the JoniFest solve the copyrights problems? I'm trying to understand so maybe i can help my friend, so i'd be realy thankful for your information. Hugs, Nuriel New and Improved Yahoo! Artists I didn't care for much at the time but have since grown to like: - - - Led Zeppelin - never cared for the singing, but have new appreciation for the music and lyrics and can therefore tolerate the singing now - - - Ani DiFranco - I didn't care for her voice, still don't much, but anyone that can write lyrics like hers deserves to be listened to and now I realize the voice is part of who she is and wouldn't change it for the world. And her percussive guitar-playing is very cool too. Artists I knew about but paid more attention to since joining the jmdl and have since grown to like a whole lot: - - - Patti Smith (Hi Garrett) (what is up with all these women named Patty or Patti?) - - - Richard Thompson (where has he been all my life? My best friend (Olana Kiruluk -- where are you?) gave me "Song to a Seagull" our freshman year. We idolized her sister Donna (she was a big SENIOR!) and her taste in music (she had been to Woodstock) and she originally gave Olana this album, who then gave it to me. Anyway, the rest is (my) history......a fan is born! I have three really strong memories of this time, two of which involve "high school writers": 1. In 10th grade we had to write an in-class essay. Mrs. Carney gave us about 20 statements/topics to choose from. Guess who chose: "We are stardust, we are golden, and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden?" LOL....I wish I could find that essay now, to see what sophomoric jive and/or sweet drivel I wrote. It would be precious, in any case, from a newly-sprouted Joni fan, wouldn't you think? I would imagine I was quite passionate trying to make my case. 2. As chairman of the sophomore class dance, I insisted that the name be "Night in the City". Many of my classmates were saying: "HUH? Who is Joni Mitchell?" but I persisted (a true Jonievangelist even at the tender age of 15!). The dance was a great success, and much better than the big floppy MESS that was our freshman class dance -- the "Purple Haze" we tried to create with dry ice and purple spotlights just made a big wet mess on the floor and we had to end it early. Oh well, at least the band didn't sound like typewriters. 3. In 12th-grade English, we had to do a big project for a major part of our grade, and cool Mr. O'Connor gave us a long list of topics to choose from. I'm reading down the list, wondering whatever am I going to pick, not enthused at ALL by any of the topics, and then: EUREKA!!!! BINGO!!!! AN INTELLECTUAL ORGASM OF COSMIC PROPORTION!!! The sun breaks through the clouds and a choir of heavenly angels sings: "The Impressionism of Joni Mitchell" (NPIMH: Alleluia Chorus). I did a lot of research for that report and enjoyed every minute of it. For the final oral presentation, I remember dragging in my albums (STAS, Clouds, LOTC) and the French art books and having A WONDERFUL TIME (a la Emiliano!). (Aside: Jerry and Muller -- has anyone ever written a Ph.D. dissertation on Joni?). Once again, I don't have a copy of the paper and sure wish I did. Pardon these self-indulgent memories here -- but where else could I share them? Vive la Joan! Those who do the performing own the copyright to the the recording at the fest. If they allow for the limited distribution of the discs to certain individual there are no copyright violations at all. Is it just me, or does everyone reading her story and hearing her music come away with this sense of awe mixed with sadness that she is no longer here? I think I was especially saddened by a story on her website which tells of her and producer/friend Chris Biondo going to New York to meet with Apollo Records, a subdivision of Motown Records. The meeting went really well and she went away with a promise of a recording contract and a large advance. Neither of them came as the record label went bankrupt a few months later. Man! Happy October to all, and let's get this month started with another 'live-on-the-razor's-edge' edition of Joni Covers, number FIFTY-SEVEN in the never-ending series. And 57 must be a lucky number! Besides being a fine fine volume in the series, it's the year I was born and a number that Joni mentions twice (Raised On Robbery and Come In From The Cold). Like every other voume, this CD contains Joni songs from across the years, across her catalogue, and across the world. Let's dig in and give it a spin - but first, a BIG thanks to the folks who helped me put it together: - -Monica Cardinale (an INCREDIBLE asset to this entire series; anyone who has enjoyed the covers series owes her a big thank-you) - -Stephen Toogood And now, the tracklist: 1. Jibe Project - Chelsea Morning: This little funky number made it onto my Sweet 16 for 2004, I've already praised it so I'll move on. 2. Jeannette Lindstrom - Both Sides Now: Swedish Jazz singer turns in a lovely performance of Joni's big standard. Great trivia here - the pianist on this track (it's just piano & vocal) is Steve Dobrogosz, who (like David Sedaris) went to my same High School in Raleigh, NC. He was about 2 years older than me, his sister Karen was in my graduating class. I remember he won a school talent show with a performance of "Midnight Cowboy". 3. A Cappology - Blue: College acapella, this one comes from NC State University, and my alma mater does me VERY proud with a great acapella take on one of Joni's most haunting melodies. Well done, gang - almost makes me want to finally send NCSU some money...I said ALMOST. 4. Wayne - This Flight Tonight: Heavy Metal lite from Germany. Some great jangly guitars and guilty air guitar pleasures here. 5. Frannie Verney & The Big Idea - Rainy Night House: Lovely soft jazz-rock take on RNH from this British band, I love the loose flowing feel on this one. 6. The Splinter Group - Both Sides Now: More UK sounds, this one from a 60's folk trio, long since splintered I would imagine. Pretty harmonies here, though. 7. Dark One Lite - Big Yellow Taxi: In a word, bizarre. This one just came out last year, on a COUNTING CROWS tribute CD no less! It's an instrumental guitar and organ thing with a buzz scat-type vocal, like I say it's pretty weird but enjoyable in its own way. At least it's not another one of those "kids copying the Crows single" versions! 8. Street Level - The Dry Cleaner From De Moines: Another entry from Britain, a solid jazz band and a nice vocal, played very much like the Mitchell-Mingus vocal & instrumental arrangements. 9. Lenora Zenzalai-Helm - Twisted: Accomplished New York jazz singer Lenora was 1998's Jazz Ambassador, and turns in a fine Ella-like take on the Gray-Ross classic. 10. Uli Scherbel - Beide Seiten (Both Sides Now): Uli is from Germany, and sings this in his native tongue with his beautiful tenor. A simple piano accompaniment allows his emotional vocal to really take flight as he builds the song from a gentle beginning to a dramatic crescendo. 11. Lianne Carroll - Parking Lot (Big Yellow Taxi): More jazz from England, this is from her live recording, and is a real jazz jam with some great solos, at 5:55 it's one of the longer BYT's out there. 12. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Medley: In France They Kiss On Main Street/Coyote: This duet from Italy just blows me away! Fabio (not the model with the abs) plays an amazing acoustic guitar, and Elisabetta is a perfect foil with her emotional and playful vocal licks, with just a hint of what is for me a very, very sexy accent. OK Bob, settle down... 13. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Wow, the 2-minute guitar intro here will make you melt, and the whole 9+ minutes will leave you in awe. Fabulous. 14. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - A Case Of You: Another wow, Fabio's original arrangement and intro will most likely bring the water to your eyes, just incredible. And then throw the vocal in...very powerful stuff. 15. Roberto Mann Orchestra & Chorus - Both Sides Now: Cheese. Sorry. 16. Kirke - Little Green: 17. Kirke - My Old Man: This group from Holland played these songs at a Dutch Joni Festival - these were taken from the radio broadcast so they're a bit static-y but not really enough to take anything from what are two lovely versions of Blue classics. Again, tremedous thanks to Monica for uncovering these rare and unreleased recordings! And that's it - I couldn't pack my usual 20 or so tracks on this one but at over 75 minutes, you won't feel shortchanged when you hear it. And this volume is so awesome, it almost sounds like a Sweet 16 all by itself! If you want to read more about these artists, many are linked from the JMDL Covers page: _http://www.jmdl.com/covers/byartist.cfm_ (http://www.jmdl.com/covers/byartist.cfm) OK, now to get packed and ready to go to Cleveland - whoo-hoo. Anyway, long ago, I told this very list about my long-running quest for a really great sounding "For The Roses" on white promo vinyl. "For The Roses" is one of my desert island discs. I think the songwriting, the playing, & the tunes have never been bettered. I just don't think it's possible for human beings to make a better album. But, uh... well, it's just that... uhm... It's not your speakers, babe. The piano sound on any Tori Amos album is MUCH cleaner. To me, "For The Roses" is a perfect album that doesn't have a perfectly transparent sound. I gave up. Now I enjoy it for the flawless album it really is, rather than perseverating on its flaws. :) "There is no spoon." When I want a great album with a really transparent sound at 2AM, I turn off all of the lights, and put on "The Trinity Session". They may be out there but I haven't seen them in print. I have always been interested in what Van may think of Joni because he was my #1 poet laureate until Joni came along. (sure Dylan is one of the greatest poets, too, but read through all Van's lyrics and whoa whoa). I did hear some gossip around the time that Joni was touring with Dylan and Van on the west coast in '98 (and I think you were there at the L.A. concerts, right?) that Van was very enamored of Joni but Joni was a little shy (skeered) of him.
