After all the rehearsing i thought i'd share with you that i started a new trio: Rhythm & Torch Comprised of myself on piano and vocals; Yolonda Roth on vocals and percussion, and Joe H. on congas, bongos, and the like... We have our first two paid gigs in the next 6 weeks: October 16th at a benefit party for BeSTD Clinic (1 set), and November 7th (Joni's B-Day) at the M&M Club, downtown Milwaukee (3 sets). We do originals and have 3 Jonisongs on the roster: Sex Kills (the version from Pazfest) Night Ride Home and Hissing of Summer Lawns. Other artist's songs include: Marc Cohn, Bette Midler, Martha Wash, Oleta Adams,Joe Cocker, Billy Joel, Millie Jackson(!), Annie Lennox,(Yolanda's version of WHY is to die for!) Mama's and the Papas, etc. We are also doing some 'sound/music augmentation',(Like I did at Jonifest last year.) but the primary focus is acoustic/live. (If we are successful, we are looking to add a bass player...) I'm so open to song suggestions- we're focusing on pop with 'latin affectations'; light jazz, folk that can be snazzed up a bit, etc.-we are looking for material. Amazing how all the songs I used to do with bands were tossed to the wayside! Alot of my own material doesn't work with this format, but, it's something I've wanted to try for a few years now, and let's see if this experiment flies or crashes on take off... Wish me luck! Al played Joni's song, "Be Cool" from her CD "Wild Things Run Fast" He made the mistake of saying "Free" instead of "Fast" but he gave a very glowing tribute to her after the song was over. Believe it or not, I've never heard "Be Cool" because I lost track of Joni in the 80's and I do not have many of the CD's from this part of her career. I really liked the song. Though many shy away from the Smooth Jazz scene, this program is different because Al can play whatever he wants to on it. He plays Native American Music, World Music, even a song entitled "Lover's Waltz". It was absolutely beautiful. The program is five hours of the most eccletic mix of music I've ever heard. Al also promotes local artists which will include me in the next few weeks (I have an email to prove it!) I keep putting a bug in his ear to get syndicated! He also plays Richard Stolz' (sp?) version of "For Freee" sung by Judy Collins (last week) I knew there was a reason this guy and I get along so well! I wish you all could have heard Al's glowing tribute to Joni. It made me very proud!!! It goes like this (from bad memory and translated from french): The lion is powerful, so is the BRUTALITY of my passion to acquire material things ... A sheep trembling at the lion, king of animals, is like my INNOCENCE against my passions... The matter I'm made of gets pulled in four directions: ...., corruption, ........, false pretenses (sorry I forgot the other 2) and I will use every ARTIFICE to satisfy those pulsions. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! I love the way she starts a song quiet & slow like she's gonna do a ballad or something, then before you know it she's kicked up the pace and you're jamming by the end. Good stuff - thanks again, when I think of all the music this group has turned me onto it boggles my mind. Those who dare riding a car know that somewhere along the way they'll get hit with stones thrown by religious kids, and this year a child who was riding a bycicle got beatten so badly he nearly died. Beaten ny whom? By those who after beating him rushed to pray for forgivness from what's his name. People who eat pork all year long, would curse a gay guy when spoted at the street, would treat women like dirt, would use their power as soldiers to abuse arabs, all those amazing folks do not eat on that day and are falsly singing their prayers - because they know that what's his name has promissed to forgive them. This day is nothing less than THE national hypocracy day of Israel. But don't you worry - we've got lots of others too.
