As I usually do when I get a new biography, I checked for any Joni mentions in the index and found the following: > By 1987, Kirsty and Steve [Lillywhite] had moved to a large house in the affluent west London suburb of Ealing. They would host the rock and roll equivalent of a salon, with huge amounts of food, drink, music and good company. Their guests ranged from old school friends to rock stars and supermodels, and from respected stalwarts of British theatre and television to Stella McCartney, Kate Bush and assorted members of the Rolling Stones and U2. Among the guests at a New Year's Eve party at the house was Joni Mitchell, who came along with a friend of Steve's, the former Free and Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke. Kirsty was thrilled to meet Joni and immediately commandeered her. In the course of the evening, Kirsty, in a sweet fan-like gesture, gave Joni a thoughtful gift - one of her own favourite books, in which she had written a brief inscription. The regal Ms Mitchell accepted the gift but her failure to reciprocate left Kirsty feeling very disgruntled. "Kirsty was thinking, 'Joni Mitchell, how fantastic!'" says Steve. "But she never got anything back; not a thank you or anything. And I remember her saying, 'Bloody hell, she never gave me anything!' But it was like you don't give something to get something back! I'm sure Joni Mitchell didn't know who Kirsty was, or that it was such an important thing that Kirsty had given her." < best to all PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 07:51:31 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: Kirsty MacColl (was Karen O'Brien's Bio) As a Kirsty fan I was thrilled to read this. Was he > misquoted? Did he retract his comments? From the World IQ, and supported by most sources I found: He converted to Islam in 1978 , changed his name and abandoned his previous career as a pop star. At one point he wrote to the record companies, asking that his music no longer be distributed; the request was denied. He appears to have changed this position, as his web site today lists the available albums. He states that much of the royalties are given to charity. His comments in 1989 concerning Salman Rushdie after the publication of Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses provoked controversy. During this time period an Islamic fatwa (religious ruling) was issued, holding that it was an obligation of Muslims to kill Salman Rushdie. Yusuf Islam publicly stated that Rushdie was indeed guilty of blasphemy against Islam, and Rushdie deserved to be killed. This led to a public outcry, and a drop in record sales. In response to this criticism, Yusuf Islam has since clarified that he believes that a death sentence can only be carried out by the authority of a court in an Islamic society, and that he is opposed to anyone taking the law into their own hands by murdering Rushdie. Seems Yusuf/Cat is misinformed, at best........ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 05:57:56 -0700 (PDT) From: briangross@rocketmail.com Subject: DJRD in Las Vegas Mercury *Please note, the sender's email address has not been verified. Yusuf Islam gave the textbook response that a new student of his adopted faith would give, much the same way a Christian would recite the Ten Commandments. His response noted that blasphemy is a capital sin in the Muslim faith (for the record, I think the Big G of Christianity is also on record as not being a big fan of blasphemy). He NEVER suggested that Islamic religious laws should supercede the laws of the UK, in much the same way that there is not a lot of stoning of adullterers or cutting off of theives' hands in the western world today. And he NEVER used the word fatwa or even referenced the Ayatollah's statement against Rushdie. Well, wouldn't you know it, the guy asking the question must have been a journalist looking for something juicy, and the newspaper headline the next day read "Cat Says Kill Rushdie!" The rag that 'broke the story' (The Daily, I think) has ceased publication, likely because of sensationalist reporting like this. Yusuf Islam immediately released a statement of clarification. Not a retraction, because he had nothing to recant. he was asked a question about what Islamic scriptural law had to say on a matter at an academic lecture. He gave an academic response and was blindsided by a yellow journalist. He has had to revisit this matter countless times, each time saying 'I was asked about Islamic laws and I responded as a student of Islam to the best of my abilities, never siding with the Ayatollah and never suggesting fatwa...' But the "Cat Says Kill Rushdie!" fallacy persists. I guess it's a lot jucier than the truth. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 12:00:16 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: cat stevens NJC In 1991, Yusuf Islam led protests against America and the Gulf War in Bradford, England and demanded immediate withdrawal of our troops. According to terrorism expert Steven Emerson, who testified before Congress in 1996 about the militant group Islamic Association for Palestine: IAP is presently headquartered in a nondescript strip shopping mall in Richardson, Texas. IAP has set up an elaborate publications and video operation to promote Hamas, in both Arabic and English. While the Arabic brazenly supports Hamas, IAP's English-language publications and videos -- clearly intended for non-Muslim Western audiences-- are relatively tame, refraining, for the most part, from advocating terrorism and hatred against Jews and Christians. But not entirely. One IAP publication, called "America's Greatest Enemy: The Jew and an Unholy Alliance," has been routinely distributed at Islamist conventions. Another IAP brochure, authored by Yusef Islam, formerly known as the singer Cat Stevens before he converted to Islam, contains plain old anti-Semitism: "The Jews seem neither to respect God nor his creation. Their own holy books contain the curse of God brought upon them by their prophets on account of their disobedience to Him and mischief in the earth. We have seen the disrespect for religion displayed by those who consider themselves to be 'God's chosen people.' ... There will be no justice until all the land is given back to its rightful owners ... Only Islam can bring peace back to the Holy Land..." From his home in Great Britain, Islam/Stevens has also raised tens of thousands of dollars for Hamas, in cooperation with the British fundraising arm of Hamas, known as the Relief Fund for Lebanon and Palestine. In July 2000, Stevens was kicked out of Israel. According to the AP: The man who gained fame as pop star Cat Stevens was denied entry into Israel and deported hours after arriving, officials said Thursday -- reportedly because he gave money to a militant Islamic group during his last visit. Defense Ministry officials refused to comment on Yusuf Islam's case other than to say that the Shin Bet, Israel's internal intelligence agency, had ordered the man who wrote such songs as "Peace Train" and "Wild World" barred from the country. Islam, 51, who changed his name after becoming a Muslim in the late 1970s, last visited Israel in 1988. The government claims that during that trip he delivered tens of thousands of dollars to Hamas, a militant Islamic group, the Maariv daily reported... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 11:13:33 -0500 From: "Anne Sandstrom" Subject: American Idol, drivel, and such (njc) Well, I for one haven't a CLUE about American Idol, except to say I've never seen it. (Spent way too many evenings at painful open mikes in my performing days to find any of this even remotely amusing...) As for the drivel on radio - oh yeah. I finally have gotten so disgusted, I've been listening to classical music almost exclusively. But, wait! If you go to pretty much any classical radio station's web site, they list the same DJs (who do happen to be based here in Boston - right around the corner from my house, actually...) So, what's up with that???? Well, at least I've been turned on to some composers whose work I didn't know well, like Faure and Vaughn Williams. And, for the record, I checked out the Joni section in some big conglomerate "media" store the other day. Lots of copies of the recent (re-)releases. Well, I'm NOT paying money for what I already have. And (frankly) I'm not terribly fond of her artwork, so it doesn't make sense for me to pay money for little copies of that either. (Give me a Butterworth seascape any day!) It's been so long since I had any music really grab me. Well, except Branford Marsalis' Creation CD - but then everyone else seems to hate it, so what do I know? Oh, and I wonder who it is that sings on some car commercial (shows lots of doors, then a garage door opens to show two silver luxury looking cars). Now what's a loyal Joni fan to do? I explained my dilemna, as a Joni fan, and selected Amelia. And the nice man said: "Joni Mitchell is awesome!" SMILE EVERYBODY! I see something of Joni in everyone, just at this moment of the world. Then on the way back, I got four thumbs-up from other motorists for my Kerry/Edwards sticker. (I am proud of that sticker, because to me it says: I AM NOT STUPID!) Then I saw a stop sign where someone had stuck a "Bush, PLEASE!" bumpersticker under the word "STOP". I saw nary a Bush/Cheney sticker on my little post office trip. THEN, I get back to my computer to see that Emiliano came briefly out of lurkdom in Spain to shine his love light on us all once again. Was he > misquoted? Did he retract his comments? what he actually said in 1989, during a public speech, when asked by an audience member how blasphemers should be dealt with, was "The Qu'ran makes it clear if someone defames the Prophet, then he must die." Mr. Islam claimed he was just quoting scripture in a factual and general manner, but he sounds to me like a man caught between Islamic fundamentalism and his own conscience. He surely knew when asked the question that the subtext was about Rushdie-after all, he himself spearheaded a campaign to urge the publishers not to print the book, and still believes it should be banned by the government (of Britain, presumably). He held a press conference the next day to try to explain. I find it telling that, to this day, he has not said "Hey, a fatwa against an author? That's crazy, I would never support that. No one should be murdered over their beliefs, etc...." On the other hand, he released a newly recorded version of his song "Peace Train" to benefit Iraqi war children, (above) his first visit to his former songs in 22 years; so I don't think he is a violent man, really, but as a follower of a religion that sometimes advocates violence, he cannot fully denounce it either. Funny, huh? He also points out that the bible calls for death by stoning for blasphemy. ** And now, more Cat Stevens links than you wanted: faqs about Cat: http://catstevens.com/faq/index.html#00012 His 2003 Satanic Verses comments: http://catstevens.com/articles/00236/index.html 2000 interview:http://www.superseventies.com/sscatstevens.html His orig 1989 press release concerning controversy: http://catstevens.com/articles/00013/index.html Islamic view of blasphemy article: http://www.yahoodi.com/peace/blasphemy.html 1999 jmdl discussion of Cat Stevens including my "Peace Train, my ass" comment: http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni/v04.n018 (Ironically, in The Satanic Verses Rushdie had a caricature of Stevens - -- the convert pop star Bilal X -- sing "Burn the books and trust the Book; shred the papers and hear the Word.") This morning I had a pre-HDCD version of MINGUS and a desire to fill in my Emmylou Harris collection (especially now that her back catalog was remastered recently). Columbia House offered me 4 for $25.44, grand total. MINGUS, ELITE HOTEL, PIECES OF THE SKY, & LUXURY LINER. Yeah baby, yeah! NJC Okay, I love this album but I have just ordered a remastered version to play at work. If you don't already have Joni's collaboration with Charles Mingus (and a steller band), write to me off-list. I'll send it out via the cheapest method possible. Who needs this, Em? Bob S.? Simon? (just kidding, big guy.) - --- Personnel: Mitchell, guitar and vocals; Jaco Pastorius, bass guitar; Herbie Hancock, electric piano; Wayne Shorter, soprano sax; Peter Erskine, drums; Don Alias, congas, percussion; Emil Richards, percussion; unidentified horns. arranged by Pastorius (cut 9). - --- To whet your appetite, here's an excerpt from the glowing review of MINGUS by Neil Tesser of downbeat magazine in the Aug 9th, 1979 issue: - -------- This is a wonderful piece of work. From all reports, the trepidation in Jon Mitchell's heart as to how this project might be accepted has been matched only by the skepticism of scores of jazz purists. But the proof is here, and Joni and her critics can forget their fears. Mingus is so ambitious, so painstakingly constructed and so special, that even in those moments when the deed fails, the thought carries the day. And when it all clicks as on "Porkpie Hat", which, after three hearings, I can no longer listen to dry-eyed--it soars with the breadth and majesty Mingus so often achieved. - -------- All the best, Lama ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 19:45:20 -0400 From: Seulbzzaj@aol.com Subject: Re: Anyone Dreaming? Mary wrote: Scott, I've got to say: what Joni said works for me. And it makes perfect sense. Just "guesses at most," but I think that few of us can begin to understand just how traumatic the relinquishment of Kilauren was for Joni. It rocked her world, and not in a good sense; she wrote and sang, I'm convinced, in order to survive, deal with the pain, and interpret the world so that *something* made sense. Now, thank heavens, she no longer feels compelled to cope with her life in that way. She didn't stop recording before giving us one of the most memorable catalogues compiled by any popular musical artist in the the past 50 years, and I thank her for that. So, if you're "retired," Joni--enjoy the ride. And paint up a storm!! >> Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad to know that Joni is happy, but I do wish that she would continue to record. Unlike most people here, I think Joni's singing became more expressive than ever in the last decade, and for purely selfish reasons, I would love to hear more of her gorgeous voice and phrasing. So, in other words, the fact that she says she has retired, is sad for me, but I couldn't be happier for her. I was also curious as to what was up with this and found the various articles about Rushdie (which also said he denied it) and his past support of Hamas (or groups associated with Hamas). Also read that he had been previously allowed in the country not that long ago, so it's hard to know what more is involved (that we don't know). >I am against this kind of watch list which discriminates > indiscriminately against all Moslems I know some people who work in jobs where watch lists are involved and the policy is absolutely not to automatically discriminate against all Moslems. There have to be a number of other factors involved. In fact, we have had incidents of very suspicious people on airplanes in recent months. Alarmed passengers reported these incidents and the people in question were let go and not deported. Always loved Cat's music. Don't know what is up with this. But saying that he is not welcome here at this time is in no way on par with slicing his head off when he steps off the plane, either. Kakki P.S. The McGreevey vignettes have been brilliant ad I DO think there is a quote of the day market for them! ;-) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2004 02:05:06 -0400 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Library Links: September 24 On September 24 the following articles were published: 1997: "Feud Takes A Public Turn" - Dallas Morning News (News Item) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=73 1998: "New Stripes" - San Diego Union-Tribune (Review - Album) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=327 ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2004 #388 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
