Just got back from a beautiful concert by Caroline Lavelle at Ocean 2 in Londons unfashionable East End. If the name sounds familiar, its because CL has contributed to the worldwide Joni covers mountain with her take on A Case Of You, which she didnt play tonight. She plays the cello beautifully, writes wonderful songs and arrangements, and has a very lovely, deep, creamy voice. She had a superb and sympathetic band tonight, and was charm personified during and between songs. Highlights included the quietly lubricious Gently Johnny, an exquisite setting a Brian Patten poem called Innocence Sleeping, and a sumptuous rendition of Banks Of The Nile (which you may know from the Sandy Denny version), featuring a psaltery, an instrument Id barely heard of. The genre could not be described with one word; it would have to encompass neo-classical/folk/pop/chamber/chill-out/dance. Check out her website, dear music lovers: HYPERLINK "http://www.carolinelavelle.com/"www.carolinelavelle.com On Wednesday it was PJ Harvey at Hammersmith Apollo, the biggest gig Id been to in years. Even though I was a long way from the stage, Polly was electrifying, in a slinky dress and fluorescent orange heels, prowling the stage or attacking her guitar with a passion. Her band were on fire throughout, especially the drummer (Matt Ellis, I think), and the guitarist, who occasionally doubled up on drums, most memorably on the unfeasibly exciting A Perfect Day Elise. To Bring You My Love was scarily visceral, Victory ecstatic, Shame was a funky strut. A measure of just how good PJ Harvey is that she could do a power-packed and diverse set and leave out: Sheela-Na-Gig, Dress, The Dancer, Send His Love To Me, Angeline, We Float, Horses In My Dreams, A Place Called Home, etc etc. Next stop: Christine Collister on 8th October - yay! Perhaps he'll wander along one day to the JMDL and see the long long long list of recordings and change his tune.
