It's funny because I was thinking the same thing as I was watching the Weather Channel last evening and realizing that landfall of Ivan would be very close to New Orleans. It's funny how Paz and New Orleans go hand in hand. (You own the town Paz!)anyway, my thoughts and prayers go to all of our JMDL'ers in the affected areas. So far my family and friends in the paths of Charley, Frances and Ivan have made it through - Relatives in Orlando hunkered down in a high rise condo - check Floridian JMDL mini-festers party on and say "what hurricane?" - check Cousins who live part time in Grand Cayman are currently in London - check But just when I thought I could take a break and finish the check-off list, I see that Ivan is now tracking towards New Orleans! Considering all the crap I've bought on ebay, I consider myself pretty lucky. I don't do as much on half.com (which should really be called "nine-tenths.com") but have always been happy there. I did buy a record from a seller on the west coast, which was described in VG+ condition, turned out to be mega-scratched. Plus, like you say, the seller charged me 7.50 for Priority shipping, then sent it Media Mail for a buck & a half. When I emailed him expressing my discontent, he basically said that he was a college student trying to make money and that I could basically go Cheney myself. Ebay's feedback set-up is a farce and very ineffective. Most sellers wait until they RECEIVE feedback before posting any for buyers, so if you leave a seller a negative, you'll get a negative in return accompanied by a lie like "never received payment from this deadbeat" or some such. As a seller, I ALWAYS leave feedback for buyers as soon as I receive payment, and I did have a case where the buyer wasn't happy with a cd I sold him, so I refunded him completely and told him to keep the CD. In my opinion, life is too short to try and Cheney people over. Sorry you had a bad experience, Victor. Gayle was denounced at numerous church high school youth groups I attended, especially at camp one summer: sex without love, temporal sex, etc. etc. etc. etc. For myself, I thought she had beautiful hair and a great smile and it is a fun song to sing along. Never did know what the song was about though... We'll sing in the sunshine, We'll laugh every day, We'll sing in the sunshine, And I'll be on my way. I know I'll never love you, The cost of love's too dear. But though I'll never love you, I'll stay with you one year. And we can sing in the sunshine, We'll laugh everyday, We'll sing in the sunshine, And I'll be on my way. My daddy he once told me, "Hey, don't you love you any man. Just take what they may give you, And give but what you can." We'll sing in the sunshine, We'll laugh everyday, We'll sing in the sunshine, And I'll be on my way. I'll sing to you each morning, I'll kiss you every night. But darlin' don't cling to me, I'll soon be out of sight. My mother used to yell, "What is THAT dirge?" whenever I listened to Joni. Those were the days... when parents used to hate the music you played. The only group my kids listen to that I simply *cannot stand* is Maroon 5 - I just can't take that guys voice AT ALL! I was also in love with Cat Stevens and didja know you can now buy a DVD of his Majicat (or is it Majikat?) tour? I haven't got it, but believe I will. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 17:53:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: RE: Now Hair (now NJC) --- Kate Bennett wrote: > ... what > is shady pines? Q: Bill Clinton's daughter was named after "Chelsea Morning," a song written by which musician? Here I am going over my 5th graders Social Studies homework for spelling errors this evening. The bottom of the page wasn't completed and 'somehow' one of the questions caught my eye. I asked my son why it wasn't completed and he said it was just extra credit! Yep, I made him do it ........I said, "You better know who this is!" I'm happy to report he answered correctly!! Then he didn't spell Joni's name correctly so I made him erase it and do it over. He usually complains when I do this but this time he just laughed and whined, "Mom". Then it was spelled correctly but pretty sloppy. I told him he better not turn in any paper with Joni's name sloppy like that. He laughed again with, "Mommmm" as he 'perfected' her name on the paper! He knew there was no way he'd win this one. ha! Now me. Sure. Almost everyone who's done more than 20 transactions has a war story. If you want my take, I agree that he completely failed to pack that book responsibly. He should have offered some kind of refund but he wasn't professsional about packing so he had 2 strikes against him when he refused the refund. After he refused the refund you have a few options. Sometimes it's smart to not react immediately to a seller. If you let his email sit unanswered for 2 days till you cool off, (and he can collect his thoughts), you can remind him of his feedback rating and he may come around. There's no rule that you have to resolve things like this within 24 hours. You could take up some kind of formal greavance procedure with half.com. The nice thing about that is that a mediator is also telling him he can't ship a book responsibly without a padded envelope (at least) and shipping in one layer of newprint is absurd. The mediator would be urging him to protect his feedback, do the right thing, and offer a x% refund to keep the peace. I suspect that he's living from paycheck to paycheck and that he'd be able to make it right within a couple of weeks. Even if he delayed your refund, he still would have had a happy buyer. As a last resort, you give negative feedback. I say that's a last resort because when you do that, you give up your leverage. (The way feedbacks go on ebay, if an unhappy buyer leaves negative feedback, the seller almost always retaliates so now you, the injured party have been injured twice and you still don't have a nice book to show for it. One of the secrets of ebay is that either parties can begin a process to remove the negative feedback from both parties. That's one reason why everyone has >95% positive feedback.) But, let's get back to your book. You can read it. You warned your buddies about it. You got a bit of retribution and you have a story to tell. Now the thing to do it move on. Along with the excitement of getting a bargain is that occasionally you're gonna have a fight about feedback. It's like a cost of running with the big dogs. Sometimes the big dogs get bit too. You already know that most half.com sellers won't ship that poorly and that every man-made process is imperfect. My advice now is to 1. Buy whatever you have to buy to take down the wasp nest safely, 2. dump some drain cleaner down the sink, 3. submit your receipts as a credit against your rent on the 1st, and then 4. sit down and enjoy reading your new book! Don't worry. Be happy. (I stole that...) Lama PS, Just last week I sold a lens that I thought had a perfect mount attached. I described it like that and it sold. As I was boxing it up for shipping, I realized the mount had a flaw. I refunded $15 (for a mount worth $20 in like-new condition) by PayPal and wrote an email of apology. The refund and the apology got there several days before the lens mount. The buyer really appreciated the honesty. I told him if he'd rather return the lens and mount for a full refund, that would be okay with me but he'd have to cover the return postage. So, I'm gonna get positive feedback no matter what and, more importantly, I've held up my end. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 19:00:59 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: Now Hair (now NJC)/ other stuff too >> But one >> day she came down the stairs as I was wailing at the top of my lungs, >> "Masturbation can be fun, join the Holy Orgy Kama Sutra everyone." > > I *think* that might be the line that also caused my Dad to SWOOP in > and snatch that piece of vinyl away from me.
