Well, there are. There are different versions because of the color systems (NTSC in the US, PAL in Europe). The DVD also seems to come in different formats, i.e. without and with surround sound/DTS. Then the DVD's are also published with different region codes (1, 2). With that in mind, I wanted to fly a little flag for what I have christened the "I-poor", essentially a poor person's ipod. It's a Sony CD walkman, which does exactly what it says on the tin. However, it also comes with software called Atrac, which you can load to your PC, and which then enables you to copy CDs into it, compressing them to about one thirtieth of their regular size. You keep doing it til you've filled a 700mb CDR, hit the burn button, and hey presto! - you've got yourself a CD which contains 25-30 albums, which you can then play in the said walkman. It's nowhere as sophisticated as the ipod, but it does have some of the great functions, the best of which is shuffle, which will play any song from any album, in random order. I'm beginning to understand what ipodoholics get excited about, as this facility has certainly caused me to listen to individual songs in a new light. The one I've got in at the moment includes both Revolver and Pet Sounds, old favourites like Caetano Veloso and Suzanne Vega, recent stuff like Birth and Martina Topley-Bird, and obscurities like Elisabeth Valetti. It's like having a fab radio station ONLY playing music I like! When Tomorrow Never Knows popped up this morning, I was awestruck all over again at its strangeness, daring and utterly contemporary feel, as well as by the backwards guitar, the phased drumming and McCartney's AWESOME bass playing, even though he's on the same note virtually throughout! Anyway, that's enough of this technological love-in. Anyone wanting to live an i-pod like experience on a fraction of the budget could do a lot worse. Now me : Agreeing with both posts here and bringing up another point. It's a matter of record that the reason I have no command of my native Gaelic tongue is due entirely to the criminalisation of it's use by the then invading english. It seems everywhere you look in this world cultures are invaded and a scorched earth policy applied to cultural identities. Though it didn't help the Highland Scot's case that many Clans happily 'took the King's shilling' and were actively complicit in the demise of the culture and the subsequent diaspora. My grandparents were the last in my family to have used the old language and even then only to prevent the children from hearing what was being said. My great grandparents only spoke Gaelic. Not so very long ago. Alastair Cooke in one of his 'Letters from America' read out on the BBC, brought up the subject of English once being the dominant language in the USA and remarking on its passing in favour of Hispanic and the very many languages of immigrants to the USA. He speculated that there may be a loss of cohesion as a country consequent to this passing especially when there are and always have been concentrations of communities establishing themselves in the major towns and cities. His suggestion was that the adoption of the common language, the issue of citizenship and the process leading thereto was an estimable component in making the USA united and strong, assured in its sense of self. More darkly he reminded the listener that it takes so very little for groups of people to be divided one against the other - what Joni addresses in the subject of her song Borderline - that language being once a 'common' unifier and now being absent in that capacity to a greater or lesser extent might serve as basis enough for those seeking to ostracise. God knows for those so disposed little enough reason seems always to be enough. Of course the implicit threat therein is no reason at all to give up one's native tongue for fear of being more 'visible' coming from a different culture or origin. Rather it begs the question why once did it seem like learning to speak english on arriving in the USA was an aspiration and commitment whereas in recent years immigrants are now less disposed in that regard. I'd like to remind anyone still reading that so far I'm paraphrasing the thoughts of others though I cede that it rings bells I'm not sure I'm comfortable to hear. And it also has to be said that in the UK, and it's especially true in the schools, that immigrant children have increasingly poorer grasp of English in the spoken and especially in the written form even after a number of years in the country and in the education system. London always had an interesting mix of languages audible on the street if for no other reason than its being a tourist destination. These days since the European Union expanded and the former USSR disolved it is a positive Babel. I'm not knowledgeable in social anthropolgy but I can't help but wonder how such things will influence the viability of our society in the short to medium term. Why? Changes like that are made sometimes if retailers ask for it or if they receive complaints. And it looks like they changed distributors, at least in the US and took that opportunity to rerelease it with the cig removed. It's not a minor decision that Joni wouldn't be a part of unless she didn't want to be. It may have even been her choice. > I can't imagine Joni had a say in that. I can't imagine that she didn't. Artists a fraction of her stature have contractual approval of all of their packaging and it just wouldn't be worth it for the new distributor, (a division of Sony where she has a publishing deal) to do it when they don't even own the art and then have to change it again if she was angry. Last night he talked to kd lang about her latest album, "Hymns from the 49th Parallel". There was some Joni-content early on, but also some amusing other bits later (which I've also transcribed) and an explanation for why she doesn't wear shoes on stage! The conversation started out discussing the album: Rove: The plan for this was to be a Canadian songbook, wasn't it? kd: Yes Rove: Do you feel you've achieved that? kd: I think so. There's such amazing Canadian song-writers. So there's songs from Joni Mitchell and Neil Young and Leonard Cohen... And a lot of times, poeple don't realise they're Canadian. Rove: Do you feel pressure when you're performing someone's song who you've admired for so long? kd: It's ominous to cover someone like Joni Mitchell, because you know, she's basically a goddess to any singer-songwriter in the last 30 years. Yeah. But at the same time, they're such incredible songs that it's actually quite easy to get into them because the lyrics and melodies are so beautiful. Joni content ends here, for those Joni-only people! They then discussed her tour with Tony Bennett, and kd said they used to have long discussions about politics. Then the discussion moved on to a recent road-trip kd took up the West Coast of the US from Los Angeles to Vancouver. Rove: Now are there any interesting sites along the way? Like if you do a long strip of road in Australia, especially along the East Coast, we have big items - big novelty items. We've got a big pineapple and a big banana. Don't look at me confused, because I'm a little worried that after all the time you've been here, you've yet to see one of our novelty items! kd: I haven't seen the big banana. Rove: (tries to contain himself, and not laugh) kd: I set you up so good! Rove: That was like I just lobbed it to you, and you went "SMASH"! Rove: But is there any like interesting or amusing sites along the way or do you just stop and see beaches and all that kind of stuff? kd: You know, on the West Coast there's not so many big plastic fruit. No, it's just mostly coastline. They then moved on to talk about the timing of the trip... Rove: And was this recently? Was this around the time of the Olympics? Because I was interested to know whether you watched the Olympics? kd: I did manage to watch the girls in bikinis playing volleyball... Rove: Because that's what you wanted to do when you were younger, wasn't it? kd: Watch girls play volleyball in bikinis? Rove: "SMASH"! The conversation then moved on to other sports, including synchronised swimming, and the two performed an impromptu routine from their chairs! The final topic was kd touring with an orchestra, and Rove asked if the members of the orchestras minded kd performing in bare feet. She said she didn't know, but then went on to say: kd: It's just kind of comfortable to be on stage in bare feet, and you can feel the vibes through the stage. Do you want to know the truth? The truth is that I don't wear leather and it is so hard to find plastic shoes - it's insanely difficult to find plastic shoes! Rove suggested she by some rubber thongs (or flip-flops) while in Australia! Not much Joni content, but it was a very entertaining interview, all the same! Citizens at the rally will find out how to volunteer in a state at "high risk" for voting rights violations, be trained on the spot as an Election Protection volunteer, and plan to attend a follow-up training led by experienced civil rights groups who will be leading efforts in the field on November 2. Its title is a parody of the title of Ray Bradbury's great science fiction novel, Fahrenheit 451. This temperature 4510 Fahrenheit, is the combustion point, incidentally, of paper, of which books are composed. The hero of Bradbury's novel is a municipal worker whose job is burning books. And on the subject of burning books: I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles. So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries. And still on the subject of books: Our daily sources of news, papers and TV, are now so craven, so unvigilant on behalf of the American people, so uninformative, that only in books can we find out what is really going on. I will cite an example: House of Bush, House of Saud by Craig Unger, published near the start of this humiliating, shameful blood-soaked year. In case you haven't noticed, and as a result of a shamelessly rigged election in Florida, in which thousands of African Americans were arbitrarily disenfranchised, we now present ourselves to the rest of the world as proud, grinning, jut-jawed, pitiless war lovers, with appallingly powerful weaponry and unopposed. In case you haven't noticed, we are now almost as feared and hated all over the world as the Nazis were. With good reason. In case you haven't noticed, our unelected leaders have dehumanized millions and millions of human beings simply because of their religion and race. We wound and kill 'em and torture 'em and imprison 'em all we want. Piece of cake. In case you haven't noticed, we also dehumanize our own soldiers, not because of their religion or race, but because of their low social class. Send 'em anywhere. Make 'em do anything. Piece of cake. The O'Reilly Factor. So I am a man without a country, except for the librarians and the Chicago-based magazine you are reading, In These Times. Before we attacked Iraq, the majestic New York Times guaranteed that there were weapons of mass destruction there. Albert Einstein and Mark Twain gave up on the human race at the end of their lives, even though Twain hadn't even seen World War I. War is now a form of TV entertainment. And what made WWI so particularly entertaining were two American inventions, barbed wire and the machine gun. Shrapnel was invented by an Englishman of the same name. Don't you wish you could have something named after you? Like my distinct betters Einstein and Twain, I now am tempted to give up on people too. And, as some of you may know, this is not the first time I have surrendered to a pitiless war machine. My last words? "Life is no way to treat an animal, not even a mouse." Napalm came from Harvard. Veritas! Our president is a Christian? So was Adolf Hitler. What can be said to our young people, now that psychopathic personalities, which is to say persons without consciences, without a sense of pity or shame, have taken all the money in the treasuries of our government and corporations and made it all their own? ) 2004 In These Times|Privacy Policy|Powered by Expression Engine|Syndicate/RSS http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/i_love_you_madame_librarian/ - ------------------------ Yahoo! And did you check out the comments on the rest of the page? This list seems SO polite (including every flame war we've EVER had - including those REALLY fiery ones) in comparison! It just proves Joni fans are far more tolerant - not to mention articulate and better mannered! - than a lot of other so-called fans out there, despite our differences!
