I love it and I was feeling really happy about its data until about a week ago. It had been looking really positive for Kerry until the Republican Convention started (at one point, Kerry was up to 320 electoral votes). But this is normal, I think, and if Kerry keeps putting out powerful messages like the those in his speech at midnight in Ohio, I think things will again start to look good for him. The guy running the site uses the very latest polls and also often makes interesting comments and analysis. He seems to know something about statistics. Deb, look at the graphs there showing the projected outcome based on the polls so far. There is one map in particular that is based on these projection lines (I think it's called Projected Map). As we get closer to November, this map will be more accurate. A place I found yesterday that I really like is called: www.us-election.org You can vote for a Presidental ticket there right now and you don't even have to be an American! The idea is to show not only what the USA thinks about the candidates, but what the world thinks about them. Tell your friends!!! BTW, dear(!) Kate, I only took a few snippets from Kerry's speech that night. I think he said a whole lot of other good stuff, too. Dear Everybody - Please read the book "Bush Must Go: The Top Ten Reasons Why George Bush Doesn't Deserve A Second Term", by Bill Press. Better yet, send it to your Republican friends! It's a very powerful book - very clear, very concise, and very disturbing. Kris Kristofferson has just re-released two CDs, recorded in the 1980s, that are remarkably plainspoken rants against the kind of conservative American domestic and foreign policy that the Republicans celebrated in New York this week, the same week in which Canadian expatriate and former 1960s flower power poster child Joni Mitchell released The Beginning Of Survival (Universal Chronicles), a collection of pieces recorded from the 1980s through the oughts that she calls "commentaries on the world in which we live." The songs here - including "The Recurring Dream," "Dog Eat Dog," "The Beat Of Black Wings" and "Tax Free" - are a surprisingly effective indictment of the rampant self-interest fueling Bush's new America, a timely alarm. The package is enhanced by several of her recent paintings, an essay and native American leader Chief Seattle's powerful mid-1800s letter to the White House advocating respect for the environment and the lives of all creatures in the formulation of government policy. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Sep 2004 10:18:34 -0400 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: please cheer me up NJC PC The more I think about it, the more I think that it was probably a good thing for Kerry to wait until after the RNC to go on the offensive. One of the problems with the the LA Times poll is the first question they ask is "are you a registered voter?" One of my friends got this call and replied "not yet" as he plans to register on the day of the election when he votes, which is allowed in Wisconsin. Well, the phone call was terminated immediately.....so the conclusion is there are plenty of people who plan to vote for Kerry who were not included in the LA Times poll. I think it is safe to say that conservative republicans are already registered here, which would tend to skew the poll results. I feel so bad not to exactly remember, but I'm thinking that's it) So It was great to meet these folks and while the conversation was all over the place topic-wise....I guess I shouldn't be too amazed the most animated and passionate parts of the convo were about...... ummmm...take a a guess. MS. JONI MITCHELL!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!! I saw a couple of folks from other tables even turn and look at us a little cuz the Joni talk was, as I said, kind of animated and it was passionate and fun. I was kinda ready to take it up another notch and do some moon-howling, but the rest of the group wanted to go to the Festival Express flick - which I want a report on, guys! and I felt I couldn't sit still..so I went on home and they went (presumably) to the flick. Anyway, just wanted to give a quick report. I feel like I have some nice new friends, and Jerry and Bob are like 2 new nice "bros." for me. A friend who was visiting from California during DNC mentioned this as as ray of hope. And since I used to do polling for Jimmy Carter's polster Pat Caddell during the 1980 election, I know that this is correct. When the person called says that s/he didn't vote in the last election, the procedure is then "Thank you for your time. Goodbye." So this practice, which was developed to make polls more accurate to the final outcome of an election, may actually be leading to innacurate predictions for the outcome of this particular race. - --Smurf ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Sep 2004 09:56:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: the wind is in from Africa NJC and it IS getting gusty, even over here in Tampa! I just read the TIME Poll you were referring to and it appears that (unlike some of the other polls) they also poll "likely" voters. But I'm confused at their methodology: http://www.time.com/time/press_releases/article/0,8599,692562,00.html "Methodology: The TIME Poll was conducted August 31 September 2 by telephone among a random sample of 1,316 adults, including 1,128 reported registered voters and 926 likely voters. The margin of error for registered voters is +/- 3% points, and +/- 4% points for likely voters. Schulman, Ronca, & Bucuvalas (SRBI) Public Affairs conducted the poll, and more complete results are attached." 1128 registered voters PLUS 926 likely voters does not EQUAL 1316 adults. Am I looking at this completely wrong? Can someone enlighten me? Mia _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement? It was a lot of fun meeting you and Jim & Addie (thanks Jim for the wonderful PMG compilation set, I listened to some of it today and it's great), and seeing Cindy again and of course I had to bring Jerry along against my better judgement, but he more or less behaved himself. The movie was great! I had NO IDEA this event had happened until Kerry published the article about it. Some great footage of Janis - wow - we were actually applauding after the Janis footage. Some of the hippie-jam clips were dull & dated to me, but the Band stuff was magnificent as was the Buddy Guy stuff. Really enjoyable and fine quality. Of course watching it with fellow music fans made it that much more fun. I know that you'll enjoy it, Em. Thanks again for meeting and greeting last night - a great time.
