It doesn't matter what happens after that as far as the continuation of the line goes, so things like deterioration of vision, hearing - anything, can happen. There's no genetic drive to filter anything out. Back in the wild, if you got poor vision before you reproduced, you would be unlikely to make it to maturity. You would be less likely to see the predetor, or the food you were looking for etc. and your fitter collegues gene's would be more likely to make it through to the next generation than yours. Thanks to the miracles of modern science, not only did I make it to maturity (that IS a relative term - I may be old, but am not sure if I'm a grown-up), but I also managed to reproduce. Take THAT, Mother Nature! If my kids get my eyesight and my ex's hearing, the species is doomed. > Great to see you again at the Fest Catherine, > (through my sneaky contact > lenses ;) It was great seeing you too, Martin. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2004 08:02:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: i've gone Bi njc --- colin wrote: > Being short sighted, i had no idea I'd also still go > longsighted in my 40's! > I wear a pair of half moon glasses on achain around > my neck when I wear > contacts. Colin, doesn't it suck? My eyes are very sensitive to light, too, and I'm also astigmatic and have poor night vision as well. I'd rather not drive when it's dark if I don't have to. I started wearing contact lenses again after about 5 years of not wearing them. In that time, I developed the long-sightedness so was unpleasantly surprised to discover I would have to wear reading glasses. I have one pair that I wear on a chain just like an old granny. After starting to wear contacts again, everything looks so much bigger, which is very cool. My dog, a papillon, suddenly looks like a border collie. I've been complaining about quality, and everything else, since my earliest youth & my son is taking after me - what a bunch of grouches! Grouchiness can be fun but when I catch myself complaining about the price of a loaf of bread, I scare myself. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2004 06:02:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: strange email stuff, can anyone shed some light? Dear SCJoniguy (and anyone else bringing their first child to college): I meant to write earlier about this but got swept away in the craziness of the new academic year. I was going to tell you that it's okay to cry when you drop your precious child off at college. If you DON'T cry there is something wrong with you! It's the Circle Game in real life -- YOUR life -- and it's a big milestone. I swear that (for me, anyway) letting go is the hardest part of parenting. One of my colleagues just brought her son to school in PA and said it was the day she's been "dreading for years" (she wore sunglasses the next day for our first day of classes); a male cousin of mine cried for a whole week every night at dinner (and his second child was getting very scared). It's bittersweet, I know, but the SWEET part is that you've done a good job as a parent, you love your kid like there's no tomorrow, and you are much much happier to be dropping your kid off at college than at Fort Something-or-Other! Good luck to your "Great Nate", and may his dreams NEVER lose their grandeur coming true! Peace, Patti P.S. I now understand why, when saying goodbye to me outside my dorm in 1972, my Dad hugged me harder than he ever had in his life. He was pleading with me, BEGGING me: "Please, Poocho, please, be GOOD. JUST BE GOOD!" (And there I was thinking: "Okay, okay. Just go now, Dad! Just go! I wanna try out my new bong!") _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. I was a bigger Tim Weisberg fan than I was a Fogelberg fan; 2. Netherlands was so damn good." As for the decline of Fogelberg and Weisberg, I think "The Innocent Age" (which opened with "Nexus") that followed "Twin Sons..." was probably not indicative of waning commercial success. It was both a big package (double record set) AND a big seller due to "Leader of the Band" and "Same Auld Lang Syne." I rather liked the orchestral arrangement and recording on "Ghosts" although the vocals were a bit over baked and the inevitable wear of the inner grooves of the vinyl pressing didn't do it any favors. Would that the less is more aesthetic of "Home Free" had been employed, the quality of his songwriting may have been more apparent. If you're in the mood, give "Hickory Grove" and "Wysteria" a spin. You'll be shocked at how satisfying and beautiful they remain. I never heard Fogelberg & Weisberg's sequel, "No Resemblance Whatsoever" from 1995. Interesting how nobody has ever mentioned how similar the cover photo from "Netherlands" (Fogelberg's 4th album) is to "Blue" (Mitchell's 4th album). Also, the paintings included within bear an interesting resemblence to Mitchell's marker and gouache works from the early 70s, like the LOTC cover. Clearly homage was intended. There's a way to go yet before the election, so I'm not letting this Repub convention of lies make me too nervous. And I think Kerry will be getting tougher. Supposedly voters are turned off by negative campaigns, but once one side's gone negative (and the Repubs did that long ago), the entire campaign is seen as negative, so it's not going to work for the Democrats to try to stay above the dirt. It looks like Bush has solid support but the truth is filtering out. More people are learning about things like the way anyone going to a rally for Bush or Cheney has to sign a loyalty oath that includes saying they'll vote for Bush/Cheney before they're allowed into the rally, so of course everyone there is enthusiastic and that's what people see on tv. All of those "regular citizen" questions are vetted beforehand, too, so the whole show of enthusiasm for Bush is fake. Info about all of that manipulation is getting out. It doesn't sit well with people who love their freedom. One good sign for the Democrats is that the Repubs at their convention are playing to their base, and my thought is if they don't have their base on their side already, they're in trouble (good!). And how about that quote from Bush saying we can't win the war on terror? A little truth slipped out! I'd like to see that clip used in ads the way the Repubs have used some of Kerry's quotes, completely out of context, just a blurb to overwhelm the bigger picture. Why is that Bush can say something so negative and the press lets him "fix" it, explain it away, and yet Kerry gets relentlessly skewered by ads using some of his phrases out of context? This supposed liberal media is a joke. Not only are most media companies owned by a few big contributors to the Repubs, but it's also scary the way this administration is so vindictive. If a reporter does ask something that annoys the president (and that's really any question of substance), then that person (and whatever paper or news program that person represents) is no longer allowed to have access to the president. That kind of blackballing really puts a damper on getting the truth out. > And I have to share this, because it just hit me on the head the other day > like a ton o' bricks...what has never made sense to me is why Bush commands > such a following, it actually seems to defy logic. This is, after all, the same crowd that makes > reality TV a hit and thinks that attacking and occupying a country that posed > no threat to us is an appropriate reaction to what happened on 9/11. Yep, keep the message simple and then say it over and over (and have all the Bushies say the same words on every news show) and then watch people repeat those exact same words as though they're original thoughts. That's why even after the bipartisan 9/11 commission report, which said there was no connection between Saddam and al Qaeda, Cheney kept saying in speeches that there WAS a connection, just lying right out. All it takes for too many people here is to suck in what's said and not look any further. We're a consumer culture ruled by advertisers. In addition to making excellent use of advertising tricks, the Bushies also make excellent use of the anti-intellectualism that's so prized here. It hit me on the head a few hours after watching Arnold Schwartzenegger say he became a Republican because he was so impressed with Nixon (and the convention crowd cheered at Nixon's name), that Arnold grew up in Austria when the Nazis were in charge, his father was a Nazi, so of course the Republican message would sound good to him. It must be sounding even better to him these days with the "be afraid" manipulation, the lessening of civil liberties, the control of the press, the heightened nationalism, and all the "we're so tough" military talk (mostly from men who didn't serve). These Repubs now in charge are tending toward fascism. People think of Nazis and right away jump to the killing of millions of Jews, and say oh no that couldn't happen here! And I don't think it could either. However, anyone saying that could never happen here needs to keep in mind that Hitler wasn't obvious about his plans. He didn't say he was going to kill six million Jews, he set up the environment where it could happen, where it made sense to the Nazis in charge for that to happen, and we need to be aware of the same steps toward fascism being taken in the U.S. I'd stopped worrying about all of that, but hearing the crowd cheer Arnold, the Nixon-loving movie star, brings it to the fore again. Kerry may not be our salvation, but at least he'll slow > down the out-of-control vehicle. I agree with that. What bothers me most is the way the Repubs are manipulating working people in order to get votes. It's nothing new, but with the numbers showing that 1.3 million more people IN THE LAST YEAR are in poverty, the Bushies still talk about how they're on working people's side, and they do it in a way that too many working people believe them. It's evil behavior. Bush recently said at one of those fake rallies that "if the tax cuts are rolled back then those wealthy people will be going to their financial advisers and you [the working people] will end up paying more taxes." [Be afraid.] That is evil manipulation. To make up for lost revenue because of those tax cuts benefiting the wealthiest 1%, sales taxes are higher, school tuitions are higher, working people are already paying more taxes. It's just that the Repubs are hiding them. And wealthy people do have, always have had, always will have, financial advisors whose only job is to protect that person's wealth so they pay as little tax as possible, no matter what the official tax rate is. They have ways of protecting their wealth that working people don't have a clue about (think the rich -- and that includes Bush and Cheney -- are going to advertise it?). The way these Repubs have made people who live paycheck to paycheck (if they even have a job) worry about the rich paying too many taxes just astounds me. I'll say it again... it is evil behavior.
