Dark Cafe Days: Foiled Again sings Joni Mitchell is BACK! All of us in Foiled Again really loved the support we got from many of you on the list when you came to see our show last April and we wanted to make sure that you knew we were coming back with another run of the show - and to give all the non-Chicagoland people plenty of warning so they can come in and see us. We're gonna be playing The Speakeasy Supperclub (www.speakeasysupperclub.com) on October 17 & 24th at 8 PM. I'll post more details later - but hope to see some of you there again - and meet some of you for the first time. Your descriptions made me feel like I was almost there. I just have one question tho. You wrote : "a snippet of Joni from the 'Pink Dress Concert' playing A Case of You finished the presentation." Did Joni actually play ACOY at the Pink Dress Concert? I don't remember this. The only dulcimer songs I recall at the Pink Dress Concert are California and All I Want. The reason I ask is if this exists, I'll have to form my own little search party to hunt down a copy of this footage! Tangential JC On Thursday, 26 August 2004, Steven Polifka wrote (in part, referring to a visit to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame): Among the numerous great props and costumes were costumes by Devo, Tina Turner's outfits, Prince, Elton John and too many others to mention. Did you know that one of the Rolling Stones (I forget which) played mountain dulcimer on 3 early Stones songs? His dulcimer was in a case with other Stones memorabilia. Of all the displays we saw, our fave was the Mary Wilson Supreme Collection- on the fourth floor. She saved all her costumes and memorabilia- it was FABULOUS!!! (LOL!) And there was a loaf of the Supremes White Bread- I kid you not! We laughed about that one for a while... Finally, We found the California area, with a few Joni Items fitted in neatly next to and with CSN&Y. All of the items were from Joel Bernstein's private collection. They included: A black and white pic (about 8 by 10) of Joni playing the dulcimer which I have never seen before... (Very nice pic! Her hair was real long and it looked like she was sitting on a porch infront of a house.) And now, me: Who knew that Cyndi Lauper plays mountain dulcimer, as does the fiddler in her backing band? Tuesday, I heard and saw live, for my first time, Cyndi Lauper at The Grand Opera House, Wilmington, Del. The opening act was Jennifer Marks with backing band, and late in the show, Jennifer and band joined Cyndi and band to perform "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Cyndi played an electrified mountain dulcimer for several songs -- "Time After Time" began with only dulcimer accompaniment, and the bass guitar and fiddle were gradually added - -- and the fiddler played the dulcimer on one number where Cyndi didn't. I rate that concert one of the best pop concerts I have attended, and I've been to more than my share. Our office is being phased out and several people that I have worked with for many years (one as long as 20) worked their last day today. It was emotionally draining. Anyway I listened to part of 'Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun' on the way home ('Sketches of China' was a good emotional release) and then needed something to soothe me so I popped in 'Hymns of the 49th Parallel'. Somebody commented about k. d.'s changing the lyric in the last verse of 'A Case of You'. At first it sounded a bit awkward to me but now that I've gotten used to the sound of this version, I kinda like it and I think I understand why she made that particular choice. Being a well-known out lesbian, if she had left the lyric as 'go to him, stay with him if you can', she would have gotten all kinds of flak for copping out. Plus she may have felt she could not sing the original lyric with the same emotional honesty. So she could have sung 'go to her, stay with her if you can' but if you sing or say that out loud it sounds wrong. The word 'him' has a definite consonant sound at the end of it that gives a clear separation from it and the next word. The 'r' at the end of 'her' is a soft sound that doesn't sound as clear or crisp. The words come out sounding slurred together. So I think 'Go with it, stay with it' is a nice choice. It skirts the gender issue but doesn't damage the meaning of the lyric. I have a cd box set called 'Club Verboten' that is a collection of 'music composed or embraced by the gay and lesbian culture'. There are two songs on the first disk from the 1930s and 40s that are sung by mainstream male vocalists. One is called 'He's My Secret Passion' and the other is 'He Wears A Pair of Silver Wings'. Both are love songs, obviously written with a woman's point of view in mind but these versions do not change a single pronoun. The booklet that comes with the box set makes the following comment: "the explanation for this could be that from the twenties to the 40s music publishers often forbade any form of lyric changes in their songs, including gender". K. d. doesn't have to worry about such constraints now and I find it interesting that, in this 'case', changing the gender of the lyric would actually make it sound funny or even wrong to some ears. The two examples I cited above, however, produce that impression by *not* changing the gender. I wasn't sure how I felt about k. d.'s 'Jericho' when I first heard it but I am really loving it now. I think it is a very, very difficult song to sing. There are a lot of words and some very tricky turns to the melody. Joni's writing got very wordy toward the end of the 70s and I would think some of those songs from 'DJRD' and 'Hejira' would be very difficult for an interpretive singer to put their own stamp on. (Perhaps another reason for shortening 'stay with him if you can' to 'stay with it'?) K. d. does an admirable job. She just keeps getting better and better, imo. Em made the comment that there are no 'teeth' in this cd and I disagree. The voice is reined in and elegantly controlled but the power is still there. I love k. d.'s earlier stuff too, especially 'Shadowland' and 'Absolute Torch and Twang' and she's thrilling when she lets the throttle out on that powerhouse of a voice. But I love the way she's singing now. Years of listening to Billie Holiday have taught me that vocal power doesn't necessarily equate to emotional power. Subtlety can be just as effective. Sometimes more effective, imo. This concludes the sporadic ramblings of that nutty drone in the northwest. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Mark E. in The Land of Bigfoot (ah seen 'im! ah swear ah did!) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2004 21:35:02 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: IMHO Today I received 3 things in one box from Amazon.com, my dealer of choice in the land of no book or record stores. One was my copy of TBOS, one was the DVD of Refige of the Roads (which I had never seen before) and the last was the first CD release of an album I've had on vinyl for many years: "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads" with a lot of bonus cuts. So-- here is how my day went with my new goodies. I put on TBOS first and I just couldn't f**in' tolerate it. I had to quit listening. After I did some work in the evening I put on the Talking Heads CDs and they were fabulous--live performances from their prime with LOTS OF EXTRAS!!! Even though the 2 lp set had never ever been on a CD the people involved in producing it knew the fans need that little extra incentive to buy it again. SO--in the evening I watched Refuge of the Roads, which, as I stated above I had never seen before. It was touching & moving even with some cheesy 80's video and production techiniques on display. It was cheaper than TBOS (which has artwork far cheesier than the video production on the 80s-vintage DVD) and it was moving and genuine---not phony like TBOS. I suppose I don't regret buying any of these, but I'll listen to/ watch Refuge and The Name of this Band is Talking Heads again and most likely again. TBOS will remain an unattractive coaster with--yes--a ghoulish hand. So--that's my 75 cents worth. THAT would be a ballsy decision for k.d. to make, as would "go with her, stay with her if you can", which has an obvious interpretation and again puts a unique and honest spin on the lyric. I think she's not giving her audience enough credit. The ONLY "cop-out" choice was the one she made..."go with it, stay with it", which really means NOTHING and dilutes the power of the lyric on any level as it has only a vague non-comitting interpretation. As a straight guy hearing it, it sounds to me like a cop-out. But don't get me wrong; I love the recording, I just don't agree with her choice as concerns this lyric.
