May I offer one correction? In this passage, "And impassive Norwegian blood and then I've got Native blood through the Norwegian blood, Sammy blood." ... the word transcribed as "Sammy" should be "Sami." This is the name, in their own language, of the nomadic people of the Scandinavian countries and northwestern Russia we used to call "Lapps" or "Laplanders." At least, that is the conclusion I draw from the word in context; I have no independent evidence to back it up. Tim Spong Dover, Del., U.S.A. The decision model was more > about the fears that everyone had about how it would go... > fear of unbearable traffic jams, fear of some sort of > terrorist strike on our city, fear of the unknown. There are plenty of fears being played upon these days, and I'm doing my best to ignore all the "be afraid" messages. I'm not worried about a terrorist strike during the convention. There's too many cops around, and too many nervous people looking everybody over. The mass murderers will wait until it's another sunny normal day and they'll target people just trying to get to work and do what they have to do to support their family. My main hope for the convention is that there are enough demonstrators here that the media will report on the peacefully passionate protests so no one is tempted to be violent just to get the media's attention. I think any news of violent protests will help the Republicans. I'm hoping no one gets hurt or taunts the cops or breaks windows or anything like that, and that the police stay calm, too. It really is a scary thing when they charge into the crowd on horses. The place for the biggest rally, on Sunday, still hasn't been decided upon. The organizers said no to the West Side Highway and still want to gather in Central Park and the city is still saying no to that, so there's a showdown set to happen. The organizers first put in for a permit over a year ago, so it's outrageous that nothing's been worked out yet. The only plan right now is for the crowd to walk past Madison Square Garden and I don't know how 250,000 people are going to peacefully fit into that area or where they're going to walk to. If they end up gathering in Central Park, which is just up the road from Madison Square Garden, does that mean all the protesters, and everyone in the park walking their dog or having a picnic, get thrown into jail? Sounds to me like a lot of people behaving badly. One source of friction and anger toward cops in recent protests (or any huge gathering these days) is the way they corralled people into big pens made from interlocking steel fences, with only one narrow exit for the hundreds of people packed into each pen. The courts have said they can't do that anymore, and they can't search everyone's bags anymore either. Even without that friction, there will still probably be plenty of arrests. Some groups are planning to block intersections by sitting down in the street, and they'll probably be loaded into police vans and taken to jail. There's a big group of volunteer lawyers ready to get them out of jail or give whatever legal help the protesters need. It's a wild time a comin' to the big bad city. > I said to whomever asked me where I was "going" because > surely I was going to leave that it was an historic occasion > and Boston's my city and there was no way I was going to leave. Makes perfect sense to me. The idea of experiencing major events in your own town through tv broadcasts only seems sterile to me, safe maybe but not very interesting. Or so I say now. I may be looking for a way out of town if it starts to feel too dangerous to be here. > I got to go to the convention, and as I walked around I got to > give directions to folks with a big smile on my face. But then, > they were there for the candidate I hope will win. It would be so different if the Democrats were coming here. I'd enjoy that! I don't remember any turmoil about having the Democratic convention here in 1992 when Clinton was nominated but, of course, that was before the first WTC bombing and things were different here in many ways then. > Last weekend I went to New Hampshire to campaign for Kerry-Edwards. > I have never in my life done something like that, and I did it > because I'm feel desperate for our country's future. I'm feeling the same and recently signed up to help with calls, emails or maybe visits, probably to a swing state. I've been donating money all along to different groups and now it feels like it's time to do more. My first assignment is making calls to help with voter registration. The 1984 election is the only one I've helped in, when Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro were the candidates against Reagan. I didn't have any responsibility then and spent time stuffing envelopes. It was very disorganized. So this is different. Finally jumping in makes me a little queasy but it's exciting, too. > My job was to canvass undecided voters to determine if > they are still undecided so that when the "real" campaign > starts in September they can more precisely target their > efforts. ... Victor NP: CSN Long Time Coming Victor Johnson New cd "Parsonage Lane" available now Produced by Chris Rosser at Hollow Reed Studios, Asheville http://www.waytobluemusic.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 23:52:51 -0700 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: CSN (njc) Went to see CSN Tuesday night in Atlanta. We got in free-all we had to do was hand out samples from Whole Foods for an hour before the concert. There's always too many people talking at Chastain but aside from that it was a great show. They opened with Carry On and then played Marakesh Express(Nash said to imagine you'd just smoked a big fat one and was on the train to Morocco) and 49 Bye Byes (Stills said he couldn't remember what they were). Then Crosby said he was going to play a new song and said something like "I know what you all are thinking.... it's going to be a ballad and its going to be in some weird tuning and afterwards you're going to think that in the world was he doing. But not this time. This is a rocker." They played many new songs from the new Crosby Nash album which I really liked, particularly the new Nash songs Lay Me Down and I Surrender which Nash dedicated for a fellow he had met at book signing the night before. They also played a song that David's son wrote with some help from Nash called Don't Dig Here, about Yucca Mountain which was an awesome song. They really didn't make any references to either Bush or Kerry though at one point, they said one of the songs was for whoever ended up in the White House. Other highlights were Southern Cross, Helplessly Hoping, Almost Cut My Hair, and Deja Vu. Near the end they played particularly good renditions of Wooden Ships and a smoking Woodstock. I was thinking to myself, that's where I'll be in a couple of days. The last song they played was Teach Your Children. While overall they sounded great, I noticed that Stills seemed to have a little harder time sounding as sharp as he used to and didn't look so good healthwise. The last time I saw just CSN(and not Y) was 17 years ago in Roanoke, VA. Seems hard to believe it was that long ago. Re: > They played many new songs from the new Crosby Nash album which I really > liked, particularly the new Nash songs Lay Me Down and I Surrender These were written by James Raymond (Croz' son) and Mark Cohn, respectively. Don't Dig Here also lists Russ Kunkel as co-writer. I'm guessing the rocker Croz was talking about was "They Want It All", his salute to Enron, also from the new Crosby-Nash album. I was a bit surprised at how many outside writers they used on it, compared to the older albums that they wrote themselves. My first hit on it was that it sounds really nice, but the songs are mostly weak-maybe something to Joni's "songwriting by committee" theory. I've only heard it once though, so may revise my assessment. >>>>>Have a wonderful 'Fest, Victor and everyone!!!!<<<<< RR, helping to hold down the fort ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2004 01:36:30 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Shadows and Light DVD Justin, Yeah, I had the Hong Kong S&L DVD and the USA DVD. I have a small (20") TV and I don't see any difference at all. It looks to me like the concert footage was captured on video, not film. On my set, it doesn't look like a faded film print. I don't have a high end DVD player (or an external decoder like Jerry Notaro) but I'm picky about sound. I'm very picky. I don't hear any difference at all between the Hong Kong DVD and the recently liscenced US version. What the new DVD has that the Hong Kong version lacks is a photo gallery by Joel Bernstein. I bought the new dvd and sold the old one but that's just me. I can't recommend replacing one with the other as a great value for your dollar. I just did it to keep my Joni Mitchell collection up to date. If you lack any of these: LoTC, FTR, Blue, C&S, THOSL, MoA, Hejira, DJRD, DED, or WTRF, I'd grow in that direction first. The word is "Sami", pronounced with an "a" like in "bar" and "i" like in "bee". Speaking of Sami culture, there is a great singer with a great voice you may wish to check out: Mari Boine. Only a few of her albums seem to be available in the US. I recommend trying out anything that is sung in her own language, not English, i.e. stuff like "Gula Gula". moni ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2004 #358 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
