Just to see the colorful makeup on the women! I get such a kick out of it. If their makeup (and clothing) were any brighter, it might burn thru my retina, LOL! Thanks for sharing that Crosby quote, Deb. Joni always looked so much younger than her true age without the makeup; but with the makeup, she always looked so much older than her true age. Perhaps with the heavier makeup, she was trying to portray herself as an experienced artist with much wisdom, and that way the music industry would take her seriously. She appeared to be a tougher cookie then. When she lost the makeup along side falling in with the hippie aesthetic of the time, I think that during the Graham Nash years, Joni may have been trying to reveal a more sweet and innocent version of herself, perhaps keeping in line with how Nash felt about her. (She was also making it to the bigger stages then and could hide behind the sweetness so people would protect her rather than hurt her.) I think that being painted into such a corner left her feeling restricted and unable to grow, which possibly contributed to her leaving Nash and later having her little Shamanic conversion. Just my .02 cents. And yes, "For the Turnstiles" is great. Such an edge it has to it. Neil did some really REALLY raw things. And I find that so refreshing. Like a biting cold wind. As opposed to warm and fuzzy. I'm trying now to make friends with kd lang's cover of "After the Goldrush". I feel it completely cuts that song's balls off. Even that other cover of it that used to be on the radio in the 70's (forget who that was), had more of a bite than kd's. sad sad sad.... Some of the other cuts are better though, imho. Sorry, got off the subject there, a bit. Em ps Mia enjoyed your comments about the outrageous 60's makeup on the Ed Sullivan show..I saw an example of that just this weekend. I chose to stay in Boston during the Democrat's convention, which, given my liberal leanings was an easier decision to make because it didn't feel like an alien invasion. The decision model was more about the fears that everyone had about how it would go...fear of unbearable traffic jams, fear of some sort of terrorist strike on our city, fear of the unknown. I said to whomever asked me where I was "going" because surely I was going to leave that it was an historic occasion and Boston's my city and there was no way I was going to leave. Glad I didn't, especially since it turned out to be the easiest week Boston has seen in years and years. I got to go to the convention, and as I walked around I got to give directions to folks with a big smile on my face. But then, they were there for the candidate I hope will win. Last weekend I went to New Hampshire to campaign for Kerry-Edwards. I have never in my life done something like that, and I did it because I'm feel desperate for our country's future. My job was to canvass undecided voters to determine if they are still undecided so that when the "real" campaign starts in September they can more precisely target their efforts. We had to go to a particular address, determine if we were talking to the right person, ask them, "If the election were held today would you vote for George Bush or John Kerry?" I had to stop myself from asking how in the world they could possibly still be undecided (many are, or are reluctant to say that they know who they are voting for). We were instructed to be polite and thank the person who declares him/herself for Bush. Hardest thing in the world to do, given how passionately I feel. One undecided guy and I (and my companion) got into a dialogue about his leanings toward Bush...his biggest complaint? Kerry has no charisma. Oy. I think Joni likes a little touch of glamour every now and then. Remember: She don't like my kick-pleat skirt She don't like my eyelids painted green She don't like me staying out late in my high-heel shoes Living for that rock and roll dancing scene and also But even on the scuffle the cleaner's press was in my jeans And any eye for detail caught a little lace along the seams But she ultimately concludes: The streets were never really mine Not mine, not mine these glamour gowns Personally, I've never liked seeing her in full makeup. It makes her look hard somehow. Her face is so naturally interesting. Certainly the cheekbones don't need rouge to emphasize them. She has very full lips and they are only exaggerated by the bright red lipstick she usually wears. And the eyes need nothing. They are deep-set, large and quite beautiful without painting the lids green or any other color. The fresh-faced hippy girl look was quite becoming to her. Just my opinion.
