I don't know...still thinking about it. I just listened to kd's take, listening based on your thoughts, and I agree that it's warmer. I just spun Joni's version, and damn it's awesome. If only kd had Jaco...and Guerin's drum work on the track is also not to be readily dismissed, a series of fills and accents, just wonderful. Then there's Joni's swooping vocal, that sound that the creator has given only to her. I'm just thankful I don't have to really choose, both tracks are A+++ for different reasons. I spoke yesterday to the crazy Cuban and Jimmy for a few minutes but then the cell vanished. They are all right except for the fact that the Cuban was trying to kill Jimmy, but I will let them explain when their power comes back on. I have not yet tried to call them today, but will a little later. Looks like they have dodged a bullet, but the nearby Sannibel and Captiva Islands and points a little north from there look like hell. And miraculously it didn't come here. But it went somewhere else and now other people's lives are uprooted and in some cases destroyed. So, its like trouble won't be diffused, it just goes "elsewhere". But we, here in the Tampa area are HUGELY relieved. It put us through changes and it didn't even come here. My father and stepmother ran away from their home in a low lying area by Tampa Bay, and Charley ended up going right to where they went, which was Kissimmee. They spent the night huddled in a hotel room with no power. But thankfully they are fine. Hoping the other Florida listers are ok too. I'm glad we don't have to choose either. I'm also glad that kd doesn't have Jaco. For me, Jaco and Joni are like two aliens who never sounded better than when they were together, at least that's the way I hear it now. I don't think I'd want Jaco on this song without Joni's guitar. His bass would mean a different mix, perhaps one that isn't as much of a singer's mix as kd's is now. Just thinking out loud...still taking it in... And you know today is exactly a year since the big blackout we had here in Ontario as well as New York State (and a few areas I might have forgotten.) The symbolism may be too obvious or easy for some, but this is a mass market release after all.
