Hello, loves! Like our dear Emiliano (Buenos dias, querido amigo!), I too am back from a long vacation (visiting parents and 3 brothers out west), and I have to tell you how much I missed my daily digests. Bread for the day, indeed -- somehow the slightest touch of a jmdler can set up trembling in my bones! After about a week, I finally got to a computer and stayed up from about midnight to 3 a.m. catching up on all the posts. I was tired but I couldn't stop. Is there a support group for people addicted to the jmdl? Or is this it? LOL.... I often found myself saying: "Well, a friend of mine on the jmdl said this..." or "A friend of mine on the jmdl said that...." or "Smurf from the jmdl wrote..." or "Kate Bennett from the jmdl told me about this great website..." or "Catherine from Toronto...." or "Lori in DC....." I think my family kinda wondered what the hell I was talking about, but that's o.k. They take me as I am. My mom was worried that I would be harmed in Utah (Bush country) with my peace buttons and Kerry stickers. Luckily, no harm befell me. And I actually saw TWO Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers! I brought my brother to see F 9/11 (in all the 100s of theaters in Salt Lake City, it was playing at only ONE) and felt like I was in a comfort zone with the 30 or so other theater-goers. Surprisingly, though, I cried even HARDER this (my second) time with Lila Lipscomb. "Keep on livin' in the free world" has been playing in my head ever since. Pardon my rambling...I'm porous with travel fever! Let me leave you with a great site someone sent me. It is shocking, and it also had some great links (especially for YOU, KB!). http://costofwar.com/index-public-education.html Thank you all for enriching my life as you have -- for teaching me new things about Joni and music in general, and for your kind words, on and off list. Rhino Records is the ReIssue arm of WEA International. whether it's Warner, Reprise, Elektra/Asylum, Nonesuch or Atlantic Records; it's all WEA. a growing number of catalog ReIssues and anthologies are now being released on the Rhino label. it all the same thing, really. it's as simple as that. Yes, Joni Always has input. ALWAYS! in fact, contractually speaking, she has final Approval. that's why there was no U.S. anthology until Joni approved the release of the HITS compilation. the simultaneous release of MISSES was her request and 'condition' for approval of HITS. the recent Geffen Release, TBOS, was entirely Self-Initiated by Joni. Rhino asked Joel Bernstein for a suggested TrackList last March. the original list contained at least -1- song from each album and was presented chronologically. THEN Joni got involved ... > Isn't all of this material still out there on cds that are still > being produced and marketed by Reprise, Asylum and Geffen? However, in a lot of cases the copyrights has lapsed and the recordings are now in the 'Public Domain'. most of the compilations you're seeing are European and their copyright laws are somewhat different. not all of these companies are "Fly By Night". some are actually doing 1st rate work. especially, for instance, JSP Records in the UK and Media 7/Masters Of Jazz in France. both of these companies often use the sevices of noted ReMastering engineer John R.T. Davies. HIS work often surpasses the ReIssues released by the major labels. as for Joni's recent and forthcoming CDs: TBOS has three songs from Reprise/WEA. DREAMLAND has three songs from Geffen. in terms of 'Licensing Rights', it's a wash. even-up. > How did 'The Beginning of Survival' get done? > That contains stuff from both the Geffen and Reprise > recordings, does it not? i think that's answered above. andmoreagain, - ------------------ simon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 13:39:10 -0400 From: dsk Subject: Re: Joni fans discussing Marianne Rizzo wrote: > > *I just read this post by Debra and found it to be thought provoking and > insightful. . . > I liked it very much. Thanks, Marianne. It's always good to get some feedback. Since my "this release is bizarre" post, I've listened to Joni's radio interview about it, and it was great hearing her enthusiasm for this project. It didn't make me want to rush out and buy it, but hearing her say she hasn't written since 1997 (and WHY is that? I wondered) softened my view a bit. For someone who used to have songs pour out of her, such a dry spell would be tough (or so I imagine). The new compilations she's working on... are they and BS just keeping her hand in the best way she can? Kinda funny that she's keeping her hand in the MUSIC business considering she's been complaining about it for so long. Maybe this is better. She already did the hard work when she first wrote and released those songs, so she doesn't have as much emotion invested in these releases. It's all gravy. The "Dreamland" compilation is one I would give to people who dropped off after her first few albums, just to show them how she continued on, and maybe one of the songs would grab them enough to investigate further. As far as the song selection goes... "Furry" is one surprise choice but it does show Joni's unique way with words and images and humor. The choice that surprises me most is "The Jungle Line." Even a lot of die-hard fans dislike that one. I remember a fierce list discussion about Jungle Line a couple years back. So, once again, our Joni is full of surprises. Not married to her always using it like that on album covers..but in general I'm ok with the funky frames. A little LOTC/hippy mama-ish, which pleases me. The news got all the way to Argentina??!! To somewhat answer your questions, Wally, McGreevey [the Governor of New Jersey] calls himself gay. In his speech he talked about wanting so much to be part of a traditional family that he chose to marry women even though he's battled with feelings and confusion ever since he was very young. He was finally facing up to the reality that he's not truly interested in having sex with women. It looked to me like it was a relief for him to be, finally, saying that he is a "gay american". My first thought when I heard was, why is he resigning just because he's gay? But then it turns out that he wanted to break the news before his ex-lover did in a sexual harassment lawsuit, soon to be filed. The scandal part is that McGreevey's ex-lover is someone he met on a trip to Israel, and McGreevey hired him to be the counter-terrorism chief for New Jersey even though he was not qualified and could not get a security clearance for such a high-level job. The guy did, though, get a very big salary from New Jersey until he was fired from that job. Then, McGreevey put him into another high-level, highly paid state job. So that's the scandal part. It was an incredibly stupid move to put the guy into the counter-terrorism job when everyone is so uptight about homeland security, especially here in the New Jersey/New York City area. If it had only been that McGreevey was gay, or that he had an affair while married, maybe he wouldn't have resigned. People who live in New Jersey and who see the papers and tv there might have additional info about it. > and isn't it sad about julia childs? i'm thinking eclairs, i'm thinking coq > au vin. Like the old Sonicnet radio that went by the wayside a couple of years ago (after I'd spent many hours customizing it), LAUNCH allows you to tailor a "radio station" to your tastes. (In fact, it looks a lot like Sonicnet; maybe Yahoo bought that service.) There are a bunch of preset categories with artist names that you can select, and there's also a place to add 4 artists of your choice. I added Joni, Jonathan, Shawn, and Suzanne (Vega), and so far I've heard a live cut of "Diamond In The Rough," plus some great jazz (Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny). Do you have death on the brain? LOL! This is a very ODD painting... but I like it. It reminds me of something - an icon, or something. Maybe a Madonna? And I think one of her hands DOES look a bit strange - the one that's down (that would be her right hand). I'm not an artist but I understand hands are one of the hardest things to draw. I wonder if Joni is trying to tell us something? Those do look like flames. Is she in purgatory? Is she coming out of hell? Is she a phoenix rising from the ashes? The feeling I get from this painting is very hopeful. There's a lot of bright colour and a lot of gold tones. The expression on her face seems slightly stunned but somehow beatific. The slight smile is almost Mona Lisa-ish/ The painting is a bit primitive-looking, though. Sort of reminds me of a Madonna, like maybe the Virgin of Guadeloupe or something along those lines. Any art historians here?
