I'd been tempted to write to the JMDL about looking at the act of compiling TBOS as an artistic statement in itself, released at a do-or-die moment in deciding the direction the U.S. takes in the next four years, and he saved me the trouble with far more eloquence than I would have been able to muster. I pulled out my CD's and made myself a copy of TBOS this morning. I've just heard it, and I can concur with Jeff that the album flows beautifully. If you give yourself over to it, it's quite powerful. "The Reoccurring Dream" draws you right into the work, with its snippets of advertisements that grab out at you from the sound collage. The sequencing of the chosen songs, thereafter, is impeccable, as is the choice of songs. I come from a free-form radio background, and I loved assembling my own thematic works on a nightly basis - from a library of previously released works. I'm deeply attuned to what I consider to be the art of thematic musical juxtapositioning. That's what Joni's involved herself in here, and, on those terms, I think she's kicked some major butt. Joni still wants to be a part of the marketplace - of the music industry - no matter what she says about the evil record companies. My intuition tells me that that line is a smokescreen (not that she's not right in what she says) for what is in actuality a sharp decline in performing ability. As much as I consider Travelogue a remarkable success on its own terms, as well, you can tell it was a struggle for Joni vocally. Whether there are post-polio problems affecting her playing abilities, I couldn't say. I applaud her for staying in the game, in this way, until her strength and stamina return, if they do. TBOS (without having actually bought a copy - after all, Joni, I already bought these tracks once!) just might end up being my Joni of choice for the time being. So this way I've got them now - close together like you said, is that basically what they do with studio monitors in a recording booth? Same idea? or? So thanks Randy, I really appreciate it. The sound still isn't perfect...or even real good... but its good enough to be enjoyable this way. The best sounding CD I listened to last night "Heart Like a Wheel" by Linda, and the worst, for some reason, was a Jimmy Lafave CD. Anyway, the Ronstadt sounded REAL good. And then played some vinyl and an old Mimi and Richard Farina album on Vangaurd from waaaaayyyyyy back..sounded REAL good too. Nice sound. Hi Lama, first of all thanks for the input on this. Umm the DVD player is out in the living room with the TV so it unfortunately has to stay there. In my household, shamefully, the music room is relagated to 2nd class citizen status. But! I have a Playstation 2 that plays DVDS which is NOT being used..so, hmmmmm, I think I'm gonna look into hooking that up, to see. Not sure if it has jacks adaptable to my stereo. I've been playing CD's from my old iMac. Maybe its not the nest player, huh? So I will try the DVD thing, and maybe either use that or buy a Panasonic portable like you mentioned. Great tip! thanks for that! Or, might go ahead and pop for a Philips CD player/recorder. I had gotten some good info on that from SC Bob, but never went ahead and did anything. As far as condition of my woofers, well I actually had them reconed a few years back. Maybe not a good idea, huh? What about the idea of buying brand new 10 inch woofers and putting them in these cabinets? Like not reconed, but completely "new" ones. Like maybe some Cerwin Vegas? yes? no? maybe? (i say Cerwin Vega, cuz I have it in my head they are a good rock and roll speaker) Thanks again, for your ideas and the info. :) Em____ !!!! > > If not, take the grill cloth off the front of one speaker (if it pops > > off. Stereo imaging, phase, etc is always better there. As far as hanging them from the ceiling, experimentation is good. I think wherever you put them, you would want to avoid facing them directly at the opposing wall, so the sound gets diffused a bit and doesn't bounce right back. A big mix room in a pro studio usually has near-field monitors in addition to bigger ones, and of course a well tuned and tweaked acoustical environment. They tend to avoid rectangular spaces in favor of splayed ceilings and such. Another thing that occured to me is that a car environment has lots of ambient road noise, especially low frequency rumble. I tend to crank it loud. Sometimes when I get back into my car from the store, I'm shocked to find that the volume is in the near-pain-threshold area. Bad for the ears, but loudness does get you closer to the music, and accentuates the highs and lows. If you play your car stereo loud, too, try cranking up your home system and I'll bet it will sound better, subjectively. Lama's advice is worth checking out, too-if you can look at your speakers. Another Panasonic fan here, too-most of their stuff, including vcrs etc is usually a cut above the rest. And Polk speakers tend to be good, too. As Jimmy says, trust your ears. NJC Thanks for backing me up on this topic, Ron. The Panasonic brand portable CD player also does low bass (extension) pretty well. You can eaily hear them moving around on the fretboard of the bass (pitch definition). On most cheap CD players all of the bass sounds like one note and it's fuzzy. The Panasonic brand portable does the loud/soft attack (dynamics) better than it has any right to. That means that a well recorded piano isn't pinched like it's coming through a phone line. It's not good enough to separate the electric bass from a kick drum but until I can spend 12 times more money, this will do just fine. The percussion on the remastered "Sketches Of Spain" is very natural sounding compared to the spitty, gritty, hash-like noise from Sony portables and $130 Sony CD players I've had until now. On the Sony, the tambourine sounds like broken glass in a box or a mis-tuned FM radio's hiss. I thought maybe the Panasonic portable wouldn't last long because it's a portable, but I've been using it every day for more than 2 years. The Panasonic brand portable is an incredible bargain. I wish the styling wasn't so goofy but that's my only gripe. And here's the story behind the term blue moon: Blue moon promises more than just folklore 7-31-04 By Brian Baskin Special to the News & Record Legend has it tonight's blue moon will make dogs howl, cause pregnant women to give birth to baby boys and allow others an excuse to indulge in bizarre behavior. Grace Williams, a psychic who has read palms in Greensboro for 30 years, stands by the first two bits of folklore. And while moon rays or mystic lunar energy might not be to blame, plenty of people working Saturday night during July's second full, or "blue," moon could see activity a little out of the ordinary. Hospital emergency rooms tend to get more patients during a full moon, said Dr. Norman Mayer, chief of emergency services at Moses Cone Hospital. But it's mostly because the moonlit night encourages people to go to the hospital instead of waiting for daylight, he said. "You wouldn't think that someone would come and see you at four o'clock in the morning because they stubbed their toe two days ago," Mayer said. "But this is what you see." Such irrational behavior is mostly limited to humans. If dogs are howling at the full moon, as Williams claims, they aren't doing it at Guilford County Animal Shelter, said director Marilyn Green. Full moons come every 29.5 days. About every two-and-a-half years, two full moons fall in the same month -- July 2 and July 31 this year, with the second moon earning the nickname "blue." After tonight, the next blue moon will rise on June 30, 2007. That definition is barely 60 years old, based on an astronomer's mistake and the game Trivial Pursuit. The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first usage of "blue moon" to 1528. But until 70 years ago, phrases like "once in a blue moon" referred only to the rare occasions when a forest fire or volcanic eruption kicked enough ash into the atmosphere to give the moon a bluish tint. In the 1930s, the "Maine Farmers' Almanac" began defining the blue moon as the third full moon in the rare season with four total full moons. The logic behind the "Maine rule" -- based on correcting the lunar-based Christian ecclesiastical calendar in years with 13 moons instead of the usual 12 -- was too complex for national appeal. But in 1946, a writer for Sky & Telescope magazine misinterpreted the Maine rule to mean two full moons in a month. That simpler -- but wrong -- definition gradually caught on, according to Roger Sinnott, a senior editor of Sky & Telescope. After Trivial Pursuit debuted in 1986 with a card featuring the magazine's mistaken explanation, the new blue moon took off, Sinnott said. "Now there's probably no turning back," he said. For those who choose to stick with more traditional interpretations of the full moon, Williams -- Mrs. Grace to her clients -- warns that as an omen, the moon can be a mixed bag. If someone stares at the full moon, the next person he or she looks at will be hit with bad luck, Williams said. As for wolves and dogs, they howl because they sense the bad energy in the air, she said. "It's the downright truth -- the wolf knows the meaning of a full moon, and it's not a good meaning," Williams said. But, fishermen will have better luck under a full moon. And couples find moonlight romantic, she said. Not that moonstruck lovers need a psychic to tell them that. - - - - "I was getting my makeup done, and it just hit me: I love Nick, but I need time alone. I called my psychic, and I asked her opinion. . . I went straight to the Kabbalah Center and got a new bracelet." --Paris Hilton ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 2004 21:06:34 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: bargains If anyone wants to pick up a copy of 'The Beginning of Survival' for a nice price, Circuit City has it for $11.99.
