Ummmm,,, I said *art* , babe ; ) Seriously, the Britney phenom is more about an image being sold to the little blighters. But hey, if someone loves Brit's musiclike product, who are we to tell them they are wrong? I suspect that even very knowledgeable critics start with like or dislike, and then use their background knowledge to back up their opinions. Duke Ellington said "if you like it, it's good". I was just just looking for "strong and somewhat sincere" and he certainly passed that test. I wanted to be able to see him as a person, and thanks to his daughters and his shipmates I did that. I wanted to hear his agenda and I heard that too. I wanted him to tap into a little anger and he did that without losing control. Of course there was lots of political rhetoric and rah-rah, but that's OK. And he's still got work to do. I wanted to believe that I can vote FOR somebody in November, not just because they're not Bush. I feel like I can do that now. It scares me that his campaign manager is 0 for 6, though. I love that the remaining Reagans are dissing Bush. Now if we can get dead cowboy Ronnie to rise from his grave, point his ghoul hand at Dubya and tell him to go Cheney himself, well then we've got something. I was hoping that Kerry would appeal to undecideds and non-voters, I think he maybe did. It's possible he could even pick up some disenfranchised GOP's who realize they're backing a loser who's gonna have over 1000 dead American soldiers on his record by the time the convention cranks up, not to mention over 10 times as many Iraqis and other nationalities. I remain bothered when any group (and the Dems did it more than once) start that U-S-A, U-S-A chant. It shows me that we still haven't learned the most important lesson from 9-11. Did you ask the seller? No, I assumed it was some kind of typo or something - ebay uses a service called Muse to allow a seller to enter a UPC code and then it downloads all the information about the item. It's pretty cool, but I've noticed it's full of mistakes. Ghoul Hand Luke Muller! Good one, Smurf. KD's vocals have always been full of a clarity and richness to my ears, although I admit I have not purchased any of her stuff until now. While her take on ACOY is good (hard to mess that one up, really), her Jericho is a real standout. She ups the ante with the jazziness (probably not a word, sue me) of the song, and though I could have done without the strings she (and Ben Mink her collaborator) uses them sparingly. Of course, given that Jericho is one of my favorite Joni songs and is under-represented in the covers arena, I found it particularly delightful. Perhaps someday we'll get her studio version of "Help Me" that she did for the "A Case Of Joni" tribute all those many years ago. Wall to Wall is a series put on by NYC's Symphony Space. It's a free show, open to the public, featuring interpretations of a specific composer from performers from ALL genres and it lasts 12 hours! What was so impressive with the Wall to Wall Joni show (March 22, 2003) was that prior to this concert, there had been no one from the rock and roll era who was honored in this way. You can see more info about the show at: _http://www.symphonyspace.org/genres/eventPage.php?genreId=1&eventId=287_ (http://www.symphonyspace.org/genres/eventPage.php?genreId=1&eventId=287) And you can read my review of the 12-hour concert at: _http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=1077_ (http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=1077) (masochists only need apply) Bob, who still thinks about Helga Davis' performance and gets chills NP: Dead Kennedys, "Bleed For" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 2004 00:36:07 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Subject: Amelia Emily, Yes. This is like a Playboy Advisor letter, Em. About your stereo, I think the speaker stands were a good idea. Do you have a DVD player? If you play a CD on the DVD player (through the stereo) does the sound get better? If so- instant upgrade, free. If not, take the grill cloth off the front of one speaker (if it pops off. If it doesn't pop off, don't break it. I'm not responsible, blah, blah). Look at the outside rim of the woofer (the bigger one). Question: Is the outside rim of the woofer: a.) made of rubber which is in good shape, or b.) made of foam which has crumbled with age? If you answered b.) you should buy a bottle of tequila and plan a "special evening" at home. No, wait. That's advice for a different letter. Back to the speakers. If the woofers are shot, replace the speakers, don't replace the woofer. Speakers are much better at every price point than they were in the 20th century. Go buy something from Infinity, Paradigm, PSB, Polk, or JBL. (I'd probably skip over Bose & Klipsch.) You're a musican though so trust your ears. Take your own CDs to listen in the store for an hour or two. (Seriously.) Try both small scale and large scale music. Be sure to take something with really well recorded piano like Tori Amos. If the speakers are okay, it sounds like a boring CD player. If you have lots of money, get a Philips SACD 1000 ($1000 USD). If, like me, you don't have lots of money, get a Panasonic brand portable CD player (like a Walkman) and an AC adapter for $75 US at an appliance store. You'll probably have to go to Radio Shack to get the right cord that has a mini headphone jack on one end and RCA jacks for the Onkyo on the other. Let me know what you find out. All the best, Lama The brand names came out of the Stereophile Magazine list of recommended compoents. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 2004 07:55:46 +0200 From: "Ron" Subject: Re: stereo probs...need advise maybe?.. Let me know what you find out. i followed this advice when i went shopping with lama at jonifest last year. i thought at the time that i was making a mistake & should have bought the sony - but when i started listening it just didnt sound like your average portable. then when i got home & plugged it into my amp - well, i guess gobsmacked is the word. clear sound, great definition, & none of that horrible, harsh trebly sound i would normally associate with a cheap player. when i mentioned it to someone at work, he told me that panasonic are currently putting high end chips into their cheapy equipment, & it is making their product stand out. oh - & it plays mp3 discs as well !!! ron ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2004 #328 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
