I would rather tell her to sit at that goddamn piano again and paint me another FTR, man! Hell, sit down with Klein and Dolby again and paint me another DED, even, but just stop with the orchestras and the packages and the reissues. Gimme something new - she had the spark still on TTT with HIH, so c'mon, you can do it, baby! Hey, on a totally different note, does anyone know what the hell ever happened to Kate Bush? Is Joni trying to disappear like my Kate? Recently, I was in a bookstore and saw a new -- I think; it's new to me -- photography book by Annie Liebovitz, with the title "Musicians." There is a 2-page spread of Joni, seated at a table, cigarette in hand (natch!). This is definitely a different A. Liebovitz book from the one that has been commented upon before on this list. After checking a Web site about A.L., my best guess is that that was 1999's "Women." Whatever it was, there's a copy of it in the local public library, and within a few days, I should get a chance to refresh my memory about it. Light summer reading, you might say. To my great surprise, there was a Joni mention in this zine. A local music critic drew up a list of 10 pairings of summer music and drink suggestions. For example, Earth Wind & Fire with a tequila sunrise; Yma Sumac with a gin & tonic; Ibrahim Ferrer with an aged white rum, etc.. Well, number 8 on the list pairs Joni with a crisp white wine, such as chardonnay or sauvignon blanc! I'm always pleased and surprised to see that Joni continues to register on cultural radars here, considering that her music is quite peripheral to the contemporary pop scene. Sounds like a good article. I think "visually" Joni evokes "white wine" in a tall long stemmed glass..cuz I mean, thats her bod, right? A long tallllll drink of water, err, white wine. But to me, the music itself, what I know of it from HOSL on... is more like a smoky whiskey. Just a question, cuz this is interesting to me...did they recommend beer to drink while listening to anyone? btw, Yma Sumac, whatta TRIP!!!!!! lol!!!! :) Em - --- Michael O'Malley wrote: > I was flipping through a small zine called ``Tchin Tchin,`` published > by > our provincial liquor board, which offers ideas for summer > entertaining > and ettiquette. Hi, Beantown JMDLers! I have come into possession of some FREE tickets to Wednesday night's concert at UMass Boston with the Boston Pops, conducted by John Williams, and featuring a "special appearance" by James Taylor. The concert is being billed as a thank-you from the DNC to the city of Boston for hosting the convention. If you're interested in going, please email me offlist. I am lukewarm about it now but with the right crowd I could get excited. Here's my Joni content: Since this concert is on the night of July 28th, that means it will be happening the day after Joni's newest bimonthly Geffen CD release. So if any of us actually buys this thing, we can all check out the package. (I hate it when I'm the only one checking out packages.) Also, speaking of packages, since Boston is now a police state, be advised that men in uniform will be inspecting any really big ones. It makes perfectly good sense to me. Particularly the line: "I heard him cry through my window shade." This song used to creep me out a bit as I used to picture a man (although perhaps hungry and homeless) lurking outside Joni's window. But a cat.....well that just changes everything. My husband is big into metal music (what an unlikely pair we are, huh?) and I went mostly for the voyeurism aspect of it (I love a good story). Yes, I wish they'd film Joni's process of doing an album (I know they had something in the can and Joni nixed it ... ugh!) But it's very interesting even if you don't care much for their music (which I don't) but to see the way they interact (or don't) and the strange unexpected twists that take place, the ways they deal with the celebrity factor, the ways they try to write songs, the odd happenings that inspire songs, their relationships with their families, etc. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in music, the business and the process. Lindsay P.S. Was greatly relieved that the tatooed audience did not all get up and start singing and jamming with the music ... and I tried my best not to look too yuppie but I think it was hopeless. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 2004 16:04:58 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: Joni's cat?
