NJC I know Rufus has some dedicted followers on the list... He played five or six songs in HMV last evening, so i thought i'd pop along and soak it up. He opened with Beauty Mark. Can you believe that i disliked this song when i bought his first record all those years ago? The piano was way too loud and quite painful to listen to. I can't actually remember everything that he played, but he also did Dinner at Eight and Vibrate and a new song (to be on Want Two) called the art teacher, which he said was written about a straight male art teacher that he had a crush on. This man was telling rufus about some of the girls in his class liking him, so rufus wrote this song from the perspective of a young girl fancying the teacher, played it to him, and the message went over his head:-) It's available for download in america he said, but, since people can get anything on the net including child porn, he's sure we could find it if we looked. He made a few jokes about a madonna in-store appearence at HMV, and also the fact that he was tired and had just said he was performing at HIV on a live radio interview. There was a large crowd gathering an hour before rufus was due on stage, and by the time he came on half the store was full. If that doesn't motivate him to do more UK performances then i don't know what will. I wonder if he has more dates here lined up??? well, i know it's not the most thrilling review, but it may be interesting to someone. Ronstadt, who had been hired for a one-show engagement Saturday night at the Las Vegas Strip casino, dedicated a performance of "Desperado" to Moore and his controversial documentary, which criticizes President Bush and the U.S.-led war in Iraq. That dedication angered some Aladdin guests who spilled drinks, tore down posters and demanded their money back, said casino spokeswoman Sara Gorgon. "We had quite a scene at the box office," she said. About a quarter of the 4,500 people in the audience got up and left before the performance had finished, Gorgon said. Before her concert, Ronstadt had laughingly told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that she hoped that the casino performance would be her last. "I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back," she was quoted as telling the newspaper. A statement issued by the Aladdin said Ronstadt had been "escorted out of the hotel" just after her performance and said the performer would "not be welcomed back." "Ms. Ronstadt was hired to entertain the guests of the Aladdin, not to espouse political views," the casino said. Ronstadt was not immediately available for comment. ) Copyright 2004 Reuters. In answer to your question submitted to my Dr. Laura column in Gay Wins magazine, it is very simple. Let me draw from the intellegence of the prophet, Joni Mitchell: Lori, the seasons they went round and round, and the painted ponies went up and down. 46 times in all... You my dear are captive on the carousel of time. You can't return you can only look behind from where you came and go round and round and round in the circle game. She is really focussing on the new album, and it translates very well to the stage (as much as i loved Gung Ho some of it didn't take too well to live performance). One of the standout tracks on trampin' (have you heard this one Mike?) for me is Cash, and live it's a treat. They have been playing radio baghdad also, and it has been evolving according to reports on the patti lists. They seem to be really finding something in that one. Although i find it a bit tedious and an odd choice for concert performance, it was amazing to witness them jamming and improvising around the theme in Brixton. As a band, i believe they get better every time i see them (i've seen them six times in three years). I also have quite a few bootlegs, and they seem to be reaching new levels in terms of their abilities to play as a band (if you konw what i mean). Of course, there is also a good representation of her early work in hte current tour- in Brixton we got Free Money, Gloria, Pissing in a RIver, Break it Up, Space Monkey, 25th Floor, People Have the Power. I think Birdland has re-emerged lately as has We Three. I'm pretty excited about seeing her in Dublin! I'm sure she will put on a kick-ass show in Barcelona. She always seems to feed well off locations that are steeped in history and culture. And isn't she the only rock star (or whatever) you've ever heard advising the audience to drink plenty of water? lol Make sure you give us a full report of the show! Is Nero more vaule for money? What does ye all think? well - for music copying you cant beat exact audio copy (free!!!). unfortunately it doesnt have a cover design programme, & it can also be a little tricky to setup - has some techy bits, & also it uses an external mp3 encoder. i am fairly reliably informed tho that it is the most accurate music copying program available. for data files ive stuck to my old nero 5.5 which still works great. im too lazy to do covers so i cant help you with that :-) > I have not hooked it up to the net just yet, as i want to have good anti virus > software installed first. I was thinking of norton 2004. is this the best in > that price range? (i'm a student! so poor. and whoa is me etc etc etc:-) most of the better known programs (norton, f-protect, etc) are pretty much on a par when it comes to security, & generally the advice youll get will just reflect personal prefernces. (i use norton myself & have no problem recomending it). what you need to watch out for is the subscription catch - the price of the software normally only includes the first year of updates. you then have to buy an annual subscription - or - if youre a miserable bastard like me - reformat annually & start all over :-) (i would actually do this annually in any case as it keeps the performance of my pc up to scratch) > and what is a sound card? the sound from my computer is pretty bad, but this > could be crappy speakers or, i'm told, something to do with a sound card (or > lack of one), but i dont know what this is or how to check it. a sound card is a plug in to the motherboard which handles the sound processing. most of the new computers have sound built into the mother board, & cheaper sound cards seem to be vanishing from the market - leaving mostly high end units with all sorts of capabilities. i would however recomend getting a cheaper one, & installing it. i found a marked improvement in sound quality, and a huge improvement in overall computer performance when i did so. speakers are also a good idea - usually the ones bundled with a pc are only good for paperweights. if you want to buy dedicated pc speakers, go for a recognised brand - preferably one which is active in normal audio equipment. i have a set of harmon kardons ( 2 satellites & a subwoofer) which are pretty good. another option is to get a mini hifi type setup which has an extra input. you can then plug it into the headphone jack on the soundcard & get pretty good sound, (and also taping facilities, & portability - depending on what mini hifi system you go for). before i was given the harmon kardons i did this for may years & it was great. also - if you have a mini hifi you can connect it into the computer & use it to copy from cassette, (or mini disc or whatever depending on the system) onto your computer & burn to cd. ron ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 2004 16:42:11 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Joni and k.d. She has asked me to say grace before the supper meal. I will, of course. But I am not a grace-sayer, and don't believe a fatherly male deity is the supreme creator to whom gratitude is owed and of whom blessings may be asked. Aunt Jean is not a church-goer herself, and though her sister, my Grandma, attends the Lutheran Church in Margo every Sunday and has done so all her life, the rest of the family does not go regularly although I guess they all call themselves Christian. I do believe there is a Great Spirit, but I don't want to make an issue of it before the crowd by reciting a Gaian prayer or or Wiccan blessing or anything like that, which would be too off-the-wall for the majority of people who will be there. What I'd like is something that feels genuine for me to say because I wouldn't feel full of shit when I said it, but which everyone else there can relate to -- that we appreciate the good food, the party, and all our good fortune, thank you very much Aunt Jean and the powers that be. Anyone have any ideas? I know there are websites where you can get ideas for toasts to the bride and that kind of thing; I'll search "saying grace" and see what I find. And Bob, I'm well to the south of you on this side of the equator! -----Original Message----- From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com [mailto:SCJoniGuy@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 2004 8:49 PM To: rflynn@frontiernet.net; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: Good for a laugh, now proper DJRD etiquette **Which leads me to ask my trivial question--that is a trivia question for which I don't know the answer: Which record goes in which inner sleeve of DJRD? Insert sides 1 & 4 in ??? Insert sides 2 & 3 in ???** Easy - The record with sides 1-4 goes in the first open space; in other words, if you open the gatefold LP so that you're looking at the inside, sides 1-4 will be inserted on your left and sides 2-3 on your right. Oh, now I get your question...I'll ask the judge to strike my comments from the record. (Pardon the pun) It's been so long since I had that LP I had forgotten all about the innersleeves. But I can tell you she didn't have any haunted ghoul hands in any of those pics! Just keep on eye on ebay, and when a sealed DJRD comes up, buy it and see which record is in which sleeve. Presto! Complex problem, simple solution. Or better yet, ask Deb Messling. I'll bet she meticulously always placed the same LP in the same sleeve; after all, she remembers the date she BOUGHT the thing! That's the joy of buying new music, I feel a lot younger when I listen to this new (kickass) Cure record and realize that I bought it just 8 days ago. You don't remember your past lives? Are you have a -- ahem - -- memory problem? I know that in my last life, in the first half of the 20th century, I was a hooker who died. Before that, in Victorian times, I was a trollop who died. And in the life previous to that, like around the time of the Civil War, I was a common camp follower who died. So what have I learned? D'OH, as Homer would say: all I had to do was read the word balloons and connect them to the songs! I'm glad I figured it out myself before someone pointed out my own stupidity to me! Record 1: Side one: Cotton Avenue Talk to Me Jericho AND Side four (yes, sides one and four go together you young whippersnappers!): Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Off Night Backstreet The Silky Veils of Ardor Goes in the sweeve in which Joni's word bawwoon weads: "In My Dweems We Fwy" [cf. end of "Silky Veils"] Side 2: Paprika Plains AND Side 3: Otis and Marlena The Tenth World Dreamland Goes in the sleeve in which blackface, platform shoes Joni says (in the balloon): "Mooslems, Mooslems! Heh, Heh, Heh" and Joni in pretty sheer long dress & sandals replies: "Baila Mi Rumba" You'll be happy to know, Bob, that mine were in the wrong inner sleeves, though the records WERE put into the carboard thingy--oh yeah, the jacket in the norhtern rather than southern hemisphere order! - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of SCJoniGuy@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 2004 9:13 PM To: rflynn@frontiernet.net; joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: Good for a laugh, now proper DJRD etiquette **they have different photos of Joni in various (dis)guises and word balloons. Silly Bob! I'd be curious to see the portrait in larger size. It's hard to tell if the colour is really meant to be on the green side or if it just doesn't translate very well to the computer screen. What strikes me as kind of weird is how closely the picture is cropped (and inside a frame that seems a bit overwhelming, IMO) I'm always bothered by pictures, especially portraits, that are square. (You're so square, baby, I DO care!) I hate to gripe, because everyone's a critic, I suck at art, and I know nothing about design in any case, but somehow, I think if the portrait had gone on the cover without the frame, the general look might have been better. Just my deux cennes. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 2004 22:39:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Good for a laugh - --- KindTaper@aol.com wrote: > Here's an interesting item on ebay.
