How will Florida turn out? I wonder.< It is SO the time for everyone concerned to actively be involved to be sure we do have our votes count & it doesn't have to take much time to do so... the voting machines MUST have a paper trail & bush must be stopped from postponing our elections (can you believe we are even hearing about this?) There has been much behind the scenes work going on in each of the states to make sure our votes to count in this election by using machines with a paper trail... it's a huge issue & here is some of the latest info... http://www.truemajority.org/news/computeratemyvote.cfm >What our coalition representing over 3 million Americans asked for is simple: when we go to the polls on November 2, we want to make sure that our votes count. We asked our election officials to offer paper ballots so voters can know that the ballot we cast is verified by the voter who cast it, not a piece of software. We want elections decided by citizens, not computer errors. TrueMajority has been organizing on this election protection issue for seven months now and we're making a difference. Eight states have chosen to ensure that voters will see their choices on paper, double the number when we began. Tuesday's action was one big step toward furthering those numbers.< THEN there is this little piece of info sent me by my congresswoman: "In response to recent disclosures that the Administration is actively discussing postponing election day in the case of a terrorist attack, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer issued the following statement. STATEMENT BY U.S. SENATOR BARBARA BOXER To even consider postponing our elections, the most ardent symbol of American democracy, because of threats made by terrorists would be nothing short of allowing fear to rule our country. America is too great and too strong and too brave for that. If this Administration is so concerned about the possibility of terrorist attacks disrupting U.S. elections, the priority should be how to best defend against those attacks, not how to close polling places." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 2004 13:05:49 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Corrine Brown rocks congress, njc **bush must be stopped from postponing our elections (can you believe we are even hearing about this?) Kate, (I'm asking this rhetorically of course) why in the world would you be surprised by ANY deception or trickery that these guys would try? What's funny is that in this whole debacle, the only trump card they play is that "the world is safer with Saddam out of the picture", yet they're admitting that the world they've created with their unjustified attack and subsequent invasion means possible delaying of our own elections (don't worry, they have about as much of a chance making this happen as they did getting their petty & silly anti-gay marriage amendment passed), heavy security for the upcoming conventions, the Olympics, you name it. So as always, they say one thing while acting a totally different way. Meanwhile the numbers: - - Over 10,000 Iraqis dead - - 885 US soldiers dead (747 since the infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech, over 20 Americans dead since the June 28 'sovereignty' turnover) - - Over 5,000 soldiers injured & disabled It's a national tragedy, even more so when you consider the number of Americans who insist we 'stay the course' this November. And one of the biggest tragedies is the TOTAL failure of the Christian community to express outrage about what's going on. I think that's what nags me the most. I had some email trouble this past week so I'm not sure if I sent it. Apologies if I'm repeating myself. Jim PS, I apologize if I'm repeating myself. :) - ---- Yesterday I heard some radio reports about the middle class in Iraq. The first one was about a teenager. Her father works in another country and sends money back home which makes her family vulnerable to thieves and kidnappers. Before the war, she had complete freedom of movement because Saddam Hussein's rule kept gangs down (among other things!). Now, she can't hang out with friends because it is unsafe to leave the house without an escort. Next, an Iraqi doctor talked about his family paying a ransom for his safe return. He said that about 20 of his colleagues have also been kidnapped. Enter Nellie McKay (pronounced "mick-KAI"). She's a smart alec. Here's a song which contrasts Life During Wartime with life among people who pay for the war. In the refrain, she quotes from a scene at the end of the movie "The Wizard Of Oz". You'll recall the lion, scarecrow, and tin man are looking over a ridge at the palace of the Wicked Witch of the West. They are plotting to pick off the last 3 guards. As the guards marched, they chanted, >Oh we, oh. We ohhh, oh.> Today I dedicate Nellie's song to the middle class in Iraq... - --------- TOTO DIES - --------- When the dawn breaks through the drums start beating on the farm, your grimace widens and your lips part, sounding the alarm. When the bells explode, they scatter. Hitching a hand onto the breeze, the grand bureaucracy grows fatter. Whistling the old melodies: - ------ refrain ------ "Oh we, oh" goes the Buckingham jewel guard. "Oh we, oh" goes the kid in the school yard. "Oh we, oh" goes the cop on the beat. "Oh we, oh" goes the kid on the street. - --------------------- "Hey man, what's happenin' with you? I saw that episode too. Maybe I'll get some Chinese. I'll have the dumplings. No MSG, please." And when the night breaks through they wonder if all they lost was self respect. They pass the homes of greed and plunder, still lingering on _the disconnect_. - ------ refrain ------ "Oh we, oh", sitting down for the evening. "Oh we, oh", through the civil earthquake. "Oh we, oh", safe in bed they're dreaming. "Oh we, oh", heaven knows if they'll ever awake. - --------------------- "I'll have my coffee black. Hey look, we're bombing Iraq. I guess that's the only way. Oh, did I tell you we had Fifi spayed?" And when they get to work they hear drums. The boom fills all the empty space. They file papers, "La da di dum," then trim their shoe boxes with lace. - ------ refrain ------ "Oh we, oh", but there's somethin' a-growin'. "Oh we, oh", through the bustle and hiss. "Oh we, oh", feck the lawns that need mowin'. "Oh we, oh", but there's somethin' amiss. - --------------------- "Oh we, oh" "Oh we, oh" "Oh we, oh. We ohhhh."
