Next friday I'll take the long jump to the US (I live in Italy) to attend a scientific meeting in Orlando (FL). Looking at the Disney's website, I was astonished by the incredible number of attractions in the area, and, since I will have half day off, I am planning to visit one of those thematic parks. Can any of you who visited the place (or live nearby) give me a couple of hints on where to go and what to see (in such a short time)?? By the way, I would not be surprised if one JMDLer or two were going to attend the meeting (American Society of Plant Biologists, July 24-28). Thanks for your help. Of course, half a day in Orlando is not a lot of time, the last time I was there we spent a good half day at Sea World. It's not as crowded and cheesy as the other HUGE parks, and there are some really nice exhibits. Hope you have a productive and safe trip! That's a great story!! I also got to meet Joan briefly about 10 years ago after a concert in Austin. This was due to being acquainted with a woman named Debbie who managed, after hanging around backstage show after show after show, to become quite good friends with Joan. Every tour, Joan sends Debbie a special pass that allows her to attend every show on the tour and get backstage -- what a lucky gurl! Anyway, all this is to say that yes, Joan Armatrading is a shy and private person -- and tiny too! -- but she's also very gracious and patient, at least in my limited experience. Lori P.S. to Stephen -- YES by all means get more of Joan's albums, most definitely "Back to the Night." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 2004 10:41:34 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: Corrine Brown rocks congress, njc Thanks for that Patti.. . and those Joni lines are always an inspiration to me. . . Your post reminds me that it sure will be interesting in November to see how Florida turns out in the election. Hopefully, all those people who thought maybe their vote didn't count will be out there on election day. . (and those whose votes actually didn't count will be out again too). . I guess everyone's going to be out there making sure their vote counts in Florida (from both sides). How will Florida turn out? I wonder. Marianne >Date: Fri, 16 Jul 2004 15:37:31 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: NJC,Corrine Brown rocks Congress I saw a clip on the news this morning of Rep. Corrine Brown addressing Congress that I thought was GREAT. She passionately spoke (PASSIONATELY, ya know, as in: You've got to shake your fists at lightning now You've got to roar like forest fire You've got to spread your light like blazes All across the sky They're going to aim the hoses on you Show 'em you won't expire Not till you burn up every passion Not even when you die Come on now You've got to try If you're feeling contempt Well then you tell it If you're tired of the silent night Jesus well then you yell it): "I come from Florida, where you and others participated in what I call the United States coup d'etat. We need to make sure it doesn't happen again," Brown said. "Over and over again after the election when you stole the election, you came back here and said, 'Get over it.' No, we're not going to get over it. And we want verification from the world." I was whooping and cheering, yelling: "Right on, Sistah! You tell 'em!", until I heard the bad news. She was censured! :( You can see the whole story here: http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/16/florida.fight.ap/index.html I like this lady! Em in FL, is she your represenative? US/Canadian listers may not be aware that Joan was a major figure on the music scene in the UK from the mid 70s to early 80s. She had quite a few hits, a lot of very positive reviews and toured extensively and with great success. For me, her self-titled album from 1976 (which was her third) is a masterpiece; full of beautiful songs, her unique voice, so confiding and intimate, and all beautifully arranged and produced. Joan was also notable in being one of the very first UK women of West Indian origin to become a star here (I think her parents were from St Kitts), and one of the first pop stars to be a guest on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, which is a pretty good barometer of success.
