All I can say is that I'm certainly glad that Joni doesn't subscribe to the JMDL and I will say no more." It's now, I think, 32 years since Joni wrote 'For the Roses' and she writes about herself as critic and the band looks like 'confetti'on her tv set. (I love that line) and it goes on 'Oh the power and the glory Just when you're getting a taste for worship They start bringing out the hammers and the boards and the nails.' And, of course, that wonderful last line about the 'moon swept down black water like and empty spotlight.' Now she's 60, I can't imagine that Joni hasn't heard just about everything about her music from critics and fans alike. What makes me proud about being a member of this site is the mixture of dissection (every chord, every line), discussion (what did Joni mean by this or that), what the music means to me (what wonderful sharing from all kinds of people),a list of every Joni song covered (how do you do that Bob?). All this is tempered by the complaining that this line doesn't meet the standard, this was the worst song she ever wrote plus, of course, the lyric parodies (Cease Interfering With The Sadness - remember that?), the wonderful, intelligent humour that often greets me in the morning when I read my digest (Catherine take a bow). I remember the out and out love for members of the site in trouble and even the difficulties that sometimes causes - but most people stayed and struggled and disagreed and came through it. For me, JMDL is so very human which makes the comings and goings, the to-ing and fro-ing so very, very rich. I believe that Joni Mitchell would be moved to find so many people have been sufficiently engaged by her music to participate in such a myriad of complex ways as happens every day here. JMDL is an absolute tribute to her humanity. With love Anita (feeling warm and gushy towards everyone reading this :~) Following sending that I then posted what I forgot which was: *From:* steph@cix.co.uk (Anita Gabrielle Tedder) *To:* joni@smoe.org *CC:* mark.travis@gte.net, steph@cix.co.uk Oooppss - how could I forget in my list of great things that happen on this site, that people even bother to organise a whole FESTIVAL dedicated to your music? Mark, I got the joke too. It has occurred to me that maybe Joni *was* having a little fun when FTR came along. Maybe it was subconscious, but still: "You studied to portray me In ice and greens And old blue jeans And naked in the roses" OK, so there's no blue jeans, but there is a little blue and not a little, but a lot of green, in this album cover, an album named "For the roses" (so she IS naked in (For) the Roses". (Maybe the foreshadowing was foreshadowing by hindsight.) There are recurring (or reoccurring?) themes in Joni's words. The songs in "Hejira" are full of references to other songs, some deliberate, others probably not (maybe it's just me). In the song "Hejira": "As snow gathers like bolts of lace Waltzing on a ballroom girl" reminds me of the bride references in "Song for Sharon" "...when I went skating after Golden Reggie You know it was white lace I was chasing" There are other references in this song, but this one brings the cold and lace together. - ---- "Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger Can set up trembling in my bones" brings to mind "Down to you" (Court & Spark): "You brush against a stranger And you both apologize" - ---- "And then I looked at myself here Chicken scratching for my immortality" A chicken reference! (Bawk-bawk!) which comes back in "Talk to me" (DJRD): "Shut me up and talk to me I'm always talking Chicken squawking" - ---- In "Amelia", the words: "I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitudes" goes back to the song "Both sides now" from "Clouds". Which brings you back to" "In ice and greens and old blue jeans, and naked in ... the roses." - ---- And, of course: "I pulled into the Cactus Tree Motel" references "Cactus Tree" ("her heart is full and hollow") - ---- I know there a whole bunch more of these kinds of things, but a person could become obsessive about it and frankly, my dears, who has time to be obsessive? I prefer to let these images come to me, rather than go looking for them. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 06:47:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: Re: naked in For the Roses/now Hejira I just wanna know why she says "white ass deer" instead of "white tail deer"...I think its hilarious. I don't think it was from Les, but I also wouldn't assume it was a bug at his end either. These worm-thingies steal addresses from infected address books, but then they seem to change the name somewhat as well. It may be someone else on the list that's infected and the worm has stolen his address to make it look like it comes from Les. At least, that's what I figure - the e-mails just don't LOOK right. The whole thing is such a pain. I really wonder what the people who create these things get out of it - -obviously they have too much time on their hands. (Not directed at you specifically, Mia, but at people in general - it pays to keep one's virus definitions up to date.) I've rec'd a number of these at this account and most of the time they're automatically put into my spam folder. Every so often one goes through into the regular mail, but you can almost always tell they're spam because the addresses just don't look right somehow and they're usually not from people I've ever heard of (or they have part of a real person's name but the rest of the address looks fishy somehow). (In fact the next one in my inbox (from what I can see) looks like one that got through. <> ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 11:29:29 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Connie "Jes" Gallotti's masks of famous Canadians, including JM Cool sleuthing there catherine... does biological mean the artist took the impressions directly from the subject? The newly renovated Broadway Theatre stage will be called the Joni Mitchell Stage, in honour of Mitchell's musical accomplishments. Like the emerging artists who perform at the Broadway Theatre, Mitchell used to play next door at the Louis Riel Coffee House (now Calories) before she became an international star in the '70s. "She agreed immediately," said Marsha Day, of the Friends of the Broadway Theatre. Day spoke to Mitchell at the end of May when the former Saskatoon resident was in town visiting family. Day described Mitchell as "down to earth and easy to speak to." According to Day, the singer expressed interest in attending the unveiling ceremony in the fall. "She doesn't sing on-stage live anymore," said Day. "But she said she'd be happy to attend something in the theatre." The new stage underwent $1.4 million in renovations during the past 10 years, funded by the Saskatchewan government's Centenary Capital Fund. It is equipped with heating and electrical upgrades, a new roof and new dressing rooms. Recently, the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon donated money for new washrooms in the lower level lounge. And future plans include upgraded sound and cinema equipment along with a centralized ticketing system in the box office. "We want the Broadway Theatre to be the catalyst in helping our emerging talent in Saskatoon get their start," said Day. "That's why we're honouring Joni Mitchell, because she's an inspiration to everyone." In the past, Mitchell has been involved in many local projects, including work with the Mendel Art Gallery. In 2000 she had art displayed in the gallery for a blockbuster exhibit and this year she agreed to lend her name to its capital campaign as an honorary co-chair. Earlier this year, another group went public with its idea for a cultural centre bearing Mitchell's name on the Gathercole site, likely to house a performance theatre and a room of mementos and photographs about her musical history. In May, Mitchell told The Star Phoenix: "If the town would warrant that much Joni Mitchell, I don't know." She then added she was "honoured." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jul 2004 07:45:57 +0100 From: colin Subject: Re: John Kerry's '60s prep school band --The ELectras -- NJC Smurfycopy@aol.com wrote: >Colin writes: > ><< I do hope you are not catholic >> > >I was raised Catholic, Colin, but I met so many truly awful people in >positions of power there when I was a child that I ran screaming from the church >before I was even a teenager.
