What's ludicrous is that people think anyone has to supply them with the means for "freedom of speech." George (maybe naively) thought he was supplying fans with a place to meet and chat and connect. If that's not what was happening--and if he's footing the bill for the thing--then it's perfectly within his rights to take it down. All the talk recently about Joni doing the Geffen compilation feels similarly to me. We find ourselves in a culture of idol worship and we think our idols owe us something. Here's a fact: None of our favored artists owe us anything but the CDs (or concerts, t-shirts, etc.) that we purchase. That's it. I pay for a CD, that's the end of the transaction. It doesn't entitle me to direct contact with anyone, it doesn't entitle me to direct the artist's next choices. I know that goes against so much of popular thinking. "But it's the fans that make them stars! we're entitled . . ." No. It's not any one fan who makes anyone a star, and even if a group of fans start making demands . . .well, that's just ganging up on the artist. Sorry for a small rant. But this sort of thing just drives me nuts. Like the time, on another list, when an artist made an appearance and asked that a recording of a performance not be circulated because not all that music had been recorded (and apparently, if he didn't halt the ciruclation of it, he might lose first recording rights to it). People cried, "well, if he'd put out a new album, we wouldn't have to steal his work." Well, they didn't put it that way, but basically . . . It's fine to admire someone's body of work. It's fine to criticize it. (I have had my disappointments with Joni, too.) But to think that anyone owes us more than the CD we buy . . . that's just expecting too much for our 20 bucks (more or less). I mean, they're only people. - -Neil ===== Neil Ellis Orts 713-838-1787 Houston, TX keep up with my creative endeavors--join my newsletter list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/neonews ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2004 09:41 +0100 (BST) From: steph@cix.co.uk (Anita Gabrielle Tedder) Subject: Re: did Joni do like George Oooppss - how could I forget in my list of great things that happen on this site, that people even bother to organise a whole FESTIVAL dedicated to your music? They'll be in London next Tuesday 13th at The Borderline - >> In support of their sophomore release "The Whole Enchilada", the legendary members of Burrito Deluxe have announced European summer tour dates. Burrito Deluxe, featuring musical sage Garth Hudson of The Band and Flying Burrito Brother, pedal-steel innovator Sneaky Pete Kleinow, is a musical treat that has found it's own voice with their second release. On tour, the band will be performing classics from The Band and Flying Burrito Brothers, some well chosen covers, and new material from what is sure to be one of the most highly regarded albums of the year. Musicians' musician and pedal-steel guru Sneaky Pete Kleinow is rendering his California country sound, which has laid the foundation for present-day Americana and alt country steel sound. A founding member of The Flying Burrito Brothers, Sneaky's trademark sound has been heard on landmark records from Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell, and he counts albums by Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa and John Lennon as among the hundreds to which he has contributed. Living legend Garth Hudson is providing his immediately recognizable keyboards for the Burritos as well. Best known as the greatest virtuoso talent in the stellar cast of musicians that was The Band, Hudson has also recently graced the tracks of Norah Jones' latest release, and the Dixie Hummingbirds phenomenal 2003 breakout, Diamond Jubilation. Hudson was inducted along with former members of The Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Carlton Moody will provide the pure-as-spring-water vocals, as well as guitar and mandolin playing. Steeped in the mountain music tradition, Moody is the eldest son of fiddler Dwight Moody of Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys. Continuing this rich musical heritage, Moody formed The Moody Brothers with his two siblings, and garnered two Grammy nominations and three International Country Music awards. The indomitable rhythm section is made up of bassist Jeff "Stick" Davis of Amazing Rhythm Aces fame, and Rick Lonow, percussionist extrordanaire, who has recorded with everyone from Johnny Cash to Tommy Tutone. > July UK/Ireland tour dates @ http://www.burritodeluxe.com best to all PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jul 2004 06:26:13 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: "joni mitchell" victim of a road rage incident -- njc Wow, this is a riot! I agree they owe us nothing...but I also think we owe them nothing. If they put out good stuff, we can buy it - or reject it if we think it sucks. Just like they can make music if they feel like it - or set it aside for years at a time, if they aren't in the mood. So, maybe the artist has to lower their expectation too. Life's too short to listen to bad, or boring music. Just my Friday morning .02. :) Em ===== - ------- "Don't try to build an aeroplane when you just need a kite." Oh, completely. Yes. In cases like Joni, I buy new stuff just based on the strength of her old stuff and even at her most disappointing, I've enjoyed something on the disc to reward its purchase. But I feel no compulsion to buy the new compilation because I already have all that music (although buying it for her comments is tempting, I admit). My list of artists that I buy discs from without hearing a single track is very small, but I do it. If I'm rewarding them for putting out bad stuff, well, I just count it a small reward. I assume Joni makes a bigger royalty than I do on the book I have out (now available: Hidden Gifts by Neil Ellis Orts, end of plug) but if anything I'm rewarding the record company for making new recordings available. And I think there's something to be said for that, too. I guess in short, I don't have any hard and fast rules. I feel free to buy what I want and ignore what I don't want. I feel free to discuss and critique what material is released. And I extend the freedom to the artists to do whatever they want to do next, whether I like it or not. - -Neil votes yes on freedom ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2004 23:07:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Neil Orts Subject: k.d. covering joni I know it's been mentioned that k.d. lang is covering "Case of You" and "Jericho" on her new album, but I don't know if it's been mentioned that snippets of these songs can be heard on nonesuch.com.
